GA Dawg, Tail Kicker,HOBO's Son In Law,
Congratulations those are some really nice looking Bucks.
Kind of funny, It apears that the Coon Hunters are better at Deer Hunting than the Deer Hunters. LOL

Thats cause we get to scout at night and it dont skeer the bigguns off..If only these hard core deer hunters knew that..They'd all take up coonhuntin AND maybe let me on the prime coonhuntin land lol......

I will say this. I had this one pegged. Never was more confident I was going to kill a deer than this one. Saw him last Monday night in the creek in the photo background. Had his bed figured out and didn't put any pressure on him. Set up on him Saturday morning and he came in just like he was suppose to. Shot him within a few yards where I saw him a five days earlier. 30 yard shot. 20 ga. H&R Ultra Slugger. Leupold 2x - 7x. Winchester platinum tips. A memorable experience.

I bet Gingerich is proud you got him. Those hard runnin coons just got a little more scarce.

My mess up

Had an encounter with this deer not 5 days ago. he spotted me on the ground at 30 yards away and bolted. Got the chance to take him yesterday morning at about 200 yds around 8am. I took the shot even though he was in some thick brush and thought it was a good one. Coyotes started howling right after I shot. Watched him run off and out of sight and hearing. Started looking around 830 for him. Found blood and followed it all the way to the main creek behind the house that leads into the river. Once I got to the creek I lost blood. I crossed the creek and walked the banks till 1100am looking and found nothing. I came home. Wife and I went back in the afternoon and started from where I stopped. Found several spots where he had laid down and had a good amount of blood in them. Long story short I do believe the coyotes found him, pushed him, then finished him off. His neck had several bite marks with the hair pulled out and his back legs were the same way. All I could do was drop my head from being depressed. Took my folding saw out of my pack and got the only thing that wasnt messed up, His horns. Shot this deer with my wifes 243. The day I dont take my 30-06 in the woods, I see the deer I have hunted all season. The shot was far back from where I had the cross hairs. Either hit a limb and deflected it, or I just was so nervous, I pulled the shot. Thats probably what it was but the limb sounds better, lol.

I can finally add one! Doesn't have any head gear, but she's one less for my dogs to run! Lol

Got this Doe on the last day of the week long gun season with my 20gauge. I passed on a lot of deer, including one fawn that stayed under my stand for several minutes, but this was the one for me!
Only seen one buck the entire week, and he wasn't a shooter for me. So it's back to the bow and then more gun season later on.

I killed a small 11 point on Friday evening of gun season here in Ohio. He was a big deer around 220 lbs. He just came walking right in about 40 yard shot. I was in my climber about 35 ft high, I shot the first time and he just stood there, I thought I missed so I followed up with a second shot that dropped him. Come to find out I blasted him on both shots. I used a winchester semi auto 20 gauge, very accurate shotgun.

hey todd how do you like that ultra slugger gun from h&r i'm thinking on buying one an would like to know how you like yours?? i been useing a mossberg pump with a rifled slug barrel on it but i think them h&r slugger guns would be more accurate for long range shots. some of out shots are over 100 yards an i need all the help i can get at thsat distance. thanks for any info todd.

The H&R Ultra Slugger is one of the best slug guns you can buy at any price. I'd say the best but I haven't shot them all. It's the best I've ever shot and I've shot a bunch of them. And when you consider the fact they are $300, it's a no brainer. I know guys that have shot the 12 ga. version of the Ultra Slugger and most of them have since went out and bought the 20 ga. Get the 20 and don't look back. It's flatter shooting and the 240 gr. bullet is plenty. Would you rather have 5 fast shots or 1 good one? There are four of us that shoot them in the group I run with and every one of those guns will shoot 1 inch groups at 100 yards.

I like mine so well I just bought the Ultra Varminter in .223 and it shoots awesome too. They are nice, tight, compact little units. Maybe a bit heavy but that just helps them hold good. Can't beat 'em.

Nice Buck!!

Mike,

Congrats on a nice buck. Will make for some nice meals this winter.
Looking @ all these deer is starting to give me the itch.....
Spend so much time with the hounds doesn't leave much time for other interests.

Thanks Jim! I got allot of nice meat off him...we love a crock pot of venison stew on a cold winter day. I hear you...it's very hard to coon hunt, deer hunt, and bird hunt all at the same time of the year. I tend to let the hounds sit through October and November (might take out a couple of times) so I can focus on harvesting my deer and birds. Are you able to run your hounds through the winter months? How are they doing?
