You will find nearly all water race people to be far more willing to help a newby than You ever have seen before at the hunts or even the shows.
My advice is to find a friendly looking person that seems to know what they're doing and just politely introduce Yourself to them and ask if they have time to help You .
As far as basic's please go to page 3 of this thread and read the last post it's from Me to Crotankid but it should help You too.I wish You luck, have fun ,and please tell Us how it went. CYa

NOT GOOD

Neither dog would jump in after the stuffed coon. They both barked from a distance but up close wouldn't have anything to do with it. I guess I will play with them some in the pond in front of the house to get them use to it.

I've also got a GRWCH GRFCH GRCh English female,a WCH Ch English female, and a pr male and female English that are REAL tough. My male broke his leg last Oct.with the pins and rods holding it together I'd says his racing is pretty much over. He's back to back reigning Alabama State water race CH.

There's a REAL REAL fast daughter of his in Mo."Zues' Itty Bitty"watch for her.

Hi ! I'm sure Yuo've heard the expression "You gotta learn to lose before You can learn to win". There really is something to that.Loseing is a part of this sport ,and to do it well We must keep Our chin up,shake hands and congrat. the winner, and try Our best to learn from any mistakes We may have made.
I am very proud of You for not just giveing up,You realize Your dogs need more work and thats what You intend to do,BRAVO!
Here's a little advice for You. Any time Your useing a lure (stuffed coon, hide,or anything other than a real coon) do not let the dog get near enough to realize it's not real.Since You were in actual competition You were most likely up against experienced water race dogs.Believe it or not many of those would have swam across and treed even if the cage was empty!!!What You need to do is get a lure as much like the one They use where You'll be competeing and put it in a cage with a real coon. Work Your dogs on this combo.,after they become real agressive, try not haveing the real coon in there, but don't let them get close enough to realize the real coon is missing. Hope this works for You. CYa

Jonathan

Just swim him. He'll get the hang of it.Last water race I went to the pond was low and a GRWCH female I know is a SUPER nice dog wouldn't jump.Would you jump in knee deep water off the house? lol Not me.

Stonehill "Briar" was bred by me,give him a chance.Hey this dog power has got at least 3 generations all grand behind them, the pr's have 5.

I threw both in and they do swim really well. When out hunting a coon will not get away by crossing a pond, deep river or swamp. The problem is like you said Stonehill they got the cage to close for my dogs cause both of them will try and tare the wire off a cage to get a coon. Alan when I threw Briar in they said man that dog is fast in the water. They had a money hunt later and I should have stayed and took their money but the wife and kids went along for the water race. I really wish we could use a real coon here in GA for the races. Well the way I see it is the club raised a lil money off me yesterday and we all had a good time. Til next time

My son

Has a WCH Ch female that will not run the field trials using the scent drags. She's lightnin fast if we use a road kill coon.Like stonehill said, she'll swim after an empty cage. She was trained by John with his kayak and a cage coon, she'll jump from where ever you put her.

Rosie and I will be ready to jump back into the game next month.
Anyone have any pics of the pond at Millstadt, IL or can tell me about it......and decent motels in the area?

Thanks, Glen. Bummer, Rosie would never stay in a pond that narrow without fencing. Makes it tough deciding whether to take her to IL that weekend or Troy. How about you? Will you be going to either of those water races?

LOL....And Troy will be cooler?? I'm used to hot. 100-115 is normal summer weather for me. I just can't get used to this dang humidity crap -- it totally wrecks my enjoyment of nice warm summer weather!!
I haven't been to IL yet, and I like seeing new country and new people, but I sure like going to Troy too since that 3 hr drive puts it in "my backyard" and means that Tiny will most likely be able to come along.
My dilemma -- Rosie's pretty close to being a FCh, but she'll be out of shape since being in a small kennel while she was in heat. In IL at least she can make a halfway attempt in the FT, even if she'd never stay in their pond. (But I sure hate "teaching" them to run the bank in a WR!) At Troy I'm sure she'll be too out of shape to have a shot at line or tree in the heat race, but at least I know she'll stay in the pond. LOL Too bad Troy doesn't do FTs too. That would solve my problem!
I'll either flip a coin or make Tiny decide.

Cole Camp doesn't have an event the first weekend in Aug, do they?
