Snakes in the winter

Saturday night I was hunting here in WV in Roane County it was around 36 and we was close to some rock bluffs on Sunday when I went to feed I noticed my males leg was swelled up triple the size so we took him to the vet and did X-rays no broken bones found two puncture holes above his pad the vet said he was bitten by a Rattler from the way the swelling was and the color of his skin!!!

D and L

I got one bite a few years ago on a super cold freeze your hands off without gloves winter night. Dog treed high on the mountain in the Rick bluffs. Snake do not hibernate, they are active all winter in their dens crawling around in their dens. I have watched videos of den activity in the winter, they placed cameras in the den to capture the snakes activity. Taught me a valuable lesson about looking in rock holes on the mountains where we have rattlesnakes, it pays to watch that kind of behavior, I would say you would get a stronger dose, due to the fact they are not feeding and using their venom. Dave
