HUNT

I hunted by myself last night. I got a late start but decided to make a couple of drops anyway. It was good and cold and the full moon was shining bright. Coons were not moving very well. First drop I cut Goose and Flip loose in a bottom. Goose went straight in the bottom about 250 yds and hit Rocky Ford Creek and hung a right down the creek. Flip went to the left into a section of water oak hardwoods. Flip hunted out about 150yds by himself and came back around to the truck. Goose was over 800 yds down the bottom so I loaded Flip in the box and moved down a field road. Goose had cut across the creek and was headed into the hills. I drove around and came in on the backside of the bottom and Goose was opening here and there. I heard him locate and load up treed. I made my way about 400yds to him and he was up a large oak tree with a nest. There was a large poplar tree joining the oak at the top that still had a lot of leaves. I couldn't find his coon and we made our way back to the truck. Next drop I cut Cotton and Snow. Snow is a pup out of Bocephus and a gyp that is out of Big Time Albert and Cotton's Sister. Cotton left hard and Snow went hunting with her. Cotton hit a small branch and turned left up into the hills. Cotton got deep and I heard her let out a huge locate and just load up treed. She was 7/10's of a mile. I was able to move around up an old gravel road and get within 300 yds or so of Cotton. I made my way to her and she was up a big water oak that had a nest in it as well. I started squalling and jerking on a vine and finally got a glimpse of an eye. I hit it with the bright light and could see a coon in the nest. I had my pup with me so I decided to roll him out. I hit him the first shot and he came out of the nest and another large coon shot out and went up the tree. The smaller coon I shot fell out and Cotton made short work of him. Snow mouthed on the coon some but is still somewhat immature. She is a large houndy gyp with a monster mouth so time will tell what she can accomplish. I had Flip in the truck so I loaded up Cotton and Snow and took the coon and my dog leash and laid a drag about 250 yds down a hollow and across the creek. I rubbed the coon up and down a large tree and carried the coon back and put it in the tool box. I got ole Flip and cut him loose. It took him a few minutes to get the track lined out and going the right way but he soon had it going. I heard him locate and tree so I made my way to him. He came off the tree about the time I could see him so I just sat on a log and waited on him to make his mind up. He loaded back up and treed really good. I petted him up and headed to the truck and called it a night. Y'all Keep'em Lookin' Up!

Hunt

Keith I hope y’all had a great one!!

I went over to my friend Terry Tibbs in Steele ,AL to hunt Friday night. First drop we cut a 10 month old male out of Cotton alone on a deer feeder. Otto is his name and he struck at about 100 yds and ran a short track and treed. I found his coon and we rolled it out to him. Next drop I cut Cotton and a littermate sister to Otto loose. They ran a long track and ended up on the Coosa River. We caught them up and cut Cotton and Otto together. Cotton struck at 350 yds and trailed about 200 more and loaded up. I found her coon and Otto ended up coming back in to the tree. We rolled it out and held him back. Otto has the makings of a real hound. I left Flip with Terry and brought his sister home with me. We are going to swap for a few weeks and see if I can tighten her up. We had to call it early as storms were moving in on us. Gone hit it Monday night. Y’all keep’em lookin up

