Friday night I took Blueduck and Merle to gum swamp. Claude met me at the Frost crossing at 9:30 and we headed to the woods. I had passed up the road where I was wanting to turn, so I just cut Merle of the end of the Steel Bridge road. He went south down the swamps edge then wheeled around and headed north, Merle struck a feeding track about 150 yards on up the swamp. He worked it another 200 yards and treed. He was treed on a huge Pin Oak between the edge of the swamp and a cutover. It didn't take me long to find him. I petted Merle up and headed back to the ranger. Next I cut Blueduck up Wall Bayou, he struck right off the road working the track through the stick stuff on the side of the road. When he got to the bridge, he started having trouble. He would cross the road but couldn,t move it, down in the water, still coldn't move it. The bridge is build like a cattle guard and makes it hard to walk across. Blueduck trailed that coon across the bridge and was off again. He took the track off the south side of the road and treed. I tied him up and looked up to see two eyes looking back at me. Next I sent Merle up and old logging road toward a feeder. Merle stayed gone for about two hours before he opened. He barked two or three times then treed. I saw eyes before I made it to the tree. Actually had two coons in this tree. Now for the sad part of my story. Janey, my female pup had never been left alone, so I took her to Rhetts house and put in the pin with Clara and Dees. Long story short, they got out and hit the swamp behind Rhetts house. Staurday morning Dees came home and Rhett had to go get Clara out the swamp, but Janey wasn't with her. We haven't seen her since. Makes me sick when I think about it. We had just got her treeing on a hide. Thats the hard part of coonhunting for me.

Janey treeing on a hide 2 days before we lost her. This was what was going through my head when I thought she was gone for good. Glad to have her back. She might not ever make anything, but I sure want to give her a chance.

Rhett donated this pups for auction to the Lincoln Co CHA for the cancer fund raiser. Chase Mclver won the bid, and named him Huck Fin. I’m sure he will be on his way exploring the river bottoms in the near future. Chase sent this video last week. Good luck with him Chase, I think he will make a good one.

Took Merle up to Brookheaven Ms. to their UKC hunt Friday night. Merle got beat by a walker dog on the bench and by the same dog in the woods. Lol We were having a hard time treeing a coon, and Merle treed with 20 mins left in the hunt. We made it to the tree with no coon seen after 10 mins of shining. There were only 3 mins remaining in the hunt, and the guy with the walker took a swing for the fence, and connected. His dog was 900 yards and you could just hear him. When we got to the tree, he had a coon. Good group of guys to hunt with. It’s always a pleasure to hunt with a good group that can have fun even if the coons are not moving. Thanks goes out to John Adams for taking us to the woods.

Saturday night, I took Merle to Franklinton La. to their UKC hunt. Merle just flat out got beat by a little walker female. I think she is really a Bluetick in a walkers hide. Really nice, and opens good on a track , just like I like. We made 4 trees and looked at one coon. The little walker female had first and first on this tree. Thanks goes out to Heath Spears for taking us to the woods. Before they called out the cast, a young man, I would say in his late 30’s, said a prayer. Let me tell you, he really laid it on the line. Touched my heart !! I had the pleasure of drawing out with him also. I wish I could remember his name.

Took Blueduck and Merle to Gumswamp last night. It had rained, and cooled off some, so I headed out right after I got home. I sent Blueduck up an old logging road at 7:15. I was searching his tree at 7:45. I guess he treed a squirrel , because there sure wasn’t a coon in this tree. Next I sent Merle down Wall Bayou. He treed right at dark, too much light to shine good and not enough light to see the tree good. I don’t think he had anything by the way he was treeing anyways. Next I sent Blueduck off the end of the Steel Bridge road. He struck hot track at about 250 yards. He was running it hard and was getting out of hearing. I drove around to another logging road to get closer. When I killed the ranger, he was treed, 360 yards. I found him on a huge Pin Oak that was hollow at the bottom. Looking up at the base of the tree, I see two eyes looking back down at me. I gave Blueduck a good petting and headed out.

