Nite Hawk semen

Hi,

None. Forgot it was still on my profile. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. Wife had open heart surgery and complications. She has been getting all my attention except for some quick posts.

I do have Gr. Ch. ( 1st place win) Finley River Zig. He goes back to Nt. Ch. Finley River Chief over 90 times, Gr. Nt. Ch. Finley River Dan 30 times, Dual Gr. Ch. Finley River Dan 3 over 21 times, 1995 SWTWA Hall of Fame female Gr. Ch. Finley River Trap 4 times, and Dual Gr. Ch. PKC Ch. Finley Zoom twice, being a grandson on the topside of his pedigree and a greatgrandson on the bottom side. Trap is Zoom's mother. I raised her as a pup and sold her to Tom Wilbers. He owned Trap until she died. He is heavy Finley River bred.

I will breed Zig's neice to him next year. Those pups will have Chief in their pedigree over 300 times. Come for a hunt. He is not retired.

Good Hunting,
Robert

Most people think the clover dogs started with Hardwood Bozo but after reading about all the things on this post seems it goes farther back in the Finley River breeding.

I'll try to go into the pedigrees when I have a little more time to dive into them.

I know John and have for years .I've sold him a couple of different females through the yrs. .One was a daughter of Dewy and the other was a daughter of Molly and Logans Wild Quick . Both were coondogs and John was a true man of his word on both . John is still hunting and getting around he has the dog now named Smackdown and loves him to death . John also won the world hunt a few years ago and almost won it again last yr with Smackdown . He has stayed at my house and is a true gentleman and a legend in our sport . Always a man of his word and always a true coonhound man who imo has given his life to this sport and the betterment of the walker breed ...Bob Bush

Credit check

While credit is correctly given for promotion of Finley River dogs to John Monroe and Lonnie Mears, it is important to know that Mr. Herb Carsten deserves a lot of (if not all) of the credit for the start of Finley River dogs IMO. He is the one who hunted the Finley River in SW Missouri and stuck that name on the dogs. He is the man who owned Chief when he produced the litter Claxton's Finley River Spot (the dog John won the world hunt with) came from.....and Ailshie Ozark Dan--the sire of GrNt Carsten Finley River Buck. He made the cross of Ozark Dan and NtCh Finley River Bell to produce Buck and Chief to Bell to get FR Pete. Bell was single registered. She was a NtCh when not many were and she was a reproducer. I know John and Lonnie and they are both fine fellows and have done a lot to carry on/improve what they started with. I never met Mr. Carsten and he may the best or worst guy on the planet, but I do know a little about the history of this line of dogs and it is a shame to not mention a major contibutor and perhaps the man solely responsible for the name "Finley River".

I voted Lightning. John J. Monroe knows dogs and when he bought Lightning it was for his ability. That dude produced some track dogs! The first female I ever owned was a grand daughter of Lightning and Mears FR Dan. In 35 years I have never hunted with a track dog as good as she was. Not even close. I have hunted with about every combination of Dan bred dogs there are, but believe Lightning added something special when it came to running a track.

My favorite was an '80s model I called Do-Dog. Pleasure hunted only. He was FR Chief X FR Bell = FR Spike; Spike X Duvalls Lone Pine Lady = Wolfes Tree Picking Bill; Do-Dogs Sire.

The Bottom side went back to Merchant's Bawling Barney X Balls Candy = Balls Hickory Nut Harry; Harry was crossed on McGills Lone Pine Jill who was out of FR Pete X Duvalls Lone Pine Lady. Harry X M Lone Pine Jill = Pr Caw Caw Creek Jill ( Pleasure hunted) the Dam of Do-Dog. As good a well rounded dog as I ever had. He left our dogs behind on track from the time he was 6 months old on. He didn't tree a lick till he was 16 months old but was a tree dog after that. I really didn't expect a dog to tree much before 1 1/2 or 2 years old back then. He ate some 4 o'clock flower seed that were growng through the kennel fence and it killed him. Five years old, maybe six. Then I stumbled into a line that was treeing at six months old and got excited and fooled with them for years till I finally figured out they were just about noaccont.

Herb Carsten

Hi,

Agree with GES. Herb faded to the background. Thanks for the reminder. Most great dogs usually end up with more than one man involved with them. As with most statements, there is always some exceptions.

Good Hunting,
Robert

Herb Carsten

I knew Herb well, he passed away a few years ago, his Son Jerry still lives over at Branson but stopped hunting years ago. I hunted with Jerry many times and he used to talk about being a small boy when Herb bought Chief as a pup and how he held him in a shoe box on the trip back from Iowa. Good people.

HERB CARSTEN

For sure Herb Carsten was responsible for the name of the strain called Finley River. It could of easily have been the Corn Belt strain since that was Chief's name when Herb brought him home.

I had relatives that lived in Springfield. Herb had an Auto Glass place. I remember driving past it a number of times. No intention on trying to slight Herb Carsten in any way. I appreciated the time he spent with this young kid sharing information about hounds when I was visiting Springfield.

But I still have to stick with my belief of John Monroe deserving the title of Mr. Finley River for his promotion of the Finley River Strain. This is my opinion and with it and 4 quarters you can buy a USA Today.

Herb sold Finley River Chief. Actually I believe 2 times. He sold him then got him back before he sold him to John Guilford. Herb advertised Chief at stud some, then Mr. Guilford ran an ad on Chief.

Howard Claxton advertised Finley River Spot some before John Monroe ever bought him. Chief was 8 years old plus when John bought him. It was after John Monroe bought Spot and Chief and promoted them that the Finley River Strain really made a place on the map.

Again still my opinion and you will still need 4 quarters to buy a USA Today.

Here is an ad by Herb Carsten BEFORE Finley River Chief.

Here is an ad on Finley River Buck. It is after Herb sold him but the picture is the picture Herb used on his first ad on Carsten's Finley River Buck.

Finley River

I agree with you 100% that John Monroe should get the credit for the Finley River breed, had he not bought Spot and won the world hunt, then bought old Chief the Finley River strain would have probably stayed around Springfield, Missouri.

A lot of younger hunters probably don't know what happened to Finley River Spot. He was treed and John was walking to him when a farmer shot him. Can you imagine what that would do to you even for a potlicker much less a World Champion that could have made you a ton of money.

Zig and Zoom

Hi,

Will have pics of Zig and Zoom on Zig's thread in a few days along with Trap's mother and father. I raised them from pups and bred them to produce Trap, Zoom's mother and Radar, which, several of Roger Prater's dogs go back to.

Good Hunting,
Robert

The one that had the most influence is not listed on the poll, Finley River Dan.

This poll was on dogs that John Monroe owned. He didn't own Dan.

Finley River Dan had the most influence on that breed. Dan wasn't even competition hunted until he was six years old. Don't think he ever lost a cast until after he made Grand. Pete was in some good dogs as well as Beaver Lake Magic. The rest I'm sure we're good dogs but didn't have the influence that Dan had on that line

Rick, I never hunted with him. I don't know if he was a littermate to Ringo or not. I am thinking he may be a younger brother but don't know.

If we are talking about the same Finley River Dan, Mears' Finley River Dan was 4 years old when he placed 6th in the 1970 World Hunt. The same year Finisher won it.
