The theory that we are a poor shooting team is being overplayed, and that while making 7 threes per game like we did against UNC may not be the norm, I think it is closer to reality than not hitting our first until the closing minutes of the game. I looked back our preseason stats for what I think we would all consider our three best shooters (Devin, Aaron, and Tyler). All three shot the ball very well during the preseason, and Tyler and Devin have actually shot better than I thought during the season. Aaron, however, is really struggling from deep.
Here are the stats for our preseason games vs our regular season games thus far.
3 Point Percentages from 8 Preseason Games
Devin Booker: 11/25 = 44%
Aaron Harrison: 14/30 = 46.67%
Tyler Ulis: 9/18 = 50%
3 Point Percentages from 11 Regular Season Games
Devin Booker: 17/42 = 40.5%
Aaron Harrison: 13/51 = 25.5%
Tyler Ulis: 9/18 = 50% (9 Games)
Aside from Aaron, our "shooters" aren't shooting the ball poorly at all. Our team percentage is really struggling due to our "non-shooters" shooting too many 3's IMO, which is something that is easy to address. I know UNC fans are frustrated because there was this public notion that we are terrible from behind the three point line, yet we hit several against them. The truth is that there were only two attempts from our "non-shooters" (Both misses by Andrew and Trey, which is fine in moderation), and then our three shooters listed above accounted for 7-13 (53.8%).
Basically I typed a lot of text to prove a very short point. Teams are going to continue to sag back in a zone or make us beat them from outside based on this public notion that we can't shoot. Honestly, with our versatility it is probably still the best option, but Devin, Aaron, and Tyler are all plenty capable of capitalizing on that defensive strategy. Aaron is not going to continue shooting 25% when he shot over 35% last year and over 40% in the preseason. Devin and Tyler's stats speak for themselves already. Teams are going to be shocked every time we hit 6, 7, 8 threes against them when in reality they shouldn't be. There are 3 very solid shooters on this team, and then a couple more guys capable of making one here or there. I do not expect that cold streak we went through to be the norm this season.