I picked up Rhett at 7:30 and we headed to Gumswamp. When we parked the truck and got out to unload the ranger, two dogs came out from the weeds. Terrible looking fellows, a male and female. Somebody dropped them off I guess, very friendly and still in good health. I cannot understand for the life of me why someone would do that. Just leave an animal to starve. Anyways, we turned Case and Clara out in a little Oak slash, between a pine thicket and a cutover. 75 yards in they struck. 3 minutes late they were treed. Rhett started to them through the woods and I drove around to get closer. When I killed the ranger I was 50 yards from the tree. They were treed up a smaller Pin Oak that was real thick. We searched the tree as best we could but never got him to look. Next we sent Blueduck up an old ditch that cut through a good hard wood bottom. He struck a hot track at about 100 yards in. He ran it 150 yards then treed. We made our way through the thick palmetto and found him on a good side leaning Pin Oak. I tie him back and backed up to look. As soon as I hit my squall, he looked from the top fork. I petted old Blueduck up good and headed back to the Ranger. It’s getting late by this time, so I asked Rhett if he was ready to call it a night (which I was). Rhett said one more. Ok, the last turn out is the one that gets you!!! We sent Case and Clara up an old logging, and they struck an old bad track 160 yards in. They work the track together for a while, before Case started trailing off to the right and Clare trailed left. Case got pretty deep and was having a hard time, with Clara having the same results or worst. Case had located a few times but would not settle on a tree, and kept moving deeper. Clara finely made her way to him and started giving him some help. They had went about 50 more yards went Case gave them three long bawls and turned it over to that steady ringing chop, Clara backed him. We drove down the old logging road to within 175 yards, and started fighting the palmettos. We found them on a huge Pin Oak, and didn’t take long to find eyes. I told Rhett, that it was a good thing they didn’t catch this one on the ground because it was huge. After Rhett put his eyes on him, it turned out to be two coons in a ball. Up the limb a little further, two more laid there. We left them all in the tree and headed out. It was after midnight by the time I got to bed.

Blueduck treed

NICE

Beautiful pictures Tommy. Sounds like a nice hunt for as hot as it is. Two more months and we will start to feel a little cool air at night maybe. Hope your pups are doing good, Take Care.

Donald came by at 7:15 and we made our way to Gumswamp. We cut Merle and Ms Kitty off the Steel Bridge road. Merle went deep and stayed gone a long time without a bark. I caught him when he came out to the road. We drove around and crossed the steel bridge and sent Blueduck and Emmy Lou down a logging road headed east. Blueduck drifted to the north and made a circle back south. He struck a hot track and started pushing it hard. The coon came out to the road, ran down the road a little and cut back in, and headed south again. He went around the end of the dead end road and headed back to us. He was 75 yards off the road when he passed us, then turned to the road. I had just put my light on the road when the coon popped out, and ran the road about 30 yards and cut back in. Blueduck was 40-50 yards behind him and applying pressure. 300 yards farther he treed, but didn’t sound right. We drove within 50 yards of him and started in. When I got closer it was plan that he caught the coon on the ground. Blueduck was baying when I got to him. I caught the coon by the tail, my light came off my head, scrabbling to keep the coon off me in the dark, Blueduck grabbed it and pulled it out my hand. He finished it off pretty quick. And we headed to the ranger. After we got in the ranger, I reached for my glasses and they were gone. I got these glasses Monday!!! Three day with new glasses, and they gone now. But I still was happy with our hunt.

HTX

Rhett and I took Case and Blueduck to the HTX at Watson Friday night. I took three dogs on down to Gumswamp; Case, Blueduck, and Brain’s Blue Hoss. All three earned PASSES. Marty Freemen is hunting Hoss to finish him to Grand, for the Brian family, Harvard Brain own Hoss before his passing. We cut Case off the end of the Steel Bridge road. It didn’t take long till Case had a hot one going. He tree just inside the pines on a mid size pine. After searching for a few minutes, we got him to look from the top. Case had used 30 minutes and needed to hunt the rest. We sent him up Wall Bayou, and he struck an old cold track and treed in a small oak that when up into a big pine with only a few minutes left. We couldn’t find this one.
Next we sent Hoss down an old logging road. He took an cold track deep and treed on Edwards Bayou. Rhett found the coon in the top of a maple tree. Hoss used up the whole 60 minutes to tree this one. He did a great job!
For the last drop, We sent Blueduck into the swamp on the edge of Wall Bayou. He struck a bad track and couldn’t do anything with it. He came out and received a fault. We moved him on down the road and cut him out again. He when in and struck at 150 yards. He ran it a short distance and treed. We found the coon pretty quick and had 15 mins left to hunt. I cut him again to use up the last few minutes.

