OK, I'm finally getting around to posting some more pics. We had a late one last night and didn't get back to the truck until just after dark, so I didn't have time last night. I'm a couple days behind on the pictures of the hunts, but I'm going to keep posting them in order, as I get time.
We turned Smoke, Venom, and Storm loose on this one. They got it in a tree and Brian went into them. As the rest of us arrived at the tree the lion jumped out, so we turned the dogs loose and they treed it again in a couple hundred yards. As we were getting close to the second tree the lion jumped out again, except this time it decided to stop and fight. Brian went rushing in with the hunter as the rest of us were following close behind. As Brian got close trying to position the hunter for a shot when the dogs cleared, the dogs got braver and were really pressuring the lion. The lion turned it's head to get Smoke and Storm off it's back end, and Venom decided to take the opportunity to jump in and grab it on the back of the neck. Just as she made her move the lion whipped it's head back around and reached out and snagged her with one paw and pulled her in and started biting at her head. The dogs were still to tight on the lion for the hunter to shoot so Brian stepped in and kicked it in the head twice to make it let go of Venom. It worked well enough to make it stop biting at her although it still had ahold of her with it's paw and she couldn't get away. Brian hollered at the hunter to shoot and he stepped in and made a great shot in a high pressure situation. The quick thinking and actions under pressure, of Brian and the hunter, probably saved Venom's life. Luckily all the dogs only had minor nicks and scatches and will be just fine with a good dose of antibiotics. I did find a couple bite marks on Venom's tracking collar, so it must have helped protect her some.
Happy Hunter