HUNT

I hunted for awhile last night. Drake went with me. He has been sitting on the sidelines lol. First drop we cut Cotton and Rogue. Rogue is a pup out of Cotton and is a sister to my Flip puppy. Terry has Flip and is hunting him in the coon pen for me. Rogue went left and Cotton went right down a big hardwood hollow. Rogue struck and started a track. Cotton soon struck in and headed across the hollow and up a ridge. Rogue started locating and we waited for her to settle but she kept trying to trail. I finally headed in to see what she was doing. She loaded up on a tree but came down and started trying to trail away. I watched her and she finally committed to the tree and I leashed her up. She didn't have a coon. I pulled her off and Cotton was blowing the top out about 450 yds across the hollow. We got the her tree and I spotted her coon as we were walking up to the tree. I gave her a pet on the side and we walked down the next hollow and cut both dogs again. Rogue struck almost immediately and Cotton opened soon after. Cotton went about 175 yds up on the side of the hill and loaded up treed. Rogue went to her and treed pretty good on the tree. Cotton had 2 coons up the tree and we petted up the dogs and started to the truck. Rogue was acting crazy on the dog leash and we saw another coon sitting up as we were heading to the truck. Next drop we cut Goose and Vapor down a large hardwood hollow with a small creek at the bottom. Vapor struckin at about 150 yds and started a track. He located on a tree but moved on down the branch. Goose soon opened down the branch and almost immediately loaded up treed. Vapor was up on the side of the ridge trailing. We headed to Goose and he was up a huge poplar tree. About the time we got to his tree Vapor located and went on a tree. I headed up the ridge to him. He was about 75 yds up the ridge. I got almost to him and he came off his tree and started milling. I waited on him and he went back and loaded up. I leashed him up and went back to look Goose's tree. I didn't see his coon and I think he missed him and I saw a coon about 2 trees over. He has been very accurate so far but I think he just missed this one. I headed up the hill to Vapor and he had 2 coons up his tree. I decided to roll one out to him as he had split from Goose with the meat. He still is a little unsure of himself but I see a lot of potential and he seems to be naturally independent. With a little more woods time with Goose or Cotton, I will single him out and put more pressure on him. We decided to cut Cotton and Rogue again. We sent them down another hollow and Cotton went left down the hollow and Rogue went straight up a small draw that feeds into the main hollow. Rogue struck red hot and was really moving a track. I check the Garmin and Cotton was still headed up the hollow at 500 yds so we moved around a logging road and got closer to Rogue. She was locating around but wouldn't stick the tree. I walked in and watched her for awhile and finally caught her up as she was about to get onto a hunting club land. I could hear Cotton treed when I loaded Rogue in the truck. She was 875yds. We drove back around and walked about 400 yds to her. She was up a red oak that had a large nest at the top. I squalled and looked for a bit but couldn't get anything to look. Drake was tired so we called it a night. Coons were moving and I enjoyed the cold night and some good and not so good dog work!! Beats sitting on the couch anytime!! Y'all Keep'em Lookin' Up!!

GrNtChGrCh PR Southern Blue Moonshine

Memories from the past!!!

Ole Shine is the measuring stick for every hound I will ever own. Wish I had him at 16months old standing in my kennel. He was the best I've ever owned and he was also my buddy. I miss the him.

SHINE

I WALKED BEHIND HIM A FEW TIMES. I SURE DO MISS HIM ,FROSTY AND OLE' BRITTANY. THEY SURE COULD BRING THE WORLD TO LIFE WITH THEM LOUD MOUTHS. THE THING THAT STANDS OUT ABOUT OLE' SHINE IS THAT HE WAS A COON DOG ANYWHERE YOU TURNED HIM LOOSE AND DIDN'T HAVE TO PUT A LEED ON HIM. I HOPE THAT SOME OF THE ONES IN YOUR KENNEL WILL ONE DAY BE JUST AS GOOD,BUT THEY GOT A HARD ROAD TO HOLD TO EVER MEASURE UP TO HIM.

