Breed standards

Our club hosted a youth hunt, and before hand I listened to a guy conduct the yep class. Now this guy has won bench shows at every level and also is a judge at some of the bigger shows bla bla bla. I'm not a show guy, so that didn't interest me. But after he went over what dogs could show, not show, and if they are fixed or have only 1 nut, he said the breed standards was for the show ring only. So........
