It's that time of year down here. I went out with my son hunting yesterday and we found almost 140. I got to have a good visit with him, something that as a mom you cherish especially now that he is grown with kids of his own.
Tonight fried mushrooms and maybe some stuffed with cream cheese, bacon and garlic then deep fried!
Anyone dry any or have any recommendations I have a dehydrator but don't want to waste them if it doesn't work.

I have tried several methods to preserve them and I'll tell you what works best for me. Blanch them in butter. Only cook them half way or less. You just want to stop the ripening process which freezing alone will not do. I then take them out of the butter and freeze them on a sheet of waxed paper on a cookie sheet. Chip them off when they are froze and transfer to a freezer bag. You almost can't tell the difference from fresh. A nice treat in October when you are in hunting camp!

We are still a couple weeks out but I think the season will be early this year. Good luck, hope you find a bunch.

...they are just starting in central ILL.i found these 3 days ago and found 14 this morning......I did get a inch of rain about an hour ago..temps are now up in the mid 60's and low 70's now so this weekend should be good...I store mine the same way Todd .but I vacuum seal mine after freezing......good luck all.....ive used the dehydrator..i didn't care for them that way..

I dried some in the oven, and put them in a sterilized canning jar, with air tight lid. This is the first time trying this method, but their supposed to keep for years this way. Lots of good video on YouTube.

You will still find them around the elms if you can find a place with any. There are so many oaks down here and in the hills stick to looking in draws when in the hills. I haven't been out since Sunday Dalton went out Wednesday and found 37 more in just a little while. We need some rain or they are gonna be about done.
