Minnesota Lacking

Why does it seem, on dog sites anyways. The scarcity or lack of dogs & pups for sale in Mn. I'm talking hounds, varmint dogs, etc. Not duck & bird dogs. Odd state location, lack of game?? Any thoughts.... Thanks BW

I think there are simply fewer litters raised. Anyone that has raised many litters or tried to sell many youngs in mn knows that it is a real challenge to get fair market value.
Challenges of logistics in getting pups hauled out of state, trying to justify enrolling litters in performance programs when most pups that stay in the state will never see a nite hunt, and the fact that 90% of the coonhunters in the state aren't competition hunters and a good majority of them don't care about registration therefore don't want to pay even half of what the pup or dog is worth.
Just my thoughts.

The main reason is that nobody will buy them. Try to sell a well bred litter of pups in MN.

I understand the comp night hunt part of it, but high prices are nation wide. Gotta be lack of game. Can't run bears, coon are mainstay, some cats, some yotes. Bill W

Not sure I understand your comment about prices nationwide? Rarely does a young started hound in MN sell for some of the prices that appear to be the going rate in most other states.
A litter of well bred pups in MN also typically sells for less.
I don't think there is a lack of game, coonhunting in certain areas of MN are as good as anywhere else plus seasons on cats, coyotes, squirrel.... But we definitely lack the opportunity to hunt some of that game compared to WI.

Prices nationwide... Meaning the average price for a reg is 200-5,600 in all these ads over the country. I'm talking about the availability & amount in Mn. With out driving a thousand miles or paying a hauler.

Jay, how many of those pups and dogs do you sell in ND or MN. ? I raised a litter this year from Bone Collector and my Gr ch Nt. Ch and sold EXACTLY 1(one) pup in MN. I had to deliver 6 to Onley, IL to sell them. They were PKC SS Permanent UKC PP.

It's not just the hounds that don't sell well in MN, it's other breeds as well.

I know a couple of breeders in that state, & both of them have had trouble selling their good show puppies, or getting decent prices for any of their pups - pet or show.

One of them has almost stopped raising pups because they take so long to sell, & when they do sell, they go for about half of what pups in surrounding states are selling for.

That is exactly it. Everyone seems to go out of state to purchase pups & young dogs, and those that are interested in buying local usually aren't willing to pay asking price.

For years growing up I watched a few local hunters who always had to go out of state to purchase a young dog or breed their females when there were equally good options close to home. That probably hasn't changed.

I bought a Bone Collector pup off Bob Hennesseyfor $350. We showed him one cage coon & he barked at it. Then I turned 2 more cage coon loose to him that he ran & treed by himself. I think he is about 6 mths. old right now. Thanks, Bob, very happy with him so far! Charlie Radtke

Charlie, Pups were 5 months old last week. Glad yours is doing good. I've heard back on 4 others that are also tracking and treeing. Sounds like I got a good cross.

No one buys dogs from MN because the only good thing that ever came from MN is Interstate 35 South....

We've been telling that I35 joke in reverse for the last 30 years. Same as why do birds fly upside down over Iowa? Cause Iowa ain't even worth crapping on!
And the ever popular joke - Why don't they have cheerleaders during football games in Iowa? Cause they can't stop them from grazing on the field, lol

About pups and selling dogs, lack of hunters not the lack of game. The hunters we have are mostly all pleasure hunters and can find something cheap if they are patient. Way more dogs than people who want them. then, as mentioned before the further you go the better the dogs must be.

I get the hunter thing, even up here on the iron range... When I moved up here 4 yrs ago I was told by some co-workers they knew of some guys back in the 70's & 80's that ran B&T's and Blueticks. Up and down the hwy 53 corridor.

If you come to the MN. STATE CHAMPIONSHIP in Long Prairie on Sept. 5th and 6th. I will introduce you to some of the people that raise pups. I know one that just bred a top Black and tan female. I know of a litter of walkers, Another couple that stand a well known walker stud. A person that raises blueticks to start with and maybe a few more. There will be quite a few hunters from around the state and from out of state. Come on down If you like coon hounds you will enjoy yourself.

Show $15 Hunts $25
Purina hunt both nights. High score of either night will be State Champion.
Night Hunt Sept. 5th 8 PM
Bench show Sept 6th 4 PM
Night Hunt Sept. 6th 8PM
Club House 3/4 mile South of Long Prairie on Hwy 71. Signs will be posted.
Good food .
