GRNITECH ‘PR’ Melton’s Red Fire Ball

When looking at a list of Redbone Coonhounds studs, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Melton’s Red Fire Ball is a bit of an outlier. While there are a few that have produced more than their fair share, Fire Ball has produced the most pups in the breed, by more than 7.5%. He is also one of the most famous names in the breed’s history, on this side of Lil Ann and Ol Dan.

Like most of the hounds that we highlight here, Fire Ball was exceptional in the woods as well as leaving his mark as a reproducer of coon and big game hounds. As we will see, maybe he didn’t have the most impressive percentage, but you have to remember the context of the times. Less hunts, higher entry numbers, and also the popularity of the hounds in the big game packs of the mountains and far west.

Fire Ball was born in August of 1980 from a litter of 9 pups, and while looking at the litter, it looked like Mr. Joe Melton kept most of the cross for himself. Fire Ball was the only dog that finished out of the litter, but it would end up being a cross that left it’s impact on the breed. Fire Ball’s first litter hit the ground in May of 1983, just a couple months before his 3rd birthday. He continued to produce pups until he was right at 10-years old with a bulk of those litters coming late in his life from 1987-1990.

Unlike some of the stud dogs I’ve highlighted here, Fire Ball didn’t have a lot of litters that produced multiple titled dogs. It seemed like in just about every litter, there was a hound or two that finished out which does show consistency that you don’t often see. For the purposes of this short article, I’m going to highlight the GRNITECHs that he produced.

The first couple of GRNITECHs that Fire Ball produced were hounds that we will probably highlight on here down the road. The first was GRNITECH CH ‘PR’ Yellow River Red Rocky. Rocky was born in March of 1987 out of Fire Ball and Bachelder’s Red Flame. The next month in April of 1987, GRNITECH CH ‘PR’ Brown’s Ok. Red Twister was born from a cross out of Fire Ball and ‘PR’ Terry’s Miss Mable.

In May of 1988, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Stoney Creek Ringo was produced from a litter of 13 pups out of Fire Ball and GRNITECH ‘PR’ Herb’s Red Cinder. This litter saw 3 of the 13 puppies earn either a hunt or show title. Later that year, in October of 1988, Fire Ball was bred to another Bachelder female, this time, ‘PR’ Bachelder’s Red Ivy, to produce his 4th GRNITECH, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Bachelder’s Red Bow. His 5th GRNITECH was born in late October of 1988 out of NITECH CH ‘PR’ Lewis’ Red Brandy. This hound’s name was GRNITECH ‘PR’ Lewis’ Red Fireball.

Fire Ball’s last 2 GRNITECHs came in 1990 when he was 9-years old. In February of that year, a cross with ‘PR’ Jim’s Peckerwood Sadie produced GRCH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Pipkin’s Red Rooster. In what would be one of his last litters, a previous cross was made again as ‘PR’ Bachelder’s Red Ivy was bred to Fire Ball a second time to produce another GRNITECH, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Smiths Red Rosie.
