02-06-10 hunt

Went out for a short hunt last night. I went by myself, I took Zeus and Bash. I didn't turn loose until after 10:30pm. It was 28 degrees, with a pretty good frost on and a bright moon. I turned loose in the same spot that they got spooked out of the other night. I cut them loose, Zeus gets struck, Bash strikes in later. Zeus, is moving deeper to the east and Bash is trying to go deeper to the south, but moves back out with Zeus to the east and south. Zeus barks here, there and yonder and slams a tree he is little over 700yds in, down in a swampy creek bottom. Bash is treed with him. I head into them. Bash is running around barking at the air and on the tree. I'm guess the scent is drifting down. It is driving Bash crazy. Zeus is locked to the tree hammering away. It was a cold clear night and the sound was carrying good. Zeus running the track, and hitting the tree, man it sounded good. Anyway, Zeus has at least 2 coon, I thought I may have seen a 3rd in his tree. I was very proud of those 2 young dogs and the way they performed last night. Below are a couple pics from last nights hunt.

02-07-12 hunt

Hunted again by myself last night. I decided not to go until late. I hit the woods with Zeus and Bash at 11:30pm. It was 36 degrees, moon out with just a touch of cloud cover, still bright out.
First drop, cut them loose, they started hunting the small section out, but it wasn't long and the coyotes sent the hounds back to me. We load up and move. Second drop, they hunted part of a section, hit the creek and ran it out to the road. Garmin showed me they were head for the road, so I headed to them off and caught them on the road. I was beginning to think I should have stayed home. I had talked to my friend John Bishop, just before I left to go hunting last night. John had just gotten in from hunting Sonic by himself and had a fair hunt. John told me Sonic treed 2 dens, 2 singles and a greaser. My third drop, I cut them along a big oak fence row. Zeus gets struck quick, loops through the fence row and then heads back behind me across the road in to a big bean field. Bash strikes in with Zeus, It seems to be a good hot track, with lots of running room. I have been hoping to get Bash in this type of situation. Bash and Zeus are opening well and moving the track good. What seems like no time they are 3/4 mile treed in between two roads in a fence row behind someones house. Garmin, shows me there is an oilfield road that will get me closer. It does, it puts me within 300 yds of them. Zeus is locked down hammering, Bash is a little loose, but knows the coon is there. They have the coon, what turns out to be a mean, bad azz coon, which I was not wanting to deal with late a night behind someones house. Zeus and Bash take control of the situation, and we head for the truck. I should have called it a night, but I didn't. One more turn loose. I cut them, Zeus strikes fairly close and moves it on in. Bash opens a few times with him. Bash sounds like he is wanting to tree. I have lighted collars and I can see Bash, and every now and then I think I see Zeus' flashing collar, but it is way higher up than Bash is. This is a low lying flat swampy area I am in. I check the Garmin, it shows Zeus stationary. I head in. Zeus is about 20 feet up on a leaning den tree. He has worked himself up into a tight spot and can't turn around. He nearly falls a couple of times. I climb out to him, I can just barely grab his back legs. I slowly pull him to me. I get him turned around and behind me. We work our way back down and head for the truck. I decide to call it a night. Below is a picture of last nights hunt.

