Trashy Pups

I live in the middle of big oak timber in NE Ok. I consistently have 2-3 pups running loose at my house running and treeing anything they want. This is the same program as Jennifer and Cheyenne as they made me a believer in the program. Now I raised a little female last summer that I walked to around the house that had squirrels, opossum, ran deer, heck even found a house cat. I loved every second of it. The last couple weeks my older female has been in heat and so iv hauled my puppy. Last night she struck some junk and ran it about .7 and ended up getting treed by herself with a coon split from the other dog. First one shes every treed solo and she is 8 months old tomorrow. My opinion is that trashy pups make for a betting hunting dog, they always find something to run and make it a game rather than stand around your feet. They have to want to go hunting before anything else can be worked on.

I have been lucky enough to own several naturally trash free or extremely easy to break dogs through the years. I have owned dogs that never trashed or wore a shock collar. I broke a couple simply by yelling at them one time. The last 2 I trained were broke using only level 3 on my Alpha.

Despite how naturally straight or easy to break, most of these dogs ran a track to catch.

I have hunted with plenty of extremely bad trash runners through out the years, and never seen one I thought I would like to own. I even had a buddy who started his dogs on deer until they were 18 months old. A dog's abilities are not dependent on how fast it can run off game. I believe intelligence, desire, drifting track style, and athletic ability all go hand in hand to achieve top track speed.

You're right Tar, but I have hunted Walkers in the past and have hunted with some top walkers throughout the years. I used to hunt with a friend who had a Gr Nite Ch Walker that I believe was as good as I ever stepped in the woods with of any breed. BUT, that dog was forever trashy! I don't even want to begin to tell you all the methods we used to break him. Here's the deal, He treed coon no quicker or better at 8 years old as he did at 2. The only thing different is, he was a broke dog at an older age, well as broke as he would ever get. Just because I now hunt Blue dogs doesn't exempt me from knowing what a good coon hound is, well maybe not, LOL! At any rate, I still would prefer a more trash free hound from the start that possesses hunt, tracking and winding ability that is looking to get treed quick and to stay. Not too much to ask for, IMO.

I have hunted with good blue dogs lol. I know I am not going to spell his name right but Russell carnahan had horse branch blue bawler out of tuhshudas Arkie he came up here and let me tell you he was a coondog !! could run like the wind Russell said he caught several deer when he was younger. He caught one coon on the ground and was running one so fast it went up a telephone pole. Don't pay no attention to my blue dog jokes I like all good hounds.

Ron/Tar

I have owned 2 different bluetick/ crossbreeds over the years that were second to no man's dog/s. Both dogs could fill the barn with hides and did. Hides were high in those days and the previous owner of one of those dogs done real good selling hides. I would love to own one as good as either of those two were. Dave

I honestly won’t even consider messing with a pup that doesn’t have the heart to run a deer through the country. Running junk teaches them to run tracks it also teaches them to get alone. Usually if they have brains you never have to shock them on deer. When they start getting coons thumped out to them they will quit in there own. The dog I hunt now has CAUGHT 2 deer and a coyote. I never had to shock him to break him and you can cut him through a herd of them. You can take whatever you want out of a dog if your a good enough dog man but I don’t care how good you are you can’t put Heart and Drive in one. If they don’t have the drive to run a deer to catch they will never operate at the level I want them to operate at.

He averages anywhere from 9 to 15 mph on the Garmin depending on the terrain and is absolute poison in a cast. If you have the patience and aren’t scared to walk your guts out and wear out a few pairs of boots the trashy running type dog will almost always make the best track dog. I’m not talking trail and grub up a track but take that bad track out of there like they are running junk and hang it right in everything else’s behind.

I've never seen an elite, top shelf dog that didn't run junk as a young dog. And there's some guys on here that would be surprised if they started going in and cutting tracks on their young dogs. I've never seen a naturally straight pup that can avg the same kind of speed that I'm looking for. I'm not saying they aren't out there but I'd say you'll have to show me.

Now I'm not saying a want a trash runner that can't or won't be broke. I want a pup/young dog with enough drive to start trashy. I want a young dog to be able to take that cold track away from the other dogs. Just like Jen and mafia 2 are talking about. I don't want to have to wait for a young to learn how to track game by the time I start hunting them. I want them to have drive enough to want to catch what ever the desired game to be.
