HUNT
I hunted by myself Saturday night. I took Goose and Cotton as well as two pups , FLIP and Vapor. First drop I cut Goose and Flip loose in a swamp bottom. Goose left hard and soon was 700 yds down the bottom. Flip came out and I sent him in another direction. He opened and started a track. He worked his way across the bottom and Goose was almost a mile. I heard Goose locate and load up treed. I was able to drive within 300 yds of him and headed to his tree. Unfortunately he had gotten deep and treed a greasy possum. I gave him an adjustment and headed to the truck. Flip had worked his track across the bottom but had gotten into a lot of water and seemed to have hung up on it. I walked in and watched him work for a bit and finally caught him up. I moved down the bottom and cut Cotton , Vapor , and Flip loose in the same swamp bottom. Cotton went left, Flip went right, and Vapor shot straight in bottom. I like the independence that I see from both of these pups. Flip struck left and was opening here and there while Vapor was opening around a slough. Cotton opened left and started a track. She soon loaded up treed. I made my way to her and she was in some rough stuff. Every step you make is about knee deep of mud and water. I got to her an she was in a hedge thicket. There were the blue hedge berries all on the ground and on the hedges. Cotton was treed up all the hedges and I didn't see a coon. I don't think she had a coon but it was thick in there. I Scolded her and made my way to the truck. I moved around and walked in to catch up the pups as both were struggling with the tracks. I moved and cut Cotton and Vapor loose in some nice hardwood hills. Cotton struck followed by Vapor. They worked down a small creek and split up. Vapor let out a locate and hit a tree but didn't stick it. Cotton soon located in the same area and loaded up treed. Vapor came in to the tree after I got there but kept trying to trail off. I leashed up the dogs and Cotton was up a large water oak. I looked and squalled but couldn't get the coon to look. Next drop I cut Goose and Flip loose down another hardwood hollow. Flip stayed gone about 15 minutes and came out. I loaded him up and checked the Garmin. Goose was 8/10's of a mile. I drove around and heard him opening every once in awhile. He soon located and loaded up treed. I made my way to him and he was up a red oak. I looked for a long time and couldn't get the coon to look. I finally bright lighted the tree and luckily found him sitting in a fork. I rolled him out to Goose and called it a night. Not a great hunt but I saw some things out of both of the pups that I liked and some things that concern me. Time will tell if they can make the cut here. Y'all Keep'em Lookin' Up!!
