What a hunt !

I went hunting last night with Mark Whatley and David Granbury. We had 3 Wheeler pups and Extra Man . We had dogs tree together , split and scatter but we managed to make 11 trees with coons a few maybes and a couple slicks . It was one of the best hunts Ive been on despite the heat . The high light of the night was when Mark shook a couple coons out of a sapling and while the pups were after one coon the other came out of the tall grass and tried to crawl up my leg then turned and ran back in sought out Whatley and they did battle . If a bear and Whatley tangle my money is on Whatley . In 3 1/2 hours of hunting we saw over 20 coons . Im looking forward to my next hunt with these guys . I hope all of our hunting spots have a good kitten crop like this one !

You hunt sounds like my first visit to the Dallas Zoo, I saw coons everywhere laying in the trees. I asked one of the Zoo keepers how they kept those coons from leaving? He laughed and told me that they were intruders, not coons they had. The coons were only there to steal food from the Zoo animals and man there were a lot of coons there. Saw a picture once in the Dallas paper where there was over 30 coons in a tree in a Dallas yard. Never coon hunted while I lived in Dallas, but there seemed to be plenty around there. Lol. Dave

Every one says East Texas is "thin coon " . It's not ! But most guys have 2 spots they hunt over and over and shoot coons . Leave the gun at home and recut as many times as you can in the same woods and one may be surprised .

I lived in Dallas for one year back when I was a young executive. I did not coon hunt then, but I know there were a lot of coon around Dallas, I did fish a lot in those days and caught a lot of fish, as there were some pretty good fishing spots close to Dallas ( bass and crappie). Never seen so many hawks as there were around in those parts, seemed like there was one in every tree. Lol. Dave

I have a friend that lives in Athol Kansas , Before I changed jobs I was making 2 trips a year to coon hunt with him . You talked Ng about the land of plenty . Walk up land giant coons that run like nothing I've seen . No snakes . Rob Ocker guides deer , quail and pheasants and fed us like kings ! I want to try White River this year . I have a few above average hounds and a few prospects that my buddies/ partners help me hunt up . There's nothing like cutting a hound 6 or 7 times and just video the coon . I don't kill many it seems to me mine do better with only about 3 or 4 per year . I wonder how many others give their hounds

Sounds Great

Especially for Texas!! didn't know they had coon pop. like that anywhere in the state like that. Will find out for myself in Jan., when me & the camper head your way, when we have -50 wind chills up here.

Had similar hunt end of May in S Mich with Steve Burkholder & Larry Harvey. Made 14 trees in 3 1/2 hrs. Saw 11 coon & had 3 big bushy trees that we couldn't get light thru. Only had 3 dogs on same tree whole hunt. Great hunt with good friends is what it is all about. Take care, Ron.

I even had a good hunt like that with Tar . He guided me in his coon zoo on a hunt . I made a bunch of $ with Extra Man that night . Old Tar has a nice set up for a club just don't let him take you to Rocky Point . You can't pipe sunlight thru that mess . That coon ran out of that thicket and gave us the California howdy and was gone .We had to cut the dogs out of that mess

You sound like my kind of coon hunter, one that enjoys hearing and seeing good dog work, one that knows the value of conservation, and one that proves a good dog does not need a lot of fur in its mouth. I share the same values, like an old hunter told me one time, a dead coon is useless, a live coon can provide many happy moments over and over again. I wish you many happy and safe nights in the future. Dave