My DC30 problem fixed

Garmin Customer Service
I would like to share with everyone my experience with Garmins customer service. First off, I had a Garmin DC30 that came with my Astro 220 bundle package. This DC30 is over 2 years old. The collar material was deteriorating, so I bought a replacement collar at the Winter Classic. I started taking the old one apart and noticed when I unplugged the little wire that is stitched in between the layers of the collar that the connection had very, very small brass colored pieces fall out. This connection in the collar is a very delicate one. There is also a fine needle connection up inside that mates to the collar if you are just a little off you can miss the hole and bend the needle connection off to the side. But it will still snap together making you think you have made a proper connection, so be careful messing with this needle type connection. Anyway, I knew mine would not work again properly after taking it apart and seeing the fine damage. I called Garmin, I talked to a very nice and helpful Lady in Olathe, KS. She check my numbers and informed me my collar was out of warranty, which I figured it was, but I wanted to see if maybe I could get replacement parts and try to fix it. She took down some info from me, and told me to package up the DC30 and send it to Olathe, KS. I packaged it up and sent it to Garmin on FEB.6 and got it back today on FEB.11. The USPS mail wasted no time getting my package delivered and wasted no time getting it delivered back to me. I sent it with delivery confirmation and Garmin sent it back to me with delivery confirmation. Also Garmin shipped it out the same day they received it on FEB. 8. I truly wasn't expecting to see the DC 30 for at least another week or two. They kept my old collar and sent me back a brand new one. Normal repair rates on these start at $89.99, but mine was done for a flat $50.00. You don't see customer service like this very often anymore. It was a pleasant experience and it makes me even more confident in owning my Garmin tracking system. I would like to thank the people of Garmin in Olathe, KS and the US postal service.

Chris

I'm waiting on the replacement for my 2nd (returned under warranty) DC-40 collar.I agree, Garmin has been top notch to deal with in standing behind their products.Very professional and polite. That makes a big difference in a return customer on future products.I have had the same good service from "Sportdog" on an E-Collar system and a bark collar.Glad you had a good experience.Yer hounds are look'n good as always.

02-11-12 hunt

Well, I didn't hunt last night weather turned bad wind blowing and cold. I decided to stay home with the family and enjoy some good old fashioned TV, plus I had to pick the girl up from roller skating. I haven't been for a few nights. We still have 3 days left before season goes out here. Then we will have a 10 day period where we can't run the dogs at all. Work is suppose to get very busy here this spring and summer and I probably won't have much time for the hounds, but will try to run them when I can.

I would like to congratulate Nate Reynolds and his Blitz dog on their 1st place UKC win last night. This was Blitz's first hunt he has ever been in, and the conditions were tough here last night. But Nate has been hunting Blitz hard this season and treeing many coon with him. Blitz just turned 9 months old and is a litter mate to my Sonic dog. Blitz and Sonic are out of NiteCh Harpeth River Blue Jack and McGinnis' Blue Thunder. This has been an outstanding cross, natural, easy and early starters That are proving themselves to be dandy's to own. Once again Congrats Nate and Blitz. Below is a picture of Nate and Blitz earlier this season, when Blitz treed his 35th coon by himself this season.

02-12-12 hunt

Went hunting tonight with Nate and his dog Blitz, I took Zeus. First drop, Blitz gets struck, Zeus strikes in, Blitz moves the track well and get treed in a Junk pile. Blitz has the coon nose to nose. Zeus is also caught at the junk pile. Second drop, we cut them Zeus and Blitz strike in, and run the track in 700 yds. Blitz trees with Zeus right there with him. We get to the tree they have the meat. We load up and move. We cut them loose, Blitz strikes left handed and Zeus strikes in right handed. Nate's Garmin has lost Blitz at about 50 yds in, we walk in, and Zeus comes treed in a hole. I head over to Zeus and we can hear Blitz under ground. We end up having to dig Blitz out, but we get him out safe and sound. Nate's has a very nice hound in Blitz. We decided to call it a night. I head home and go by some of my hunting spots and decide to cut Zeus loose by himself a couple times before I go home. I cut Zeus, he hits a track and move it on in a 400yds and trees. I get to him it is a den tree. I move. I cut Zeus again, he strike in and trees once again at about 400yds in. I get to him it is a large den. I cut him loose again and he gets in a small section that has a small pond in it. Zeus is getting close to the pond and I decide to catch him. I didn't want to take a chance with him getting out on the ice and fall through. The ice was just about right for that to happen if he would have got out on it. So, I get him on lead and head for the truck and home. Below are a few pictures of tonight's hunt.

