Help Dog pacing..........???

Question..... how to put weight on a dog that has pacing issue? I'm feeding him enough and beef fat and beef scraps from the butcher..... I just can't seem to put any weight on him..... seems healthy besides looks like a walking skeleton.... Is there any way to slow the pacing?

Hunt the dog, take it for a walk everyday or run it on the tread mill. I have had many pacer's. If they are getting the exercise or stimulation they need they will stop pacing for the most part. Some just want the attention an a short walk with you will do just fine. Others need to hunt and hunt hard. These are the ones that will start pacing about an hour before dark and go all nite. I had one that I had to pin him up in his dog house during a blizzard. His hunt drive was just that strong.

Have it's thyroid checked for hyperthyroidism (overactive).....
No amount of exercise or feed will cure it.

I recently had to put down a 13 yr. old Grand nite ch. He paced the pen alot his entire life but he kept himself in top condition, Iam 72 with health problems so the last few years didnt hunt like my younger days. But what Iam saying is maybe some pacing is OK as he was always museled up and looked in good hunting shape.

Hunting shape would be fine...... but this is excessive.... he looks like a walking skeleton..... and I know hes getting enough feed.... 26/18 diamond and butcher scraps.... and I cant put weight on him...... and hes not being hunted..... I've got 6 other hounds here and all look good..... I've been at this 30 years it's not the dog feed or my feeding program..... is there a way to stop him from pacing..... thanks to everyone who replied so far.

You might try putting some hobbles on it with a much shorter tie out chain .

"and he's not being hunted" could be your answer.

Coonhounds have energy that has to be exerted one way or another. That being said if he's that thin he could have another underlying health issue most likely some sort of a parasite. Take him to the vet and have him checked out.

It means he's probably anemic from parasites (wormy).

I use a chewable called triple wormer ($47.00 for 12)for my hounds. Get with a vet if you can't find it they have something else that works the same I just can't remember what it is called.

This is what I use. Ordering from Chewy is alot cheaper than at the farm stores. Repeat dose in 21 days to break the life cycle. I do this about every 4 mo for our dogs.
Some parasitic infections can cause abdominal discomfort and in rarer instances neurological issues in dogs.
Put him on a flea and tick pill regime too. This will prevent further issues if it is tapeworms.

If your dog is pacing excessively, it is important to first identify the underlying cause of this behavior, as it may indicate an underlying medical or behavioral issue that needs to be addressed. In terms of putting weight on your dog, it is important to work closely with your veterinarian to develop a comprehensive feeding plan tailored to your dog's specific nutritional needs. This may involve feeding a high-quality, calorie-dense diet that is balanced in terms of protein, fat, and carbohydrates. It may also be helpful to feed smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day, rather than one or two larger meals.

I will put in my two cents. I had a dog that would pace back and forth all day, the only time she would stand still is when I cut her loose to go hunting at night. She was properly wormed and given heart worm medication monthly and the vet knew her by name. All I can say is it is something genetic, that you are not going to break it from. In my instance this dog was very shy and seemed nervous all the time, and I treated it like a teddy bear, never disciplined it more than it could handle and took time to pet and love on it more than others. Some dogs are easy keepers in the kennel and some are not. The ones that aren’t can get annoying quick.

I’ve seen a few hounds that were pen pacers. Most of them didn’t hunt out much when turned loose outside the pen. All were hard to keep weight on. I can honestly say I’ve never had a good hound in the woods that was a pen pacer.

The ones I like best are the ones that are laid back and quiet in the pen and hunt like their lives depend on it when turned loose to hunt.
