Huckleberry

Louis, I turned a coon loose for Huckleberry and another pup this evening and they treed it up a pretty good size Oak. I got them off of it and took them back up front. They were hot. I left them up front and came on to the house. Just before dark I was here in the house and I heard them treed again. I stepped out the door and they were treeing hard. I went back over there and I guess the coon had come down and they had treed him again up a big Pine. Huckleberry was treeing hard. I would have knocked it out on them, but it was a sow coon and I didn't want to shoot her. I think Huckleberry will be alright. Sleepy, Maybe this one will get hunted.

Sheba 11

photo for upload

Took Sheba out for a run tonight. Cast her in the same spot that I took Smoke the other night. She went east for about 300 yards and made a swing south for about 150 yards and then she swung southwest back in my direction. When she got to about 180 yards she locked up treed. I rode in to about 75 yards of her and walked on in. She was treed up a big oak that looked like a tornado or maybe hurricane Katrina had given it a rough time at some point in time, but it was loaded with limbs and leaves. I shined for a few minutes without seeing anything. I walked in and shook a vine and walked back out and he looked at me for a second from back up in the limbs and then I didn't see him for a while. I walked around on the other side of the tree and he looked at me 2 or 3 times. Sheba and me both had done got pretty hot, so we left the coon to run again and headed to the 4-wheeler.

Sheba 11

where to post picture

Took Sheba 11 out for a short run tonight. She has been in season for the past 3 weeks. Sure good to get her back out tonight. Turned her down a spring fed branch and she went in 150 yards and struck a good track and moved it on in another 100 yards and treed. That little girl has got a locate on her that makes everyone that hunts with her say (wow). I went around on another road and got close to her. She was treed up a hugh, viney, Turkey pine. I shined it for a few minutes, but I couldn't get anywhere that I could see anything. I walked in a petted her up, and we loaded up and called it a night. It sure was hot out there tonight.

Hank and Sheba 11

[url=https://postimg.cc/image/78aagjut7/][/url

Hank and Sheba 11 are litter mates. Sheba has been a coondog since she was about 8 months old, while her brother Hank sat in a pen all of his life. Don't get me wrong, he was well cared for, just never hunted. I gave Hank to a young guy as a pup, and now with college and work and of course girls. He said he would like to see Hank have a chance to make it and he wanted me to have him back, so at the age of 4 years old Hank starts his Coon Dog journey. When I got Hank he was just kind of like a big good looking lovable pup, Kind of laid back and nothing seem to bother him. He seems to be a smart hound, As Mr. Warren Haslouer told me one time about the Tramp dog. He said Jack, old Tramp is a Smart Hound, at the time I didn't really know what he was talking about. I just thought he meant that Tramp really knew how to tree coons. But after I got Tramp home I learned exactly what he was talking about, but let me get back to my Hank story.
Hank seems to have all the tools, He seems to have a good nose, He runs a track to catch, He has got a good mouth and opens good on track. The few times I have had him out he hasn't ran any off game. The only thing that I see right now that is holding him back is the tree and He seems to get a little better with that each tree we make. I think by spring time he will be pushing his sister pretty hard. Another thing that ties Me and Hank and Sheba togeather is we have the same birthdate Which is tomorrow August 30. The only difference is I was born Aug. 30, 1946 and they were born Aug. 30, 2014.

Happy birthday Mr. Jack. My huckleberry pup is coming along just fine. Sleepy has him running track good and treeing a little after hunting him 4 nights a week all this month. Sleepy says he should make a fine little dog.