02-13-12 HUNT

Went hunting by myself last night. I took Zeus and Bash. By the time I got turned loose we had about an inch and a half of fresh snow on the ground and still snowing. First and only drop of the night, I cut them, they get in 200 yds and loop back past me. This is where I should have caught them and move on, but I didn't. I' m watching them on the Garmin. They are at 600yds and and Garmin shows Bash treed, but I can't hear him. Garmin shows Zeus going deeper away from Bash and heading for the creek. I drive up the road and get within 350 yds of Bash, I still can't hear him. Garmin showing in the same spot hasn't moved a bit. Now I am getting a little worried. I know there is several fences around and that he maybe hung in a fence, so I head into him following the Garmin. I run those tracker flashing lights on my collars, makes me feel a little better about the safety of my dogs when out running.I get within 80 yds nothing, 30 yds nothing, 12 yds nothing. I am right by the fence and looked down there is my new DC30 collar buried in the snow, just enough to keep the flashing light from being seen very well. It looks like Bash stuck his head in the fence and got stuck, and slipped his tracking collar with the flashing light. Garmin says Zeus is still in another 700 yds working the creek edge. I am hoping Bash is still with him. There has still not been on bark out of either dog. At this point I am wishing I stayed home. The creek bottoms I am in looks like a tornado went through it lots of large trees up rooted laying every where and laying in different directions. This bottom is also loaded with deep slough holes everywhere. The picture I am trying to paint here is this creek bottom section I am in is a nightmare for walking. I finally get close and can see Zeus' flashing light, I call for him and he comes, then I see Bash right behind him, what a relief. It was easier getting back out than it was getting to them. We head for the truck, I drove around a little in the country just looking around to see if anything was moving. I never seen a critter of any kind no deer, no nothing. I decided to consider myself lucky that I had both my dogs I turned loose earlier, caught and in the box headed for home. Luckily one of the few bad hunts I have had this year. We have 2 more nights of season left, maybe we can end it on a good note.

When your out hunting alone and you get in one of those undesirable positions, do you ever ask yourself how could one enjoy such a sport? What makes a person leave a nice warm home, a pleasant spouse and a good nights sleep, just to go listen to a hound run and tree a coon? Is it an IQ test that were failing? I run out for a short hunt and tree a couple quick coon. I should go home but I cut again and again until it's just a few hours beofore daylight. The temperature has dropped and the tundra is frozen, you watch not to get a whip from a branch on the cold cheek. It must be a sickness. I feel good about how blue has performed and can't wait to do it the next night. There must be a screw loose somewhere.

Yes, I find myself asking all kinds of questions when I find myself in those undesirable situations. I also catch myself saying"one more drop" usually followed by"I'll never do that again"First question that usually comes to mind is "what am I doing out here". Then I hear the sound of old Blue echoing through the bottoms and then I know why I am out there. I really like to see the pups and young hounds progress. I have been very fortunate this season to have 3 nice young ones. It has been a very enjoyable season this year. Yes there has been some tough nights, but that's part of it. I wouldn't want them all to easy turn outs. I enjoy running a smart old coon, that really makes it hard on the dogs. I like the pop ups once in awhile, but I prefer a running coon for the young ones. Honestly starting these young ones I would rather tree that one hard running coon over 10 pop ups any day, but thats just me.

