Two brothers live in the same neighborhood, and one asks the other to take care of his cat while he is out of town on vacation.
He returns from vacation and asks his brother, "So, how is my cat?"
His brother says, "The cat died."
The cat owner is shocked, and says, "That is terrible! You should never give me such bad news bluntly. You should break the news gently, like saying 'The cat went out on the roof. We tried to get her down safely, but then she fell off. She sustained an injury so we took her to the vet. The vet tried very hard and took really good care of her. But sadly, the cat was just too badly injured and she died.' "
The (former) cat-owning brother is very sad, but he doesn't want to belabor the point and decides to change the subject.
"Well, how has our mother been doing while I was gone?" he asks.
His brother says "Well, Mom went out on the roof . . . "
