Choosing a Pup

When your choosing a pup from a liter how do you go about choosing the pup you feel would be the best to take to the woods, what all do you look for in a pup? Myself when I choose one I look for size, color and good personality. Just wanting to see how everyone else goes about it.

I look at all of that. If I can, I let the pup pick me. When I let them out to play, I watch for the one that comes up to me first the most often and that's the one I take. I realize that it's kinda hard to do when picking out of someone else's liter.

I like the pup that holds back. While most jump up, wanting petted, the ones that stay back, observe... Needs to trust you. But I like dogs that want to please and a scolding is usually good enough. Has worked for me.

No kiddin lol!! If I don’t won’t it, grab it up. It’s almost guaranteed to make a dandy and bring at least 5 figures 👎😂.

I asked Chuck Schmersal awhile back how he always did so good at picking his pups. He said he looks for 3 things in particular . . . . . . Looks, looks and looks!

I decide to look based on bloodlines. There are just some lines I really like. When it comes to the actual pups I look at conformation and condition first. There isn't a whole lot to look at when they're 8 weeks old but you can see obvious problems like bent legs, runny eyes and dull coats. Then I look at the way they interact with people and the other pups. Look at how they hold themselves when something is going on - do they watch and then jump in to play (preferred), do they rush in with no hesitation to be first, do they hide off in a corner or do they simply pay no attention at all? Are they interested in people or do they seem oblivious to the person who cares for them? I've found the ones who pay little attention to people unless it's feeding time are the ones that take more work to convince them to come when you call them and to follow other verbal commands.

Take a coon with ya

The way people expect pups to start, better take a coon with ya. Pick your pup at 8 weeks which everyone can run and tree it and stay hooked for an hour, pick that one. If none of em do just keep puppy shopping. I bet you never a puppy you're not happy with.
