Early in the year at the first few hunts your success or failure decided your future plans. From there it takes care of itself because you either are in up to your ears or fall behind to the point you can't win . The hard part is being right there at the top and having to do more than you'd like but at the same time knowing it's not an everyday opportunity. If you 're going to quit the first time you don't win you shouldn't start because it can get hard to justify the cost when the pay off don't balance the books.
Far as Fri. shows and hunts the local clubs have them all the time and somebody must go . Like I've always said " you have to be there to have a chance" . Facts tell me that most really don't want to work & spend to earn it.
From Jan. to March the State hunts in the program are Fl., GA., SC., LA. and AL.. Anyone winning at these CAN go North,East or West when the weather breaks and the other States start to happen but if you haven't gone to those you're behind and better have a good one and lots of gas.

South had 8 major events early in the year so you could travel test the waters and get a jump, west has 5 major events some early some latter, and then come the middle of the year most of the major breed days are central in the mid-west for a total of 6 major breed days ??

8 in the South
5 in the West
and 6 major breed days in the Mid-West ?????

I don't think any one place had or has an advantage over anyone else, unless you live in FL or CA or VT then yes you have some travleing to do, but lmao you still do under this new system

Little ol hunts of 15-70 and you think those 5 you mentioned are major events. You should attend. See how major they are.
The ones that put on the big events deserve it? I thought the hunters and showmen were what it is all about. If it doesn't work for them you can bet it will get changed back. Becouse with out them there is NOTHING...what is best for them is best for UKC and that is what it is all about.

Earning Purina points at major events I attended was a bonus and it WAS open to ANYBODY who wanted to enter.
They may be right it might be won with a handful of points earned locally but in my mind that won't make it a prestigious award.
I don't like to think about it but in another 10 years you may have to watch the Westminster Dog Show to see a Coonhound. Not because we bred the hunt out of them but because they don't have a legal purpose in life any more like many you see on there now. My Dads time was the hay day of the Field Trials and this was mine but it's amazing how many don't know or care if we treed one last night.

I would say the people at Tailgate Adventures and websites like UKC and the one Drew runs at CoonDawgs, help our sport out the most. It's all about publicizing an event or event(s) to draw new people and youngsters to the sport. I do my best to "educate" outsiders and youngsters on what coonhunting exactly is and encourage. It's difficult. As you stated, society is changing, but if you love to hunt and run dogs, you will find a place to do it and have a good time. I know I will. It can be outlawed all they want, yet I'll find a way because I love the sport so much.

Yep might have to go to silent dogs and a good Garmin but I will be right there with you. If they want to make me an out law all they have to do is outlaw the sport or guns.

No offense ever taken.... just wanted to remind everyone that we drive too and put out the money to travel and to compete too....

I have been to many purina events over the last 5 or so years and try to make both days when I can.

B&T days only has a one day show unless you have something qualifeid for the memorial...which I did not this year. We were on the grounds Friday evening and spent some time with friends before heading to the hotel...

MONEY is going to be a big factor regardless in the coming years.

I do hope it all works out I just HATE that the major hunts that a lot of people go to any way are not going to count.

I have one question.How many dogs did Hard woods Dan draw and beat?And if i understood this new format, i could draw the same dogs all year. And i wonder if purina is going to give away any plastic dog food bowls @ ORANGEBURG SC

dont like the change

to change the purina race is the most crazy thing i have ever hear i think it will hurt the big hunts i could care less about the state hunts . this is a big mistake bar none ! ! !

It was not my decision . I won 51 % of my cast (660) purina points.And was the leader after bluetick days. Its a shame to think that i was out of my league or it was more than i could handle. I guess the rebel pups were more important.

THE THING I DONT LIKE. BY THE TIME YOU GET TO THE WV STATE. The top dogs will be at contender status, and the average joe wont be able to see how his dog stacks up againstthose supposedly top dogs.

You need to be a contender. That is the only way you are going to know how your dog stacks up. Hunting against 3 other dogs that show up for state doesn't prove or show you anything. I can take a pup to state and hunt it. Just becouse you win at state doesn't tell you anything about your dog. Nobody has to qualify, there for you can get lucky and get drawn out with 3 muts in a good hunting area and your the winner. The only thing you are a winner of though is a lucky draw.

When you hunt grnitech cast, you rarely draw all three mutts. LOL You think a purina dog that has 4 cast wins cant be a mutt. LOL That is a good one!!!!! HIGH PAID HANDLERS can grand mutts the same and as local yokal can.

I am all for the STATE HUNTS change. But I would like to think, people want to say they went around the country and was the most consistant hound, and beat high percentage of the hounds that was throwed at them.

People talk about Purina blocker dog in the past. WAIT TILL THE MONEY MEN FIGURE OUT ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS SEND A BUNCH OF HANDLERS TO GET 4 cast wins early in the race. And then they will be sure to draw the dog they want to win it. IT WILL BE EASLIER THAN EVER TO MAKE SURE THE DOG THEY WANT TO WIN, WINS!!!!! IF one owner can get 3 contenders(weather its in his name or not) HE WOULD BE ABLE TO CONTROL A PURINA CAST PRETTY EASY..

Yeah Yeah people will say they are going to have non hunting judges. But if some just trees behind someone else that is a huge help.

If you reread my post I didn't say that they were muts. I said they could be. It is all in the luck of the draw you don't have to qualify. I was saying that if you qualify a dog for the Purina cast at least you know the dogs you are hunting against has done some winning. You can walk away knowing you have done something.
I am not trying to take anything away from the winners. I am just saying a lot of it the way it is set up is luck of the draw. If you have won enough cast wins to be in the purina hunt you have been real lucky on the draws or you are packing a pretty good dog.
In other words if I won the purina cast I would feel I had done more than just an open cast.

I didnt know wisconsin had a state association. Hebron is finr but I think they might have a hard time putting over 30 dogs in the woods.
