Thanks Tom and Perry. Tom, congrats to you as well!!
I called a tom in right off of the roost. I had never seen this before, he flew down when it was still pretty dark and strutted and gobbled for a bit, must've realized it was still early so he flew back into a tree then he finally flew all the way into my set up. His gobble wasn't very powerful, and he had about a 6-7" beard, so I kept calling to the gobbler who sounded like he had his head in an oil drum. He came in with another gobbler, first gobbler bolted. This tom was a big un, the one I was after. I had him cruising by, and wasn't sure if he was going to slow down to come closer. I guessed him at 40-45 yds so I pulled the trigger and rolled him. Started collecting my things, and he got his feet under him and started running. Blasted him again, rolled him again. Same result, kept going. Got on my feet and chased after him. Dropped him again right before he got to the woods. He disappeared into the woods, and I followed about 20 yds of feathers. Probably should've aimed a touch higher given the distance. I left that spot, went and got more shells, tried a different spot for an hour or so with no luck. Gave the landowner a call to tell him my "almost" story and he told me there was a gobbler back down where I had been sitting. I couldn't believe it. Despite it being 11, and I worked at 5pm, I gave it a whirl. Snuck in, started calling only to hear the gobblers going over the hill the other way. Then I heard a spit drum right behind me. He came out, and stayed out of range. He had probably been recently educated. All of a sudden the gobbles were back in hearing range. Called them in in a quick hurry... 3 of them were directly behind me blasting my ear drums. As they started leaving, I spun around left handed and was able to get the bead on the biggest head of the 3 long beards. Was a great hunt, but a brutal night at work.