HUNT

I hunted by myself last night for a little while. I got a late start and I think coons moved early. First drop I cut Cotton and Vapor loose in a swamp bottom. Vapor struck in at about 150 yds and was opening every once in awhile. Cotton soon opened to the left and started a track but it sure didn't sound too good. She moved it on out and soon located and treed about 350yds up the bottom. I made my way to her and she was up a big bay tree with a lot of smaller bay trees growing around it. I looked for a while but the coon could have been anywhere and I couldn't have seen him. Vapor was in the bottom and had gotten into some water. He located a few trees but didn't settle and I finally caught him up. Next drop I cut Goose and Rogue loose in a hardwood hollow. Rogue struck in at about 200yds straight down the hollow and Goose soon opened right down a small creek. Goose opened a few more times and skipped out and fell treed. I started to him and Rogue was up on ridge trailing around. Goose was up a big Hickory tree with a large nest at the top. I couldn't find his coon but I am confident he was in the nest. Rogue came in and treed pretty good on the tree after I got there. I cut them off that tree on down the hollow and rogue struck in at about 150 yds with Goose soon opening down on the creek. Goose ended up about 375yds and loaded up treed. I got to him and he was on a large den tree. Rogue located and treed to the right and I made my way to her. She got down and was milling some so we had us a short lesson. She didn't have a coon and I leashed her up and made my way to the truck. I moved on down the gravel road and cut Cotton and Vapor into the same section of hardwoods. Vapor struck in at 250yds on a ridge to the right and Cotton opened a minute later to the left down a big hollow. Vapor worked his track up and along the ridge and Cotton was headed up the side of a big hill. Cotton loaded up treed at 590yds and I started my way up the hill to her. She was treed on the side of a pipeline up a large den tree. I leashed her up and could hear Vapor opening sporadically up on the ridge. I got to where I could see him and he was really trying hard to get the track finished. He was checking a lot of trees but the track was cold and he was struggling. I caught him up and called it a night. It was 20 degrees on the thermometer in my shop when I got home. I'm sure glad to see some cold , frosty nights. I'm going to stay on these pups and will have to cull out soon. Y'all Keep'em Lookin' Up!!

HUNT

I hunted by myself last night for a little while. The wind was blowing and it was spitting rain all night long. First drop I cut Cotton and Vapor loose down a big hardwood hollow. Cotton went down the hollow and struck in at about 250 yds. I heard Vapor in the next hollow get struck in as well. Vapor is very independent and wants to do his own thing. I walked and tried to stay within hearing of both dogs but Cotton was really covering ground. She left the hardwoods and hit a hunting club that is mostly pine trees. I kept walking and she soon hit a big cutover. Cotton finally treed but didn't sound right at all. I waded through the cutover to her and she was treed in an underground spring. I gathered her up and headed to the truck. I loaded her up and checked the Garmin and Vapor was showing lost communication at 850yds. I started walking towards the last communication location and finally picked him back up. I could hear him treed at 500yds. I had to go thru some rough stuff but finally got to him. He was treed on a small creek up a huge den tree. There were wild plum trees and privot hedge everywhere. I got to a few places I could see the tree but it was almost impossible to look it. I sure would liked to have knocked the coon out to him as he had been treed for a while. I made my way out of there and started the long walk to the truck. I got to the truck at 10:00 pm. I pulled down the logging road and cut Goose and Rogue up a hardwood hollow. Rogue went right and struck a track but she was struggling to move it out. I heard Goose strike in at about 300yds to the left. I watched Rogue checking trees but she just couldn't figure it out. Goose soon started locating but never would turn it over so I caught Rogue up and drove around to see what was going on with him. Goose had trailed to a rock bluff where there was a spring coming out of the bluff. The coon had gone into the bluff and Goose was trying to figure out how to get around the bluff. I was getting late and raining harder so I caught him up and ended a sorry night of hunting. Sure makes you appreciate the good ones lol. Y'all Keep'em Lookin' Up!!

HUNT

I didn't get to hunt this weekend. My wife, daughter, and I made the trip to Atlanta to watch Alabama take on Georgia in the SEC championship game. We had a good time even though it was a stressful first half!! Looking forward to hitting the woods again tonight and see if I can get one on a limb. Roll Tide !!! and Y'all Keep'em Lookin' Up!!

