Stephens Stock information

Would like to find information on these little dogs. How many different lines are there? How hard of tree dogs are they? I understand they are colder nosed, open on track (as a general rule) but do they tend to hunt like a traditional cur or more of a straight line hunter? Not trying to buy one, just would love more information than just what is in the breed description on UKC. All dogs are different, but how do they tend to do as a combination dog? Out hunt their mouth? Would hate to have one that doesn't want to tree squirrels and only coons. I have a ten month old OMCBA dog from great breeding that's doing great. Just would like some information on the little black dogs. Why aren't there any in these competition hunts? They seem scarce. THANK YOU

They do have comp. hunts but it is a breed association. They can compete in any other open hunts, there just aren't that many of them (Stephens dogs) so that is why you don't see them.

Here is one of mine on her first and second.

Stephens

How do you like the Stephens compared to the Busher bred dogs you have?

Well if you research Stephens broke off originally from the OMCBA so they have similar traits to some of the Busher dogs if you get the right strain of Stephens dogs.

Just like OMCBA dogs there can be considerable difference in them by strain, some are smaller but there isn't a whole lot of that strain.

The biggest difference is basically most of the Stephens dogs will be semi to open at night where more than not of your OMCBA dogs will be silent. Even the majority of your Busher dogs will be silent at night. I prefer them open at night even though most of mine are silent.

This is the first Stephens dog I have had in close to 20 years, but to answer your question so far I like her. She will be open at night I am sure. Most people wouldn't like it but she will even open a little on a hot squirrel. She is smart, easily handled and has allot of energy. She hunts about like some of the higher energy Busher dogs I have had, but as far as other traits she is a little more wired up than most Busher dogs but she isn't a problem. She listens well and responds to all commands.

I got her from a fellow that originally bought her to squirrel hunt, he was a hound coon hunter but never got around to it. He never took her out, I have only had her three weeks. She has went from hanging around my feet to barking once on a tree and gone to treeing decent and hunting out 150-250 yds deep and staying to I can get to her. She is now tone broke and I can tone her in when I am ready to leave now. She has advanced decent I feel for the amount of time I have had her. I am just about to quit this squirrel hunting crap with her and get down to serious stuff like coon hunting. LOL
