Got to hunt Elmer, the male out of Critter and Sky, Sunday night. He has only been out 6 times in the last year and a half and was in the dog box for a couple of hours before we got to turn out. Turned him loose up a holler and he made a circle about 250 yards and checked back in, so I headed him back in there and told him to get going. He went straight up a big hill, circled around the ridge above the next holler and it looked like on the garmin he was working a track about 500 yards away so we got in the truck and drove down the road. When we stopped the garmin showed him treed so we listened and he was treed about 320 yards from there up on the ridge on the other side of the hill and also the holler that we turned him out in. I would say he had covered 800 or 900 yards of ground to get treed. Went to him and he had a coon that we saw in a den tree. Didn't get to hear him track but he sounded very solid on the tree and didn't act like he was going anywhere as it took us a little while to get to him up on the ridge where he was at. I'm not as young and quick as I used to be but he wasn't going anywhere. Elmer has the a very unique tree mouth that sounds like there are two dogs treeing instead of one. Never heard anything like his tree mouth before. He has one bark that is a deep chop and one that is a sharper chop that don't sound anything like each other and he can intermingle them while he is treeing. I'd say he has an average mouth but either of his barks on the tree carries good. He is a really big monkey faced dog that I would guess weighs around 90 pounds but is built pretty good for that size of a dag and he is medium colored. Justin Adkins of Wayne, WV will be his new owner along with a 2 year old male dog out of Elmer that is just started because the previous owner of him and Elmer wasn't able to hunt due to his job. The 2 year old, Brummy, is out of a female out of Brussel Sprouts Roast (marmack bred) and Egglestons Storm (if I am right on Storm) and she was Droop bred if I remember the papers correctly. The 2 year old is a really nice looking dog and I can tell already from just being around him that he will make something. They are both at my place now until Justin is able to come get them and then we will see how they can do in the mountains of West Virginia where the coon are thin and the hills are steep.
Sounds alright John!
I would say once the dog gets settled in he may operate even better. Some of them take a little time to adjust. The vast majority of those dogs I have been around are pressure tree dogs, so a person doesn't have to worry about hurrying into a tree.
I hope both hounds end up doing well for Justin! Thank you for keeping me updated!
Take care,
Vic
