Hello
I have 2 young females one is around 11 months and the other one is a lil over a year old they've had a full gun season in this year and there doing awesome for there age this being said would it be ok to get them into trials..... Thanks for reading

I am fairly new to trialing but will be happy to help you get started. When I decided to get into trialing I went to several trials as an observer so I could see first hand how it worked. Did you order a rule book as was suggested in your previous post? You need to understand the rules and how they apply in the field. Order a subscription to American Beagler magazine. That magazine is a great help to us beginners! From American Beagler you will learn names of top Trialers and their dogs. There is an article in American Beagler written by Allen Gingerich called Full Circle. That article deals with rules and how they apply. Dave McVay writes a very good article in the magazine also. I owe Dave a "thank you" for making my first trial observation an enjoyable one. I called Dave last year and told him I was coming to the Nationals just to see how trialing works. He told me to look him up when I got there and he would make sure I got out on some good casts. He was extremely busy but stayed good to his word and put me with some experienced trialers. That allowed me to watch what was happening and ask a ton of questions. You will find most beaglers to be easy to talk to. We all love to talk about our dogs. You can trial a dog that young but I'd be careful. Not all young dogs can handle the pressure.

Young dogs like young people are easily lead into bad habits. You may run into some trash running dogs in trials and they may get your young dog started with some bad habits.

Ok I'll for sure keep that in mind if I don't like what I see with other dogs and don't like what there doing I'll yank my hounds out and head home ...thanks

Sent you a PM a while back. Very similar info to Chuck Kerns' post. Most trailers do not bring trash runners to a trial. I could count on one hand the number of off game chases that I have seen during a cast I was on. Also important to make sure your dogs don't run deer, cats,...
I am remodeling the Motel 6 in Findlay. Call me if you want to get together and run dogs.
There is a hunt in Holmesville this week-end.

Did you get to a hunt this past weekend? What format are you leaning toward ? Performance Pack or Hunting Beagle?

I would recommend Performance Pack rather than Hunting Beagle. First, you can run both in Performance pack, only one in Hunting Beagle. Second, there is a no hunting judge in Performance Beagle, not so in Hunting Beagle, you are judging also and I've been beat with the eraser on the pencil more than once in Hunting Beagle. Performance Beagle should require a cleaner hound, but not so much these days, may be better for young dogs.

Personally, I like Performance Pack better. You can run multiple hounds and it is more social, friendlier. Hunting Beagle is very cut throat in my opinion, at least that is my experience. When I travel to a trial, I want to enjoy the company of like minded folks, try Performance Pack first!
