When to Seperate pups

I have 2 pups here that I was attempting to raise running loose, but unfortunately for me, at 8 weeks old they got picked up on the road and ended up at the neighbors this morning.......and they do me no good dead, so I have to kennel them.

Is it ok to kennel them together or should they be separated? They have been raised together, are used to just eating out of a feeder and they were the only 2 in the litter so there never was any competition issue with food.

Any opinions??

I see no problem in kenneling the pups together provided you are having no aggression issue. I am doing so myself right now. You may have some hunt-related issues later on if you hunt those pups together and I don't mean aggression. They may want to hunt too wide together and they may be too competitive about grabbing trees. If that happens you will need to seperate them in the kennel and when hunting, something you will want to do at some point anyway. It's much easier to train/start one pup at a time.

In my opinion, they should be kenneled separately. I have experienced pups that bond with each other rather than with me. Since dogs have a pack mentality, I believe it makes it more difficult to train them and get them to accept that you are the leader. Also, you are not there 24/7 and have no way of knowing if one is dominating the other. I don't necessarily believe that aggressive behaviour is a result of environment or that future behaviour can be predicted by how they act around a feed pan. I think each pup should have some time to develop its own personality and have its own space. At the same time, it is important that they interact with each and other dogs. That my .02. Good luck Ron!

I've read somewhere that by 11 weeks if left together pups will determine which ones will be dominate or submissive. Don't make it true but the article sounded reasonable enough

pups

separate them as soon as you start taking to woods!!! because if you keep them kenneled together! when you take one out the other will bark its head off!! as soon as you can do it!! do it. sure they will bark now when you separate them!! sooner the better!! and than you can work on that yard barking thing!!/kennel barking/ or what ever you want to call it!! its a pain in the rear to have one barking!!!lol
