I do not sell pups so I am not sure what you are talking about. I had one live to, fourteen and I have one now that's eleven. I have never had one die young like you say below other than killed by game or while hunting. Outcrosses have far more health problems. You have made a very good point and that is breeding to young which I do not do. You also made another great point great dogs come from dominant genes and dominant genes are more likely to pass to there offspring when they are related. If you do get dominant genes from an outcross chances are they will not pass to there offspring. I am not saying my way is the only way to breed just it's the way I breed.
Bottom line results.

You may have exactly what you need...if all your pups are identical you have a new pup to replace the ones that consistently die from 3-6 yrs of age....but if people pay you for your superior, perfect hounds...they probably would like them to live past the age of 4...cause they don't have a pen full of perfect angled dogs like you do...they have to buy another one from you.

By the way...them are some great looking pups....can't deny that!

I very seldom get involved in any of these discussions but I think you are stating some false things and saying your way is the only way and that we all should be buying our hounds from one breeder...we.could never create what we want on our own or hell...we may even want something better than what you have. But that can't be! ......

GREAT DOGS COME FROM GREAT MALES AND FEMALES WITH DOMINANT GENES FOR THE TRAITS WE DESIRE IN OUR DOGS! BOTTOM LINE!

I will always cross my females on dogs that have something my female lacks.....if the pups don't pick up the good from both or at least the majority of the pups have what I want...it was the wrong dog to breed too! Find the dog with the dominant gene you want and he will put it in your pups...but make sure you can live with the faults he will put in them too!

lighten up on him fellas. this fellow may just be a good ole country boy that realy likes what he has. no need in running another blue dog hunter off because someone don't agree with him. I would personally like to go check these dogs out if all possible and see just how good they are on the kitties. if they can drive a kittie and get treed they can sure drive a coon is my thought.

have a great day

I had an Airedale and some Airedale crosses that could tree bobcat regular , they were geared for it ... but they weren't even close to being good on coon if they had to do any kind of trailing or work for one .

Bobcat are fun to tree ... but I don't take it to mean the same dog would be as good on coon ... it's take alot more nose , brains and patience ... oh , that's why curs do better on bobcat , lol.

I do enjoy a different viewpoint and the idea that crossing holds us back as opposed to intense inbreeding is interesting.

Maybe I missed it again, What TOP BLOODLINES started with your dogs? We have been raising our line for over 50 yrs and have seen several lines come and go. We are pretty familiar with different bloodlines and their contribution to the Bluetick Breed..........Tim

I am the first to admit I am never satisfied and continually want to improve. I have carried several top females to studs outside the bloodline that I have promoted.

I could give a rats a** about being part of a team, crew, clan or clique. I GET MORE PLEASURE BEATING ANOTHER BLUEDOG than a holstein. I have enjoyed making some lifetime friends resulting from like minded folks that share the same goal. (which is producing a hound that can win).

In reality no one has it figured out, all you can do is mate a male and a female that demonstrate the type of hound you desire. There are individuals from every strain that have more of a tendency to pass a genetically fixxed trait to offspring than others though.

In my opinion folks need to not worry so much about what others are accomplishing and go out and achieve your own personal goal.

Accationally there's that one pup that everyone would love to own. You can start it easily and it progressess rapidly. No matter what line we are talking about you will run on to that pup sometime or the other. You love the way it does this or that, but it needs a little something stronger than other things. That's where a good trainer will start tweeking, others allow it to continue as is. If a blue dog wins it will be one that got serious attention on it's weaker points. Any dog will cheat every now and then. If you want one that will win it's going to be the cheater. It's not going to be that dog that doesn't have a brain enough to sneak one in now and then.

Breeders know alot about how pups should turn out breeding to this or that. Every line has their weak points and their strong points. I believe 408 thinks he has something or he wouldn't be hunting bobcats! I had just as soon run a dang deer as a bobcat, but if you have the room it would be a blast!

No matter what you use your dogs for, if you have one that is seriously good it always is the same dogs that other people use to chase what ever they are being seriously good at! A good dog is a good dog.

Re: My Take

Roger, one of things that some take for granted is before the hunt is food. If the hunt is out of town it's best to get there a few days early and keep them cool and relaxed during the day. Take water from your home and cut back on there food before the hunt and just feed them seven ounces of food and several egg whites from three days before to the hunt. On the day of the hunt only cooked egg whites four hours before the hunt and nothing else. One of the walker boys who I help with his breeding program has been winning big using this method.

If outbreeding, would you want to cross "Susie with Chico or Macho Camacho?

Bluetick people need to understand, and I said this before and got barked at, but those people in other breeds either take their top hounds to someone that knows how to finish a dog or if there going to finish them out theirselves needs to have them hounds in the woods 6-7 nights a week and take no bull from them. If those dogs aren't disaplend continually then their getting away with something. That's what a pro trainer know's and I guarentee you those from the other breeds that are training for the world know this and take advantage of it. It's not good enough if you hunt 7 nights a week if you don't control that dog's mental state.

Sorry I got off of the original question. Everyone on here has something we can gain that one little bit of knowledge from.

hang in there 408 don't let them get you down I enjoy watching everyone scrap on here lol don't know if you got a dog worth a dang but you are great at argue . one thing I was wondering I had a cat hunter just the other day tell me you wanted a cat hound real light on tree or they would be slick all the time because the cats bounce off trees a lot. how can this be a one bark tree dog. he said the best cat dogs in his area were half july hound.

I don't know nothing about texas but up here in northern mi if your gonna hunt cat you can not have a tree happy idiot huge nasty thick swamps with tons of blowdowns most guys that come hunt with me up here olny do it once LOL when a dog trees 300 yards in and it takes an hour to get to him you know its thick

but as for the original question I hunt all hammer and jet breed dogs and their strongest points are tree power winding (I rig hunt a lot)and speed could use a little colder nose where I live not very many coon

Re: Re: My Take

I got one problem here with this. I'm afraid my dogs would get awful hungry because I couldn't keep from eating those eggs myself!!HA We use to haul Smokey River Lil to a few hunts and on the 3 day hunts we were always scared she would get into a bind because you couldn't make her eat anything the whole 3 days. I mean nothing, and we tried eggs. It was just one of those crazy things but she sure worried us. And she never ran out of gas.

Re: 408

Sir, some of what your friend told you is true. My family for many years ran fox hounds mixed with July hounds that we used for bobcats and they were real good as a team an of course a team can always beat an individual.
We would hunt on horses and the game was which one of us was there, first on horseback, so the longer and faster the race the better we like it.

The bluetick hounds I have now are not light on the tree and will not leave until I get there. They come on with so much pressure and come on so strong they will not dare to leave the tree. If they do leave there caught on the ground.

If a cat thinks the dogs can see them .. they won't jump but if the dogs hug the tree and the cat can sneak out on a limb like he's stealing a base in baseball ... he's gone !

If a cat catches his breath and jumps .. he will grab a gear no hound has and smoke them ... it's not fun for hunter or dog to have one bail like that .

Coming on so strong they dare not leave the tree ... haha .. that's a little bit of salesmanship right there .... it's kinda funny , kinda silly ... but for sure not relative to cat hunting.