02-14-12 hunt

Went hunting by myself last night. I took Zeus and Bash. First drop. Zeus goes right handed, Bash goes left left handed. Zeus strikes in the ditch and Bash strikes shortly after on the edge of the corn field. Bash and Zeus are 100 yds apart tracking. Not long after Bash strikes he moves his track into the timber and trees. Zeus is having a little trouble figuring his track out. I head to Bash and he is treeing very well. I get to Bash it is a den tree. Zeus is still opening on his track the whole time Bash is treed. I pull Bash off to send into Zeus, but he ends up coming back to the tree. I take Bash to the truck. By this time Zeus is treed. I head into Zeus. I can see why Zeus was having a little trouble with the tracking. He has been tracking on the frozen water of the ditch, the problem was the ice was strong enough to hold a coon but not Zeus. The ditch is all busted up pieces of ice, luckily not very deep. Zeus is treed right on the edge of the ditch in an oak tree. He has the meat. After seeing what Zeus was dealing with, I was very pleased with him. Zeus is starting to balance out very well. He has been running some long hard cold tracks. I take Zeus to the truck and we move. I cut them loose close to the h_llhole I was in the night before. Guess where they end up. Yep back in that jungle. Garmin shows them in there at about 800yds., but they are still working and they are working closer to me. They get within 550yds, Zeus is treed but not treeing right. I head in. Zeus is tree on a log jam pile right on one of those big deep slough holes. I get him and Bash on lead and head for the truck. I was going to call it a night, but I have one little spot not too far from the house I decide to hit before I go home. I cut them, Zeus strikes, Bash strikes. They move the track out by the gravel road then back in towards the creek. They both look up at about the same time. I head in. Zeus is treed slick and Bash is treeing all around in the air. Bash is going nuts. I pull them out and send them on. Zeus and Bash get treed in hedge row. I can't find anything, but hedge rows can be tough on a dog. I pull them off and send them on. They head back into the timber. Zeus trees and Bash trees. They have the coon. We load up and head for the house. As season comes to a close here, Bash showed me last night it is time to start hunting him alone. He did a very good job last night. Bash is 7 1/2 months old, very proud of him. Bash is out of Nitech Harpeth River Blue Jack and Dual Grand Anderson's Fox Creek Penny. Below are a few pictures from last nights hunt.

02-15-12 hunt, last night of season

Tonight was our last night of season. I decided I better go, even though it was raining a little. I took Zeus and Bash again tonight. First drop, Zeus slams a tree in short order, followed by Bash treeing with him. I head in to them Zeus is treed on small den tree that I have treed in before. Bash is treeing on Zeus' tree and the tree next to it, which has a nest in it. I lead off and cut them. Zeus strikes, Bash opens a couple times. Zeus is running with a little different bawl on track. He is tracking up and down the ditch. I suspect it may have been a mink, I don't believe it was a coon. I got Zeus caught and start walking back. Bash decides to go off in the other direction. He gets about 500 yds down the ditch and Garmin showing him working that area heavy. So, I head to him, nothing ever comes of it, I put him on lead and we head for the truck. I stop off at one of my hot spots for my last drop. I cut them, Zeus slams a tree 80 yds in next to the road, Bash is right there with him. They have the meat. We head for the truck, I check my watch and I have one hour to spare before season ends. I decided to end it right there on a good note. It has been a good season. I have seen all 3 of my young dogs progress very well. This was Zeus' first full coon season he is 20 months old. I have seen Zeus go from a tight mouth treeing machine, to opening on the ground real good, running cold tracks very well, and also a nice tree dog. This was Sonic's first coon season, Sonic just turn 9 months old ,Sonic wasn't hunted hard but has turned out to be a heck of a nice young dog. I will get the report in a few days from John Bishop on how Sonic finished out the season. Bash the youngest of them all at 7 1/2 months old, did a very good job this year. Bash wasn't hunted very hard this year, he went from tagging along to treeing by himself and holding pressure while another dog is still runnnig track 100 yds from him. I can't wait to see what these hounds look like after next season. I had a really enjoyable season this year. I am very proud of my young dogs. Below are a couple pictures of tonights hunt. Thanks for reading.

Lowell,

Our harvest season went out on Feb. 15 followed by a 10 day no running period. We will be able to hit the woods again Feb.26th. Heck Lowell, even if coon season was in I wouldn't have time to hunt, with all the time, thinking and typing I have been doing on percentages.Hope all is going well around your place. I'm going to make a trip to Alabama shortly. Alabama season is still in. Maybe I can thin the AL. coon population a little.

Better hurry, Bama's season goes out a week from today. Are you going to be down this way Saturday night? I'll be at my club in Alabama Saturday night and would love for you to join us.

Clyde,

I will be back home by Sat. night. I got a full day ahead of me Sat. getting pups delivered. It can be a lot of work trying to get pups in the right hands. If it wasn't for that I sure would have gave it a shot to be there. How far is your club from Cullman, AL?

Pretty good piece. I'd say 3 hours. It's right on the GA state line just north of I-85