Hank and Sheba 11

Hunted Hank and Smoke last night. They went in about 100 yards and Smoke struck a good track and Hank joined in with him. They moved the track on in another 150 yards and Smoke locked up treed. The Garmin showed Hank there and he never left the tree like he had been doing. When I got there he was just sitting, looking up the tree. I petted him up some and he barked some. I wanted to knock the coon out to him, but it was so thick in there that I couldn't see anything and it was a hugh Turkey Pine.
Tonight I took Hank and Sheba 11. The coons were moving good after that shower this evening. They struck a good track pretty quick and moved it in about 100 yards and sheba locked up treed, with hank treeing right behind her. He was treeing good as I walked into the tree, another hugh Turkey Pine. Again I wanted to get the coon out to Hank, but I never could get to where I could shine the tree. I petted them up and we moved on down the swamp close to the river. They struck another track pretty quick and headed toward the river. I don't know wheather or not they just overshot the tree or what, but they made a lose and everything was quite for about a minute, and then Sheba locked up treed. Hank never barked on this one until I got there, He was there at the tree. After I got there he barked some. They were treed up a medium sized Oak. I found the coon pretty quick, but after shinning a minute I could see that it was a sow coon with her little ones. When I saw those little ones, I knew that Hank would just have to wait for another night.

Thank you guys for those Happy birthday wishes, they really made my day.

Bad River Boy

photo url

This old boy has been roaming the river down where I hunt and fish for several years. I've never lost a dog to a Gator, but you know that they are there and it's always in the back of your mind. I'm glad this one finally met his end. They have opened the season up on them for a few days each year. Maybe these Gator hunters will lower the numbers of them down some. I know there are a lot more of them out there. This one was 11 foot 4 inches.

Hank and Sheba 11

Hunted Hank and Sheba tonight. The coons were not moving. I think they must have come down after the rain about middle of the evening. I turned them down a branch and they went in about 200 yards and struck. It was a real cold track. I could tell on the Garmin that Hank was working the track, but it was too cold for him to open. they worked it on in another 100 yards and Sheba locked up treed. Hank stayed at the tree, but he never treed until I got there. They were treed up abig Oak with another one about the same size leaning into it. He could have been there, but I never could get him to look. We moved on down to the river and they went in about 300 yards and Sheba just came treed. I walked into her and she was treed on a bit vine going up into a large oak. If he was there I couldn't get him to look. The canopy was thick in there and the moon was brighter than my light. we called I a night.

Sheba and Smoke

Hunted Sheba and Smoke up above Monticello, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night. I didn't hunt them togeather. I hunted Sheba on Monday and Wednesday and Smoke on Tuesday night. On Monday night Sheba made 4 trees. I looked at 3 of them and the other one I couldn't find. I don't think the coons were moving much, On two of them she just came treed and on the other two the tracks were cold.

Tuesday night I hunted Smoke. Smoke Made 3 trees. 2 were persimmon trees. I cant ever remember seeing but one coon where the dogs were treed in a persimmon tree and I didn't see one in them tonight either. He went deep on the 3 one and treed in a big oak den tree. If he was there he was on the inside.

Hunted Sheba again on Wednesday night. She struck one and crossed a slough and drove him on in another 100 yards and locked up on a big oak. I crossed the slough and walked on in to her. I just knew I would see this one. It was up a big oak. I found three spots that I could see the lower 3/4 of the tree pretty good, but the top part of the tree was solid limbs and leaves and I had forgotten my coonsqualler. On the next one she went deep and just come treed. I walked in to her and she was treed on a big oak den tree. If he was there he was on the inside. All togeather I enjoyed a good three nights of hunting. It sure was hot all three nights

Sheba and Hank

Hunted these two tonight. Turned them down a branch that runs through the swamp. Sheba went right down the branch and Hank turned up the branch. Sheba went in about 100 yards and struck a good track. I looked on the Garmin and Hank was headed her way, but before he could get there Sheba locked up treed. Hank hit the tree as soon as he got there and treed good. I walked in to where they were treed and they were treed up a big Turkey pine. I had forgotten to put the card back in my camera so no pictures. I backed out toward the branch where I could get a good view from that side, but he wasn't looking on that side. I went around on the other side where there has been just enough leaves that have fallen off that I found a small opening to see through and there he sat up close to the top. We left him to run again and moved on down toward the river. Never got a bark. When they came back in I loaded them up and came back out to a dried up slough. and turned them up it. After about 20 minutes Hank came back in Sheba was about 250 yards in and I could tell on the garmin that she was working a real cold track. Some times when she is by herself she wont open on these old cold tracks. This was a cold feeder track. She would stop from time to time and check a tree and move on. She moved it on across another slough and on in another 100 yards and locked up treed. Hank took off to her when she treed and I had to come back out to another road and go around a field of young planted pine trees. when I got there she was treed about 20 yrds off the edge of a deer plot up a hugh oak. I had a good view from the deer plot side but it was bad stuff on the other side. I looked for a few minutes and didn't find him and I blew my squaller and he looked at me from about 3/4 of the way up. Sheba had done a good job on this one so I knocked it out to her. Hank was glad to get it too. We called it a night. It felt pretty good out there tonight, It wasn't quite as hot as it has been.