I took Merle and Blueduck Monday night after the rain had passed. It still had lighting in the distance, but clear skies above. I turned Blueduck out at the edge of the swamp next to Wall bayou. He worked the swamp’s edge and finally struck at 780 yards. I could barely hear him with all the rain frogs, and couldn’t get any closer. He only opened a few times , before making a big loop and coming back closer. When he got to 400 yards, I called him on in. Next I sent Merle down an old logging road. He struck a track close to 300 yards in and was opening good. He took the coon for a big loop and headed into a pine thicket, and treed. When I drove around to another road, Merle was 90 yards in. I made my way to him and found him on a huge Hickory tree in the pines. I could shine the tree anywhere. I searched it best I could but could see him. I know he had him by the way he was treeing, so I pet him up good and headed home.

The changes I am seeing in Blueduck have been unreal. Back in June, I started noticing , when a track breaks down, he stared circling out to pick it up again. He is really learning how to work a bad track, and when he trees, he has a coon. I have seen 9 coons in the last 10 trees he made, alone. Friday night, Donald and I made 4 trees and looked at all four. Emmy Lou, and Merle each, treed one alone. BlueDuck tree two. The last drop for Blueduck, really got me excited. I sent him in next to a beaver pond. He went in about 50 yards, doubled back and crossed the road. I called him in and sent him back the way I want him to go, only to have him do the same thing again. This time I let him go where he wanted too. He went through the woods to the south and crossed a powerline, before striking a cold bad track. After working it a few minutes, he got it lined out, and started moving it south-east, toward the river, then treed. We made our way to him and found him on a maple tree in the edge of a slough. It didn’t take long to find this coon. From where I turned him out, to the tree as a crow fly’s, was around 900 yards.

No longer a puppy.

Last night Rhett and I took Case and Blueduck for a short hunt in Gumswamp. It was hot, very hot 85 when we got back. We sent both dogs in next to the beaver pond on the end of the still bridge road. They struck pretty fast and move deep, parallel with the road. Blueduck located first at 450 yards, and a minute later, Case located near 500 yards. We drove around and found Case treed on a nice Pin Oak, and Blueduck 50 yards away on a Sweet Gum. We couldn't fine either coon, so we moved on down the road and cut them again. This time we sent them up an old logging road. They struck 10 yards off the road under some muscadine vines next to the road. It was a hot track, but they were really having trouble getting it straight. Blueduck treed on an Ironwood, that was just covered with muscadine vines and Case treed 30 yards away on a small Oak next to the wood line, which was covered also. We couldn’t shine either tree, so needless to say, we did see a coon. I really got over heated at the last tree from fighting all the briars and vines. Only 25 yards from the road, I was begaining to worry about getting out of that thicket. Got me scared. And to add insult to injury, I got into something that set my eyes on fire. My eyes were so bad, I had to stop and let Rhett drive me home. On my last post I said I saw 9 coons in the last 10 trees that Blueduck made. Well it’s 9 out of 12 now. I guess I talked too fast. But I was well pleased with him last night for splitting and staying put that close to another dogs treed. He is no longer a puupy, Blueduck is becoming a coondog.

Friday, I loaded up Blueduck and headed to Ringgold, La to the state championship. It was 100 degs when I was driving up I-49, so I let Blueduck got to ride up front with me. I had rented a cabin on Grand Bayou Reservoir about 20 miles south of Ringgold. After getting checked in to the cabin, I headed up to the hunt. They draw out cast at 8:30 and we headed to the woods. We hunted some beautiful woods, big open hard woods with slough running all through it. The coons were not moving and we ended up with a dead cast. Blueduck had treed on two hollow trees and ended up with 450 circle and no minus. The second time we cut loose, Blueduck worked a cold track about 800 yards before treeing. Saturday night ended up with a dead cast also. We made a few trees, but never ran a track. I was very pleased with Blueduck’s performance, but I know he has more work to do. I think I’ll hold him out of the hunts till after the first of the year or till he make 2 in March.

Took Blueduck, Merle, and Clara for a short hunt last night. We cut Blueduck first, and he treed in about 5 minutes after he hit the ground. The above pictures are what the results were. Next we we cut Merle and Clara. Our short hunt just turned in to a long hunt. They got treed close to 3/4 of a mile in. Thank goodness we could ride and get closer. When we got out the ranger they were 850 yards. We couldn't get this one to look. Really made for a long night.
