Don’t feel bad, you aren’t the only one. I wasn’t poking fun at you just letting you know you aren’t crazy when you feel like you may have been led on. Having said that, you probably know not to judge based on one dog. If you keep high standards they don’t all make it. That goes with any breed. I truly feel those men are not purposefully telling you a lie, they just don’t know any different because they don’t understand. Most Kemmers will tree yard squirrels naturally, a high percentage of mine will when young. That’s most “breeders” standard to breed to. Those of us who hunt know that those dogs are still a long way from finishing into real big game catching dogs. You can’t convince them otherwise, they just don’t know any different because how can you know what traits a big game dog needs when you don’t catch big game with your dogs you are breeding.
I talked with another man a few months ago that bought a supposedly started squirrel dog from from one of these big game kemmer breeders and he’s had the dog for over a year and it has yet to tree a wild squirrel. Tree the crap out of a bird feeder squirrel but take it to the woods and he’s just a great companion. These “breeders” have just what you need, no matter what you are looking for!
