02-07-12 hunt
Hunted again by myself last night. I decided not to go until late. I hit the woods with Zeus and Bash at 11:30pm. It was 36 degrees, moon out with just a touch of cloud cover, still bright out.
First drop, cut them loose, they started hunting the small section out, but it wasn't long and the coyotes sent the hounds back to me. We load up and move. Second drop, they hunted part of a section, hit the creek and ran it out to the road. Garmin showed me they were head for the road, so I headed to them off and caught them on the road. I was beginning to think I should have stayed home. I had talked to my friend John Bishop, just before I left to go hunting last night. John had just gotten in from hunting Sonic by himself and had a fair hunt. John told me Sonic treed 2 dens, 2 singles and a greaser. My third drop, I cut them along a big oak fence row. Zeus gets struck quick, loops through the fence row and then heads back behind me across the road in to a big bean field. Bash strikes in with Zeus, It seems to be a good hot track, with lots of running room. I have been hoping to get Bash in this type of situation. Bash and Zeus are opening well and moving the track good. What seems like no time they are 3/4 mile treed in between two roads in a fence row behind someones house. Garmin, shows me there is an oilfield road that will get me closer. It does, it puts me within 300 yds of them. Zeus is locked down hammering, Bash is a little loose, but knows the coon is there. They have the coon, what turns out to be a mean, bad azz coon, which I was not wanting to deal with late a night behind someones house. Zeus and Bash take control of the situation, and we head for the truck. I should have called it a night, but I didn't. One more turn loose. I cut them, Zeus strikes fairly close and moves it on in. Bash opens a few times with him. Bash sounds like he is wanting to tree. I have lighted collars and I can see Bash, and every now and then I think I see Zeus' flashing collar, but it is way higher up than Bash is. This is a low lying flat swampy area I am in. I check the Garmin, it shows Zeus stationary. I head in. Zeus is about 20 feet up on a leaning den tree. He has worked himself up into a tight spot and can't turn around. He nearly falls a couple of times. I climb out to him, I can just barely grab his back legs. I slowly pull him to me. I get him turned around and behind me. We work our way back down and head for the truck. I decide to call it a night. Below is a picture of last nights hunt.
