Coon hunt with air gun.

Ok, who hunts with a air gun? I hunted with a guy last week that had one and I was impressed, I will own one this week, I’m doing some research but think I like the Umarex Gauntlet .22 cal. It shoots 1000fps Any personal info (not hearsay) you have fill free to post. Thanks.

I've played with them some and the only hangup I have with them is that while they're plenty powerful and can be incredibly accurate, they seem awfully specific to a sighted in range. Point of impact will vary significantly shooting at a target 20 feet up compared to one 100 feet up and 30 yards away. They're neat to play with but I don't see any practical application advantages to them over a .22 rifle...

I have a very nice air rifle. A Benjamin Discovery. I can't think of one advantage to coon hunting with it over my Marlin.22.

Airguns

Weight is the problem I see in hunting with them, I have several more accurate and light weight 22 rifles that I hunt with. The only advantage would be noise and using them in places you needed to be extra quiet. IMO. Dave

I have a Benjamin nitro 2 22cal with a laser hits what the laser is on every time it is heavy though the advantage is that it is quite a bit quieter than a 22

Why not use a 22 rifles with cb longs? They are as quiet as a air rifle. Dave

The only honest answer I can give you is I Don’t Have One an I Won’t One, not interested in hidden or sneaking anywhere! I have guns of all cal, but don’t have one of these air guns an would love to add it to my collection, look at some videos on YouTube, you may be amazed at the power these things have.

Tim

Now I see! I have one myself and yes they are powerful and accurate. I would enjoy a lightweight model, it just doesn't exist in a powerful gun. I like the high end Gamos, Dave

Weight is something I’m looking at, if I can stay between 3 to 5lbs I will be happy, most of the weight comes from accessories like a scope, I will figure it out and get one that works for me.

Might wanna look at your state regs before you make a purchase, but take a look at some of the big bore air rifles on the market. They'll make any gun nut take a look in his piggy bank...

You should try opening up your mind or not opening your mouth, if you have no experience with one why comment! I have 5 22cal, I have two bows and one cross bow, I like slinging $17 sticks at deer, and I will enjoy my new air rifle after I find the one that fits me.

Tim I have a RWS Commemorative 20th anniversory Diana that is German made. 1000 ft per sec with the old style pellets. Think I could pick up 100 fps with the new style pellets. Bought it for doing Wildlife Damage Control in town where I couldn't use firearms. Not a bad weapon at all, just heavy. Killed a lot of different critters with it. Tried coonhunting with it when I wanted to be quiet but due to weight went back to 22 shorts.

Weight seems to be the biggest issue, I looked at one yesterday that a guy had built, he took a Gamo and changed the tank, trigger and a few other things it was just over 3lbs single shot, 1100fps, 3 shots he had to recharge it. It will be a lot of fun squirrel or coon hunting or just plinking.

I wouldn't recommend them on a big northern boar coon. I have seen too many that didn't flinch at a direct hit with .22 rim fire ammunition. In fact, I am so picky about my ammo I only use one specific brand and type.

Air guns have come along way. I have used them to shoot hogs so they are plenty powerful ones to coon hunt with. I myself don't see the point the good ones are **** expensive and heavy. A 22 is as quiet or quitter if you have one packed or use cbs.
