batteries dying fast

Bruce I just purchased a new 320 from you, thanks for fast service. Problem I am having is batteries are dying fast since I loaded birdseye on 320. My old one I only have part of state, but new one I downloaded all of S.C Was wondering if this is causing problem. If so can I unload part of the maps. I use lithium batteries.

The 320 is a little hard on batteries. There are some settings you can do to help out like keeping the backlight to MIN. and reining it in the battery saver mode. There is also a power cable you can plug in if you run it in your truck much to build maps. Some use Rechargeable batteries, I personally just use Duracell Copper Top and get maybe three nights of hunting out of them.

Also, that battery low alert on your 320 will sound prematurely in my opinion.
Don't throw the batteries out and put new ones in when it does this, you may be surprised how long that 320 will play after that alert is given, especially if it is not constantly on.
The 320 is definitely harder on batteries than the 220 though!

Alpha Question

Bruce, any suggestions on my garmin alpha and my birds eye view... the back ground of the view is Black.. and it will not stay zoomed in... you zoom it in and about 2 or 3 minutes you have to zoom it in again.. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The zoom I think I can help you with. Turn the map and dog zoom off. As far as background the birdseye is dark. Would love to hear others cure for this. combining it with some other maps at times help.

Your exactly right. Update your 320 and you can then attach the collars.

I have a alpha. Some if my collars update like they should and some every few minutes. I thought the update rate was controlled by the hand held part so how is this possible and how can I fix it. One of them just came from Garmin for not picking up at all so all updates should be done in it

First thing would be to check the update rate set on each collar. Guess I am wondering how you know the update rates are different. The update rate is controlled by the handheld but the signal has be be coming from the collar. Could have an antenna problem or dirty connection on the antenna. Several interesting things to look at here.

how do I check and change the update rate. The ones that update like I want I can tell how the dogs went and where they are. The one that updates slow will not lose signal but shows all straight lines between updates and takes several minutes to update. Sometimes it moves several hundred yards between updates

update rate

go to collar info page, hit menu, drop down to change up date rate, must have collar on and tracking. check the collar you like, see what update rate it is on, set the other the same.

If battery gets weak while tracking the update rate will change auto to preserve batt.

Here's one for Bruce or any Garmin guy. I have been having a Bunch of issues with the new Dc 50 collar. I have 2 dc 50's 1 has had no issues the other has had a bunch. All of the issues are with the same collar. I always check to make sure I have my dogs on the 320 before turning loose and collars have signal. I turned my dog Rebel loose that wears this dc 50 problem collar one night and It showed him at 350 yards and he was straight in front of me on the road at about 40 yards. I could see him plain as day no way he was that far. Well last night I turn him loose with the dc 50 same collar. Check to make sure all collars have signal and picked up by 320. They go hunting and check back. We turn them back up the hollow and follow them in the truck. After getting about halfway of the hollow I stop to see where the dogs are and listen to see if they are running. I get the 320 out of my vest and hit the button the see how many yards they are and NO Rebel. He was not on my dog screen and not on my dog list it was like Rebel had never been on my system. Well after about 30 minutes he came back and the collar was flashing green like it always does. I took it off and went to add dog put his name in and it picked it back up and had no issues the rest of the night. Why would it just Delete my dog for no reason. I didn't do it. It was there when I turned him loose and 30 minutes later it was gone. Also I have had the issue where the 320 shows my dog is in the opposite direction of where they actually are. Garmin we have some issues that need to be addressed and hopefully you guys are working on a fix. Also my system was bought new in DEC and the collar I been having Issues with was bought new I think in Feb maybe March all collars are up to date on software and so is my 320. Thanks for any help.

.

My first guess is that it did not delete your dog but stopped tracking on it. When that happens the dog goes off of the main page which can also be called the compass page. If that happens check the DOG LIST and you should see your dog there and then restart tracking.

Now why does this happen. Interference.
How many other collars do you have on. If there are one or two others on I would suggest changing the ID numbers. Keep in mind the last number is the one that needs to be different.

Now if this was the only collar on I would send it back for a replacement.

Thanks Bruce for the response. You are right about the compass screen it did not show him on the compass screen at all . But when I went to the dog list screen he was not on that screen either it was like he had never been on my system at all. When he checked back I had to take the collar off the dog and add it back to my system. It had deleted it completely from my system it did not show him on the compass screen or the dog list screen. Also I run 4 collars on my system. A dc 40 a dc 30 and 2 dc 50's. But last night I was only using 3 collars the 2 dc 50's and a dc 30. The Dc 40 was in the truck but not being used. When I went to dog list it showed the dc 30, the dc 40 and only 1 dc 50 the other had wiped off the system on the compass screen and dog list screen. It was like the other dc 50 had never been added to the system at all. That's the first time I have ever seen a system do that.

If I had any more problems out of it I would be looking to get it replaced under warranty.

Garmin has made vast improvements in the past couple years with their TECH line. I know for a fact now they actually track problems and forward that information forward to their engineers.

I said that because I think it is a good idea to always call them and share your problems with them. That way they know there is a problem and like I said they show all signs of wanting to solve these problems.