HUNT

I hunted by myself last night. First drop I cut Cotton and Vapor loose in a swamp bottom. Vapor struck in at about 150 yds and Cotton opened to his left. Cotton worked a short track and loaded up treed. She was treed up a tree with a bunch of dead moss hanging all over it and I could not find a coon. He definitely could have been there but he would have had to looked at me to see him. I cut her on down the bottom as Vapor was still opening on in the bottom. Cotton turned left and went across the bottom and just fell treed at about 350 yds. I got to her and I finally found her coon after about 10 minutes of looking. The coon never would look at me. Vapor kept locating but wouldn't stick a tree. I walked in to him and he was locating on a big den tree but would hit it a few barks and get back down. I caught him up and headed to the truck. Next drop I cut Goose and Rogue loose in the same bottom up about a mile. Rogue struck in and started a track. I had not heard Goose but looked at the Garmin and he was 300 yds up the bottom. I soon heard him open a couple times headed up a ditch that is a drain from a fish pond. I pulled around up to the pond and there is a patch of water oaks beside the pond. Goose was treed on a large water oak. I couldn't find his coon but there were still a lot of leaves on the tree. Rogue came into the tree and I leashed her up and headed to the truck. I moved around and cut Goose and Rogue again down a hardwood hollow. Rogue struck and started a track and I soon heard Goose open headed over a ridge. They were headed towards a gravel road and I drove around. They had crossed and I soon heard Goose load up on the creek in the next hollow. I got to them and they were up a huge den tree. I looked but didn't see him on the outside. I moved around and cut Rogue alone on a feeder that I filled up for the pups. She went in and loaded up right at the feeder and had 2 small coons up one tree. I petted her up good and headed out. As I was headed out in the truck a coon crossed the road. I stopped and cut Vapor loose and he struck immediately. He ran about 125 yds and loaded up treed. He did a good job and I rolled the coon out to him. I called it a night and got a Christmas party tonight. Y'all Keep'em Lookin' up!!

HUNT

I hunted by myself last night. I got off work late and had to clean kennels , so I ended up getting a late start. First drop I cut Goose and Vapor across a hardwood flat that leads to some nice hills and hollows. Vapor is going to be a dead loner and doesn't care what another dog is doing. Goose headed out across the flat and hit a hollow. Vapor went left and crossed a logging road and hit another hollow and turned down the hollow and soon struck but wasn't opening much. Goose circled and started back towards me but opened about 3 times and loaded up treed. I went to him and he was up a large water oak tree and had a nice coon treed. I shot the coon out to him and he dispatched him pretty quick. I made my way to the truck and Vapor was about 400 yds down the hollow and was struggling with the track. I waited on him awhile and finally walked in and caught him up. Next drop I cut Cotton, Vapor and Rogue down another hollow. Rogue struck quick followed by Cotton. Of course Vapor went left down the hollow by himself. He soon opened about 200 yds down that hollow. I walked up on the ridge so I could hear both dogs and sat on a log. Vapor wasn't opening much but he was moving on down a small creek that runs thru that hollow. I soon heard him load up treed at about 475 yds. I headed to him and he had crossed out of the hardwood into a mix of pinetrees and briars. I worked my way to him and he was treed up a pinetree. I looked and finally thought I saw an eye up in the top. I crossed over and walked up on the ridge and finally found a tail hanging down. I shot it out to Vapor and he finished him off. I petted him up really good and was proud of him for getting alone with the meat. I got back to the truck and snapped a couple pics and loaded Vapor in the truck. Cotton was still working a bad track and I could hear Rogue opening here and there. I drove around a logging road and got closer to Cotton. Rogue was coming up the road so I loaded her up and Cotton was treed 200yds up on a ridge. Cotton was treed up a large pine tree and I could not get it to look. I was close to 12:00 and 5 am comes early so I called it at night. Going to hit it again tonight. Y'all Keep'em Lookin' Up!!