Old Sheba and Hank

I decided to take Old Sheba out for a run tonight as it has been awhile since she has been out. We took her son Hank out with us. I turned them down a branch that runs through the swamp on its way to the river. They went in a little over 300 yards and struck a cold track. They worked it on in another 150 yards and treed. I went around on another road and got closer to them and walked on in to them. they were treed up a pretty good sized oak and I could not find a spot where I could see anything, so I leashed them up and headed to the river. I turned them down river and they went in and struck another cold track. They worked it on in 300 yards and Sheba treed. Hank dindnt bark much on this tree. I walked in to them and they were treed up a hugh oak and it was harder to shine than the first one. We walked out and called it a night. It sure was good to get ole Sheba out for a run. She has been a good one.

Sheba 11

Took Sheba out for a round tonight. We went down below Columbia to a place on the river that belongs to a friend of mine. Cast her South down the side of an old lake, between the lake and the river. She left out down the side of the lake. She went in about 300 yards and struck and crossed what looked on the Garmin to be a wet place between this Lake and another Lake that I didn't know was there. I had only hunted in here a couple of times and usually had hunted up the river. This was my first time to go down the river. She was beginning to get deep and I was beginning to worry about the highway. She was now a little over 600 yards in down beside this second lake. I decided I had better get around there in case she went on toward the highway. I went back to the road that I came in on and headed back toward the highway. I stopped at about 100 yards from the highway and listened and she was treed a little over 3oo yards in. I found an old woods road. It wasn't exactly going toward her, but it was going toward the river. I took it and came to another road that turned to the left that went a little more toward her and it led to the second lake. When I got to the lake I looked at the Garmin and she was still over 300 yards down beside the Lake. I walked to the edge of the Lake and shined my light out across it and there were several alligator eyes looking at me from different spots out across the lake, some of them looked like pretty good sized old boys. I couldn't tell how close Sheba was to the lake, so I headed toward her. A couple of time I came to a place where I could see out in the lake and each time would see Aligator eyes. Sheba was treed up a big Oak den tree. I shined it for a few minutes and If he was there, he was on the inside. I leashed her up and we made our way back to the 4-wheeler. I will wait for colder weather to hunt hear again when the Aligators have hibernated. We came out and stopped at a service station and got some refreshments and went back to another swamp on the river. I turned Sheba into a nice Oak and Cyprus swamp with a couple of sloughs in it. she went in 400 yards and struck and worked her way around the edge of a slough to 600 yards and Treed. I went around to another road and got closer to her. I noticed she wasn't treeing as hard as she usually does. When I got to her I saw that she was treed in a hollow tree wit a hole at the bottom of the tree, as you can see in the bottom picture. I shined the tree just to be sure, but he was on the inside. We made our way back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.

Sheba 11

I went down the river a ways tonight. Turned Sheba off an old woods road into a hardwood, Cyprus swamp with a slough running through the middle of it. She went in a little over 500 yards and struck a cold track. Worked it south aways and circled and came back north for about 300 yards and turned east and circled and went back north to a little over 600 yards and circled again and headed back north, close to the road that I had come in on. I thought she was going to cross over into the pines, but she just kept coming north between the road and the slough. She got to within about 350 yards from me and locked up treed. I knew she wasn't far off the road so I road around close to where she was at and she was about 50 yards off the road(my kind of dog) I walked into where she was treed and she was treed up a small viney tree that was crooked over with a lot of vines. I didn't find him at first, but I walked in and shook a vine and he looked at me. I let Sheba have this one. We walked back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.
