I wonder why the "pack dog mentality" has to change after 50 years?

I like them to pack it shows a dogs true talents. As long as I am getting a high percentage of first trees with the coon I don’t care who is there with me.

I want the full count down applied. Dogs now days are born with an independent nature. Packing is a thing of the past. A me tooing dog is just that , it doesn’t have the knowledge or want too to do it’s own thing.

A lot of dogs don’t pack because they can’t compete heads up. What good does it do ole deep and alone on one coon if the pack gets two behind him ?

I want a dog that does it’s own thing. Probably catch it for saying this. Packing is truly the right way to do competition coon hunting. Dogs are competing against one another that way. Nowadays they are split up, working the clock . Handler against handler. But that is just the way it is .

Y'all talk about today's dogs " just becoming" more independent like it is something magical that the dogs have done all on their own. I wonder why most dogs have "lost" that pack mentality and become more independent? Some say that hunters and rule changes have to keep up with the dogs like the dogs are leading the hunters.

If they would adopt no leash lock they may just see how many could be treed between him and the truck, a concept those that haven't hunted under it don't understand.

Idk we've hunted the same style since 1992. And he had the same kind before then.

Exactly: in heavy coon where I'm at a dog can score more going to the distant dog (he/she) gets more hunt time that is one reason for getting rid of leash lock rule.

My age and these type of dogs is why I now only run beagles . I will always enjoy hearing a pack of dogs work a track. If I am out with friends ,I do not like dogs heading the four points of the compass. 😀

your not the only 1 that feels the same way and the coonhunts are losing more hunters all the time to beaglers but the fellows doing the hunts are hung up on independence

I like a dog that is able to hunt alone and strike quickly...and pack up quickly as well if another dog opens on a track...
