Hey Doc.I got a 9 year old female that I was hunting about 3 night a week.The last 2 times I hunted her she started If on 3 legs but got loosened up and hunted decent.I checked her over and didn't find anything.Now for the last 2 weeks her front ankle is swelled up and she's only walking on 3 legs.Is there anything I can do for her or should I take her to the vet?Is this sort of thing comments with older dogs?

Dr. I have a dog with a good bawl mouth, chop mouth tree dog. But his loose his mouth after 1 or 2 trees. he squeaks. What should I look for or what do you recommend? Thanks in advance.

It would be good to have this dog examined to rule out septic arthritis or infectious causes of arthritis such as Lyme Disease.

Icing helps the joint if it is hot or warm. Anti Inflammatories will help with the inflammation as well.

Did this just start? Is he barking in the kennel too? Any signs of coughing?

Might be a good idea to have him examined by your vet. Doxycycline and Prednisone have worked in the past for dogs that lose their voices from swelling of the vocal chords.

Thanks Doc. I was thinking it could've been the usual thorn in the foot or something of that nature.Its been going on for two weeks and her ankle swelled up a little bit so I'm probably going to take her in.

Depends on why he's on Doxy. If it's for a tick borne illness then no.

Keep us in the loop and let us know what you find out. Septic arthritis is not good and requires aggressive antibiotic therapy.

pup

I have a pup that just turned 3 months old. The problem that I have is that this morning her lower jaw on the right hand side is really swollen. I have looked inside her mouth and outside as well and can see nothing. She doesn't seem to be bothered with it and is eating and drinking. I have have her benadryl and I'm gonna wait to see if it goes down. Do you have any recomendations?

Depends on which worms you are talking about. Some are transmitted from fecal to oral route through the soil, some are transmitted from eating infected meat, and some are transmitted by vectors such as Mosquitos.

Dogs should be on a monthly deworming program with a good broad spectrum dewormer that prevents heartworm disease as well.

Sounds like a possible infection or blunt trauma with swelling. Infected teeth are not uncommon in pups that can lead to abscesses as they are erupting.

I'd have it examined.

Hey guys, now is the time to get your flea and tick products on those dogs. The ticks are back!
Simparica has been the best systemic product so far and there is a new one about to hit the market this year. I say it's the best because it has the fastest tick kill speed that is half the time of NexGard or Bravecto. That's what you want, speed of kill and something that maintains that speed of kill for the full duration of the treatment period which is 30-40 days for Simparica and Nexgard and 90 days for Bravecto. Bravecto loses it's speed of kill after day 60 but for 60 days it's a really good product. Nexgard takes up to 8 hours to kill ticks vs 4 hours or less for Simparica.

I also recommend using Permethrin topical spray along with Simparica. Apply a light mist before cutting the dogs loose and spray your clothes down as well. Keep a bottle in your truck all the time. Don't be lazy when it comes to ticks because it can cost you and your best hounds a lot of money and heartache. Most of these tick born illnesses never go away. Even with the most aggressive treatments. It's way better to prevent. I think using Permethrin along with a systemic like Simparica is the closest we will get to 100% protection from tick born illnesses. You can also use a Seresto collar in combination with Simparica.

PM me if you need any help finding them. I got a big shipment of Seresto collars in and they are priced below internet prices to my coonhunting friends. I'm doing my part to help your hounds, now you do yours!

Hey doc. I'm at the vet as I type this. I have a dogs with a bad hotspot and the vet is giving me some topical antibiotics and salve to put on it. He said it's not bad enough for oral antibiotics yet but if it comes to that what oral antibiotics are good for this. Thanks again for your help.
