What drives you

About a year ago I received a message from Jeff Fisch about possibly breeding his female. Now, I have had several similar messages and honestly most are guys just beating the bush. Well Jeff followed up with me which surprised me and said he wanted to make the cross happen. We picked a date and said let's make a go at it. My wife was pregnant at the time with our first child and I knew the dates would be close.

My wife went into labor on February 4th late at night and on February 5th when she was about to deliver I kept getting calls from Jeff saying he was about to my house to get them bred. With him coming several hours away I felt bad that I couldnt be there so I called my Grandpa and luckily he was able to meet Jeff and get them bred. You can definitely say it's a day I will never forget.

Fast forward to right now and I have a beautiful baby boy and the best pup I have ever put a lead on. A friend at the time and now dog partner Grant Whitmer drove from Utah to Pennsylvania and bought 4 of the pups that came from this cross Main Street Blue x Poplar Run Ruthless. He kept and started one and had meantoned he was the brightest pup he'd ever been around. He treed a 300 yard drag like a pro when he was 4 months old. When he turned 5 months old he sent me a video of how excited he was that his little 5 month old pup sit treed 30 yards from the other dogs and held his tree. That night he came up with the name Unleash the Kraken.

He continued to hunt Kraken and he continued to impress him and that was this winter in New York and most nights it was in the teens and 20s. When Kraken was 7 months old he brought him to me and I was blown away at what he was doing. A few weeks later I put him in his first cast as a fresh 8 month old puppy. It was in the 20s full moon with a heavy frost. 4 dog cast and Kraken treed the only coon we seen for the win.

We set a goal to have a 10 month old Nite Ch and knew with the weather with a puppy it would be challenging. Only one cast Kraken has been in has the temps been above freezing.

Kraken was sitting with 3 UKC cast wins as of Friday night and he turned 11 months old on Saturday. I loaded him up Friday at 6 am and took him to work with me as it was the only way I could make the deadline for a double header 2 hours away. We were fortunate enough to win both rounds and accomplish our goal. Our next goal is to Grand Kraken as a 12 month old and it will be a real challenge but we honestly believe he has the brains and ability to accomplish it.

Kraken has won casts with 3 different handlers and treed coon from New York, Ohio, Alabama, and Mississippi all as a 10 month old puppy. The future is bright and I'm thankful for folks like Jeff who went out on a limb to breed his fine female.

THE KRAKEN

Congratulations on ALL the successes you have had lately. GOD is great, I am so thankful that you are able to hunt after what you have been through. Enjoy your dogs and family, but put GOD first in your life, he had a reason to spare you in that awful accident. Dave

Thank you Vic and Dave for the kind words. I went with couple good fellas last night for a pleasure hunt. When we cut Kraken alone he sunk in there deep and got one treed quick. They got a good video of him, it was a beautiful night to be in the woods.

Enjoy Kracken all you can, he sounds like a special dog. I hope to have one more " Kracken" in my life before I get to old to enjoy one. " Krackens" are rare make no mistake about that, I have owned many dogs, but few " Krackens" in the bunch. I sure hope you guys make that cross again and another Kracken shows up. Dave

This is the truth. My question becomes at what point does a dog like this become so valuable that it is more stress than enjoyment to hunt him in road infested Ohio?

You're right Ron it's definitely a chance we take with these dogs. I have been blessed to never have one hit. I do think that hunting dogs that don't run off game drastically helps keep dogs alive.

I only ask because I live with that fear constantly! I love my Garmin, but watching my little dog figure close in on the little red road line ruins a lot of nights for me. I agree about the off game also. If you have a dog that can drive a track they can get gone in a hurry.

Keep him safe as you can and enjoy the heck out of him

Ron, we ALL struggle with that issue, the better the dog the more our concerns for the dogs safety becomes a concern. Just remember that a ship is ALWAYS safer in the harbor, but ships are not built to sit in a harbor, our dogs are always safer in their kennels, but that's NOT what they are bred for. I got the best dog I have ever owned or hunted with killed one night ( railroad ) that put a crackdown on me for a long time. It took me a long time to get over that one ( if I ever did ), but I can not hunt worrying every time I cut loose. I do my best in deciding where to hunt and use my Garmin on every turn out, but we just never know. Saying that, I am determined to hunt without worry, when I can no longer do that, I WILL QUIT. Dave

That's great advice Dave. I hunt sarge bred plotts when I can and I got to see 3 generations of them die on the road. Sarge 2 sarge 3 and buckeye Ann....talk about setting a breed back

I've had some close calls with cars and trains. I live in an area where 200 acres is a big parcel. It took me 10 years to find a dog I'm happy with but boy when coon aren't moving she is taking a trip to find something to run. The other night she did almost 4 miles in 45 minutes and I never set foot in the woods before I caught her about 2 miles from turnout....surely a junk race...but lord is she fast. Earlier in the winter right at the house she caught and bayed a yote on a broke off log in a creek.

I'm working on breaking her, but last week she struck and was flying toward a main road, I was pressing the button but it wouldn't reach. I tore off in the truck to cut her off, got 100 yards from her off the road and she fell treed with a coon...I guess I was glad the shocker didn't reach.

I just hope she makes it long enough that I get to see her in her prime.

Wow. You sure have had some bad luck and I can see why you have a valid concern about getting one killed. I have gotten several killed over the years, it's the top dog getting killed that hurts the most. Average dogs are easier replaced, but losing them hurts. I don't know anyone who has hunted for many years that has not experienced losing one in some manner, it just comes with the territory. It's hard to turn a real good dog loose knowing that it might be the last time you see them alive, but really we have no choice if we are going to hunt. Garmin has sure been a big help to us in controlling our dogs and saving them in some cases, sure beats the beep beep systems. We really don't even have any real control over our own lives, much less our dogs. I just try to pray for a safe hunt for myself, my hunting buddies and our dogs every time we go hunting, it's always in GOD'S HANDS. Dave

Kraken's performance speaks great volumes about his abilities. He was coon crazy from the very first time he smelled one at just 10 weeks old. He treed his first drag shortly after that . That little sucker parked under the coon and treed for over 45 minutes while all the other pups would wonder around and play he stayed treed belly up to the bark chopping well over 100 barks per minute , i was afraid I might damage his vocal chords . He was my pick of the litter . Then one day Grant Whitmer called trying to buy him and i turned him down and he stayed persistent offering to buy as many as 4 pups if Kraken was part of the deal. So Grant drove from Salt Lake city Utah to pick up his pups and i offered him to stay at my house and hunt with Ruthless and a pup from her first litter from Kay's blue john . And he accepted and night time rolled around , so we load the dogs up and for the heck of it we throw kraken in the box too. We drove a short way to hunt at a friends place , so we unload the dogs walk them into the woods and cut two dogs loose (Spruce run Lightning and a female Grant had purchased along the way to my house) and Kraken is along for the ride. The two dogs go struck a track within 70 yds and kraken flies in there to see what the commotion is about , well i could see he was smelling something he liked and pretty soon he opened on track and began moving the track for himself , totally ignoring the other two. After a few minutes grants female comes treed and as we get close she leaves the tree , so i said lets walk her back in and see if she will get back on tree. As we approached the area this 4 month old pup is up on his hind legs winding hard and slips in about 50 yds in front of us and throws a ldouble bawl locate and starts treeing like he was a seasoned vet. We get to him and he is treed on a slick tree that is surrounded by 3 den trees. And from there he has progressed into a very nice young hound . I wish you guys the best of luck with him !
