90% yes if

If you are comparing Coon/Den to empty trees then yes. 35 years ago there were a few more 90% accurate dogs, probably a half a dozen in every county. 1 or 2 of those 6 might have been fit for the night hunts. Most of those dogs then took a long time to set down and tree. They would check a tree, then check again, then check again each time circling farther out from the tree. If any coon track was in that area, they would choose to run it, rather than tree. But when they treed you took the gun. If it wasn't a den tree, you would be using the gun.
This was back when I first started coon hunting. A winning competition dog back then would miss now and then, have a coon 75% of the time. Dogs packed up more then, so the winner stayed on the first coon up while the track dog trailed on and on. The winner could take the pressure of the rest trailing out of there. He was a stay put tree dog. Winners got bred more over the years.
Well balanced hounds were kinda rare 35 years ago, about the same as today. If "everyone" bred for balance all these years, I wonder if we would have more of them?

I agree with you 100 % if your dog is accurate in the fall and winter he is going to be the same in the spring and summer

Are there no mullberry trees where you live?

Well not exactly. I have a old gyp that's real accurate. When the persimmons come on she absolutely loves them. She goes from a dog that you can count on seeing a coon to one that you can count on seeing a persimmon tree. Also the leafs on trees seriously changes the thermals and a dogs ability to work air currents. There is a lot more to treeing coons than just following a track to a tree. Temp and humidity change how they can run a track ect....

He is out of Mafia. And I'm not so sure he is all that accurate. Do know that he treed the 26 in a row on the outside but I have seen him mess up on Persimmon and Cherry trees. He tries very hard to be accurate but sometimes feeding trees get to him. I will say he is as good as I have ever had but he sure isn't perfect. By the way the night the 26 streak ended he made three den trees. They are all just dogs and I believe they all make mistakes. Some people don't seem to see them very well.

Michael Rosemond

Persimmons are ripe in the fall in Tennessee and I judge a dogs accuracy in the fall and winter months. Treeing wrong in a persimmon tree is no different than any other tree ( yes I have seen several dogs tree up empty persimmon trees, but the truly accurate dogs do not tree empty persimmon trees). One of the most accurate dogs I have ever owned was also, one of the quickest tree dogs I have ever seen. She would never even locate on a empty persimmon tree, don't matter how many dogs were treeing, she would leave that tree tracking and always finished her track with a coon. She was a freak and the best I have ever seen. Dave

90% year around? Lol

That hound has never lived or will live.

"IF" you hunt year around here {Mi.} your hound will look;

Great in The Spring-Kittens and no leaves.
Ok in summer-leaves/Canopy
Great in fall-no leaves
So,So to Ok in Winter and Rut when 50% or more of the time you get dens.

**Unless your counting Dens in winter and during Rut as 'coon seen'......90% don't exist, never has, never will hunting Year around....PERIOD**

That is a very honest statement. If a man doesn’t lie to himself and has a dog that can keep a 60-70% average for an entire year that man has a coon dog.

I prefer a dog that locates off body scent as they tree where the coon is not where he was, but they will miss at times due to air currents.

I agree with your high accuracy comment
Like you said those dogs won't gamble and dogs that will gamble tree coon other dogs miss

Eliminating circle point or if a dog accumulated 400 circle it's scratched .

The circle point on the score card imo is 1 reason why inaccuracy is tolerated.
Get these dogs that can't produce plus points out of the breeding pool !!!

When a without-a-doubt slick is treated like a possum in a champion cast, you will see more accurate dogs.

Mafia , I am here to tell ya , Tom and I have hunted a whole lot this past year and we went 25-30 nights treeing at least 1 if not 3-5 coon every night before we had a bad one. We hunted Spavinaw in late January , we had 3 old dogs I , Preacher , my Mabel and Judge dogs and i may have had a young dog or 2 along but anyway we hunted about 20 miles without a bark and finally a cold track that ended at a big den tree. we called it a night.

Accurate dogs exist , I have personally hunted with 3 that I know had most every coon regardless of the time of year. They are rare in today’s world but I have seen it first hand. The hunts you and Tom describe are ones a lot of folks don’t get to see. Good luck in the future and enjoy as many of those as you can!
