Barrels

My son has several coyote hounds and beagles, he started using barrels a couple years ago , he wraped the barrels with rolled insulation then wraped them in plastic then duct taped them very tightly when his dogs come out of there boxes they steam a little it must be pretty warm in there .

would work if you had room to put them outside the kennel and only allow access to door toget inside.

I actually took mine and built a wood frame box around them and used K9 swinging doors. Water sealed the wood last a long time

All the talk on barrels .Here's what I can tell you from past experience.
We got our red barrels locally from a packing place called Belleview back then for 7.00 for the 50 lb.They are more now.
The army used them for years for housing the dogs they were training. Don't know about now .
Some ordinances call for a structure with 6 sides to be called a proper housing.Good enough for the army but not civilians I guess. Easy fix .Build the 6 sides and enclose barrel inside... explain later

Yes you get condensation when you put a flap over end. But you will even with tight wood houses. I always leave a few inches of gap for air flow to help with that. You need air circulation to avoid.

For support .Cut four pieces of 2x4's at 45 angles. Put one on each corner and secure with multi screws.
Although I never did this and may be more time consuming to figure circle radius. Another suggestion would be use 2, 2x 6 or 2x8 cut radius to barrel ,connect with 2x4's to make a frame and attach the barrel on top of it.

Go a step further. Cut 4 more 2x4's and attach them to the top corners of the barrel ,Put a piece of plywood on top and secure.
This will provide shade on barrel in the summer from sun and everyone knows how dogs love to jump on top of their house to lay or to just look .And with enough over hang in front will help keep out elements.

My friend had a shed with kennels that he cut holes in and the barrels were on the inside.

The way to build around the barrel was this. They come with a lock ring and insert .If you buy one make sure the lock ring is on the lid.By the way the insert is a great feed pan for feeding litters of pups. Remove the insert and lock ring.Trace the top of the barrel lip on the front of the dog house plywood sheet. Cut hole through .Insert the barrel through the plywood .Attach ring of barrel back onto barrel.
It should now be secure to front.Cut your 2x4 pieces for what ever height you made your out side house so they help to stabilize the barrel and attach to barrel corners. Now attach the plywood sides building around the barrel.
Got your water proof house and the law got its 6 sided dog house.
