Independant

There are many that like this trait to different levels. Perry Ross certainly does and would be a good source. His Sally female has done some winning and he is top notch.

Piazon is also a name that comes to mind and he has spoken for himself in the woods and stud pen. Mike has done a excellent job promoting him.

Tom Jennings Image dog is one I hunted with that was as very independant. I think he passed but that blood is still available.

Paul Vaughn has Atta Girl that was very independent when I hunted with her. Ranger would fall in that group too. Tim can post who owns him now.

Cuda was independant and looked good when I hunted with him.

Looking for Timber Hannah would fit in that mold too.

Clyde's Blue Iron Brummy certainly did not pay attention to other dogs and is certainly my style of hound. I think we accidently cut 7 hounds loose that pleasure hunt. All that noise going on did not phase him. He got treed. It was not intended but worked out. Ha Ha

I believe all the ones I mentioned are Grandnites now. Those are the hounds that come to mind when I think breeding for independence. I know there are many and I hope people will keep sharing their experiences.

Labeld

Seems if a dog goes looking for a coon and does not go looking where the other dogs are going. He/she gets Labeled as a loner. In my option a hound should have one thing on there mind when cut loose, finding a coon, not going with the other dogs until they run across a track, there is a difference between one getting alone to be alone and one going to find a coon, but many carry the loner label unjustifiable.... I've enjoyed reading this thread. While reading through these posts, I've noticed several times folks saying that and independent dog is not fun to hunt while pleasure hunting. This just doesn't make sense to me. In my opinion, while pleasure hunting with my friends I would much rather walk to split trees all night, whether it be my dog or theirs, than I would walking to trees with all the dogs treeing.

Again this is just my opinion

Turn em lose in one direction I want mine the opposite. Pleasure or Competition. I can hear em better when they are alone, I can tune easier when they are alone, cant be blamed for mean when they are alone, score more points when they are alone, can feed them THEIR coon when they are alone.

To me if they are packed up they are relying on another dog to help find a lose, they also will break their neck to cover.

DEAD LONER IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Independant

It really depends on how each of us define it. I hear so many definitions of what it means. No matter how it's defined I don't personally like coon skippers or last coon up hounds. I do like independant hounds that do their on thing. To me there is a difference. JMHO

Independent hound will start track and finish no matter the company. I personally want one that will blow in there half a mile then start hunting. I like walking other peoples dogs to mine.

Many like that blowing in their before hunting style.

Speaking of a hound that blows in there 1/2 mile before hunting, what score would you expect to see out of that style hound in a 2 hr nite hunt in thick coon? I know some will get by trying not to run the clock while walking to the dog to gain more hunt time.

I've had several people ask me if I knew of a hound that would bump a deer and fall off on a coon. It's certainly a strategy many like these days.

I've had several people ask me if I knew of a hound that would bump a deer and fall off on a coon. It's certainly a strategy many like these days.

Idc what they do to get in there deep as long as when they put there head up I can tree em a pretty accurate. Im talking one bark locate tree dog. And as far as a score doesnt matter to me if its 900 or 225 as long as it says CW beside my name.

Hard to win a hunt treeing off other people's dogs. I think I would minus out quick personally. Ha Ha. I do get what your saying though. Many people like different styles.

lazy

I guess im a lazy man I don't want my dog going past 5 coon to get deep and by himself. I want the closest coon in the woods and that's usaly the quickest. some of the best dogs I have ever followed are the one that just keep treeing coons behind of and beside of a blast through the woods till I find a hot coon dog. IT REALY GRIPES ME TO SEE COONS SITTING UP GOING TO MY DOG. if you get in thick coon the only hope a mile deep dog has in a hunt is wasting your dogs time going to him. this said I do want one to go a mile if he has to but he better be hunting on the way.

Good thread with many good posts.

My potlickers are always dead loners that always have the coon on the internet. I don't know what seems to happen, but when you take them hunting for real with other dogs, danged if they don't pack up & tree empties Go figure!

Like ole Mr. Jones says .... just pat em on the head & tell em good boy anyway!
