There are a several of trains of thought on this. One is the tie at every tree method. That does reinforce to the dog that YOU control when it is released and only you. Many people swear by it. Other people will grab the dog and lightly switch it back on the tree, if it starts off grab it and do it again. I am not much on that one.
I learned this one from a friend, it is kinda a modified version of what I had done anyway and I saw the results and have stuck with it. Teach the dog a one word command that means stop no matter what!!!!!! Mine, I stole from my friend is aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaant. If the dog even thinks about coming off the tree holler aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaant! If it looks like it is gonna turn to leave holler it. You will be surprised how quick the dog will catch on and how handy that command is. Now you may have to wear a hat out on that feist's head because they are some of the hard headedest dogs next to a beagle there is to get that command in it's head. But that is about your only hope.
I teach my young dogs from pups that command means stop and it is already instilled in them before we go to the woods. It sure makes things easier, your dog being a couple of years old of course will take a little time but they can be taught.