HUNT

I hunted for a while last night. My son Drake went with me. We took Cotton, Goose, Belle and Rogue. First drop we cut Cotton and Rogue loose in the swamp bottom. Rogue struck in at about 150 yds followed immediately by Cotton. They were on a good track and both dogs hit up almost simultaneously. Cotton blew the top out and Rogue treed well for a few minutes but soon got off the tree and started milling. I found the coon pretty quick and brought Rogue back in to the tree and worked with her for a while. We moved up the bottom and cut Cotton, rogue and Belle. Rogue struck in to the right and Cotton to the left. This track wasn't great but Cotton was moving it out good. They ended up in a lot of water and Cotton was the only dog opening. She finally got the coon out of the water and headed across a cow pasture. Rogue started opening again and Belle opened here and there. Belle located but didn't stick a tree and moved on up the pasture. Cotton crossed the road and headed up into some hardwood hills and Rogue went to the left up a ditch. Cotton loaded up treed up a large water oak. She had a coon and Belle ended up coming in to the tree. Rogue had gotten deep and was just bumping around so I moved up the hollow and cut Goose alone. He left hard and headed up the hollow into some good timber. He got deep and we drove around a gravel road to get closer. He was bumping around in some hardwood next to an old house place. I soon heard him locate and load up treed. He was treed up a large red oak next to an old barn. Rogue heard him and came into his tree. I leashed her back and Goose had 2 up this tree. I shot one out to him and teased Rogue with it. We called it a night and I have my company Christmas party tonight so I wont get to hunt. I may hit a UKC hunt Saturday night. It is supposed to be raining cats and dogs here all weekend. Y'all Keep'em Lookin' Up!!

HUNTING

I am looking forward to a hot cup of coffee and the sound of ole blue tonight. I had planned to hit a hunt Saturday night but it was pouring rain and the wind was blowing really hard so I backed out. It was a pretty good drive to go hunt in those conditions. I had to drive in the Christmas parade last night so I am itching to hit the woods tonight. Chad Bobo came over from Arkansas and picked up the Nails pup that Drake had been hunting. Drake isn't hunting and Nails had too much potential to stand in the pen. I bred Floyd to my Jewel female out of Tucker's Blue Boomer Saturday and I hope to have a litter on the ground soon. Y'all Keep'em Lookin' Up!!!

HUNT

I hunted last night by myself. First drop I cut Goose and Rogue loose in a swamp bottom. Rogue struck and started a good track. Goose soon opened a little deeper and Rogue headed his way. Both dogs blew up on a tree about the same time. Rogue treed a few minutes but was off the tree when I arrived. I found the coon pretty quick and went to get Rogue. I got after her a little bit and led her back to the tree. She treed pretty good on it. I petted ole Goose on the head and we made our way to the truck. Next drop I cut Cotton and Vapor in another bottom. Cotton struck in quick and Vapor opened to the right of her. Cotton worked a short track and soon treed. She was up a huge oak tree that still had a lot of leaves on it. I couldn't find her coon and sent her on in the bottom. Vapor was still opening but didn't seem to be on a good track. Cotton took a hard left and eventually just fell treed. Vapor went to her but didn't tree with her. I looked for a long time and finally found her coon. I leashed Vapor back where he was off the tree and shot the coon out to Cotton. He sure was upset he didn't get in on the action!! Next drop I cut Goose and Rogue in a hardwood hollow. Rogue struck in at about 200 yds and Goose opened at about 275. Goose drifted out to about 500 yds and loaded up treed. I drove around and got to within 175 yds and headed to the tree. Goose was on a big den tree. Rogue came in to the tree and I leashed her up and called it a night. Y'all Keep'em Lookin' Up!!

