Hunting Lesson #2 � 10 weeks old

Enter my wife�s pup: Charlie. He stole the show again!!

Charlie pulled so hard he broke the twine and then finishes the hunt. He has his dad's fire for sure.

We filmed the whole episode too. It�s about 10 minutes long and does a much better job of showing how each pup reacted to this exercise. It will be useful for critiquing later. From what I saw, there�s not a cull in the group at this point.

Come this weekend these pups will be romping through the woods again for a week and working drags, wading water, climbing over snags, you name it, they will do whatever is appropriate for their age. I have them completely accustomed to a rifle and can barely get the gun fired for all their excitement and jumping on me when I shoot. They will also have covered about 1,000 miles on the road by the end of this month. These pups will have no silly holes in them for lack of handling and training. Third puppy shots come this week and maybe I'll get them in for rabies shots too.

Dropped Frito twice last night. First run he got deep and treed about a mile away. Second drop he struck within a 100 feet from the Jeep and treed 200 feet deep. Whatever it takes to tree a coon fast and sure he does it: coon eyes both times. Wanted to hunt him some more but spent the rest of the night finding Sloopy. The old gal can bore a deep hole in the dark. She's getting a little old and needs more work to get her back in shape for these ridge runners. They will run if not given enough pressure.

The coons look good this year. Fat and good numbers. This one would be a beauty of a prime northern hide in a couple months.

I've had those close hunting dogs some people like, but now I really prefer a dog like Frito that when dropped in the woods alone is gone however far and long it takes to tree a coon. My country is big and coons are widely scattered and with those close hunting dogs I had to walk miles some nights to get the dog on a track. Some nights I couldn't walk far enough. Now I sit back and wait until he's treed, then drive down the road as close as I can and walk straight to the tree. Sometimes it is a long walk, but it's always a whole lot easier to walk to a tree than it is to walk a dog just to look for a track. It's also a whole lot less total walking in the long run. I now also see coon(s) virtually every night I hunt. I realize this doesn't work for everyone, but for me, I'll never go back.

Get gone, buddy. I'll meet you under a coon!

Rick thats the way them Ol Timers hunted. They walked with their dog which never hunted but a few hundred yards out and checked back in. I lke a dog to get gone and tree. Frito sounds like an AWESOME hound. One to be proud of and to treasure...

Frito got a first place win last weekend. Only his second UKC hunt of the year. Coons weren't moving much where we hunted and he got a first/first on the first drop and ended up treed on a long running track way too deep. We split the strike on the next cast and after another long chase, I heard him hit the coon in water just ahead of another dog in the chase. He picked up no minus points.

Last night I was walking on a dirt track in a hayfield with the dog working a track ahead of me. About that time some eyes appeared on the track headed right at me. shortly this coon comes running down the track and when he's within about 6 feet cuts to side and runs into the woods. A few seconds later Frito comes down the track at top speed and runs past the coon, makes a 75-foot swing around, still in high gear, missed it again, slow down dog!!, makes another swing, I get out of the way for fear he mistakes me for the coon, then he hit the track and drove it still on a dead run into the woods. A couple seconds later I heard him slam into the coon against the base of a tree and it is ALL OVER. Sure glad I'm not a coon with the hound from hell running in the woods.

I took the pups out for another walk in the woods early this morning. One pup found a track he liked along a little lake and another fell in behind him and then another. They trailed it along the shoreline a couple hundred feet and then into the woods a short distance, and came treed on a big old aspen. All of them jumping and rolling around and barking in a chaotic treeing frenzy. No coon of course and who knows what they were trailing for sure but whatever it was they thought it was in that tree. It looks like these pups are going to start all by themselves on coons, and I'm thinking I need to hold the little buggers back for a couple months. They are 15 weeks old.