HUNT

I hunted by myself last night. I started raining pretty good as I pulled up to my hunting spot. I cut Vapor and Cotton loose in a swamp bottom. Vapor left hard and went left and Cotton headed straight in the bottom. Vapor soon struck in at 350 yds and was opening here and there. I checked the Garmin and Cotton was 875yds down the bottom. It was really raining hard so I pulled around to an old road and got within 250yds of Cotton. She was treed and I headed to her. She was treed up a large water oak. I looked as best as I could but it was raining hard and it was almost impossible to look up the tree. I back out into a cutover and tried looking some but finally leashed her up and headed to the truck. I moved back around and pulled around the field towards Vapor. He was 950yds up the bottom and I could hear him locating but wouldn't stick. I finally walked in to him and it had slacked up raining. He was checking trees but wasn't sure. I spotted a coon sitting up in the area but he just couldn't figure it out. I'm sure the track was rained out for the most part. I really like this pup so far. He just turned a year old and he will leave in a dead run and will be alone most of the time. He has treed a few coons and with some experience I think he is going to be nice. I moved around to a new spot and it started pouring rain again. I cut Goose and Rogue loose down a hardwood hollow. Rogue really didn't know what to think about the rain. Goose left hard and Rogue sort of trotted off to the left. She circled around and came out on a logging road and ran up it for about 400yds before coming back to the truck. I loaded her up and Goose was 500yds across the hollow. I pulled within 200yds of him to hear as it was raining hard again. I could hear him treed and I made my way to him. The rain had slacked off and I looked his tree but I couldn't find his coon. I think he missed him. I saw a coon a few trees over and Goose was really winding as I pulled him off the tree. I called it a night as the rain started up again. Y'all Keep'em Lookin' Up!!

HUNT

I hunted Friday night in a UKC hunt. I hunted Cotton and got a NtCh win on her. I drew a blue gyp and a walker male and Cotton looked good. I scored 375 plus on 2 coons. She needs 1 more to finish to Dual Grand. I will try to get that win before I breed her to Floyd. I am looking forward to entering Goose in few hunts soon and see what we can get done. It was pouring rain most of the night Friday night but ole Cotton just did her thing. First tree was a large bay tree with leaves and all 3 dogs treed on it but it was circle. Next drop Cotton had 1st and 1st with blue gyp 2nd and 2nd. Walker male came in but didn't tree. She was on a den but 2 coons were visible in a crack in the tree. Walker withdrew and last drop Cotton had 2nd strike. Blue gyp treed but moved and then treed again awhile later. Cotton checked tree but moved on and soon split treed. We started to blue gyp and she moved and went to Cotton. Cotton had the meat and sealed the deal.

I hunted last night for a while as well. First drop I cut Vapor about 100yds from a feeder by himself. He left hard and went left away from the feeder. He struck in at about 230yds and started working a track back towards the feeder. He got within 30yds of the feeder and loaded up treed. He came off the tree for a second as I approached but loaded back up. He had a coon and I gave him a good workover at the tree. Next drop I cut rogue alone down a logging road leading to another feeder. She went 100yds and opened to the left of the feeder. She struggled to move the track in a lot of water. She soon came out and I caught her up. Next drop I moved to a small creek running thru some hardwood hills and cut Cotton and Goose. Cotton went up the creek but Goose headed right up the hill. Cotton struck in at about 150 yds and soon loaded up treed. Goose came in and backed her which is very unusual for him. Cotton had a coon up some privot hedges that still had some berries visible. I petted her up and decided to move. I went to a swamp bottom that I had not hunted in a while due to a lot of hunting pressure. It did not look like anyone had been hunting it as much as when I quit hunting there. I cut Goose and Cotton again. I eased into the bottom and discovered why no one had been hunting it much and the entire bottom was covered in water from ankle deep to knee deep. There were some drier spots on in bottom. Goose went left and cotton shot straight in the bottom. Cotton soon opened and started a track. I heard Goose open deep to the left and he was on the creek. Both dogs got there track up and going. Goose was opening here and there but was moving. He loaded up treed at about 490yds and I started to him. About halfway to him I heard Cotton load up and tree as well. I got to Goose and he was on a large tree across the creek. He had a large coon and I rolled it out to him. I petted him up and we headed to Cotton. I leashed Goose up about 20yds from Cottons tree and headed on in to her. She was in a privot hedge thicket and it was rough going. I got to her and I think she just missed the coon. There were those berries all over the ground and a lot of coon crap so they have been feeding in there but I couldn't find him. I made my way to Goose and we headed to the truck and called it a night. I have had Strep throat and hunting Thursday and Friday in the rain sure didn't help my cause. I got a couple shots yesterday and gone keep on trucking!! Y'all Keep'em Lookin' UP!!
