research shows that bare minimum protrin dhould be at 21 percent and thats just for maintenance.
research also shows that dogs need protrin that comes from meat rather than cereal grains they also say corn is hard to digest and a dog will pass whatever they can't digest.
from my own experience my hounds will not maintain condition when hunted on grain based food and they also eat less of the meat based foods and have a lot more endurance when pushed hard.
the first three ingredients listed are the main ingrediants of the food.i have also noticed there is a lot more clean up required with a meat based food so if a dog does more on less you actualy save money money feeding a better food because the dog eats less saving you money.

i don't feed many....

hounds and seldom keep more than three. however, i have fed pedigree, iams, eukanuba, diamond, coonhunters pride, black gold and more i can't recall. i always have a hound in top shape and looking their best. no one can argue different. and i've put ALOT of them back into shape. nothing touches Purina to me. i even find the different purina choices to be interesting as well. namely pro plan to purina one. i'm currently feeding pro plan large breed puppy to an older female due to whelp shortly. she looks and feels great! and her puppies will be raised on this feed till they leave here. cost is @ $32.00 for a 37.5# bag. there is very little stool and it is solid. when i went off for a short time, i saw more stool and weight loss and i was feeding purina one??!! LOL! i've used walmart maximum performance with excellent results and very reasonably priced. great for hounds not physiclly active.

we can all make a comment on all the different brands..but a good worming program, exercise and a good brand of feed will no doubt reward a "better bang for the buck".

i also feed twice a day and have always done this even when we hunted regular many years back. i don't feed with cold water either. warm in winter..a lil cooler in summer. i use yogurt, 2 tablespoons a day and have done this for a lil more than a year. it's cheap and goes a long ways. aids the digestive tract.

i add a teaspoon of cod liver oil and one pet tabs plus to current diet for bred gyp.

am i over doing? nope. they do look great! LOL! and they act great! LOL! and i'd say it works...

(taken directly from the Arkat Feed site. Arrows">>>>" added by me)

"There are more brands of pet foods in the market today then there are cereal brands or baby foods. So how do you know what to buy for your pet? Here are three simple rules to help you in your decision process:

>>>>>>>1) Read the label, specifically the ingredient listing. The number one ingredient should be a meat based product. You may be surprised to find out that the largest selling brands are "corn" based formulations. Almost all grocery brands and mass merchandiser brands are corn based.

>>>>>>>>2) Look at what kind of meat protein is on the label. Chicken based products are better that meat-and-bone meal or beef-and-bone meal. Chicken has less "ash" (the part of the meat-meal that cannot be digested by your pet) than other meat-meal protein sources.

3) Look for the dominate vegetable source. Soy is high protein but not easy for some pets to digest. No Soy formulations are best. Rice is a great nutrient provider and easy for both dogs and cats to digest.

We understand that each animal requires different nutrients depending on his or her lifestyle. That's why we worked hard to develop a line of quality products to fit evety need. Our VF Complete line of Veterinarian Formulated products provides a complete and balanced diet, and each formula is carefully processed with just the right combination of nutrients to handle specific dietary needs. We offer performance products that surpass grocery-brand formulations with our Enhance line of pet feed.

We produce a complete line of pet food for both dogs and cats through all stages of life. We would like you to try our products. The Dealer Locator will find the closest outlet. You can also contact us direct to receive more information.

Visit your vet for regular checkups to ensure the health of your pet.

VF Complete
Total nutrition for every stage of your pet’s life.

Enhance
Performance at a competitive price.

----------------------------------------------------------------

SPORTMiX agrees completely. That is why we have TWO Meats and NO Bone Meal.

We use Meat to generate the Protein Number in order to minimize the impact of what Arkat is cautious of: The Dominate Vegetable Source. Thereby making it, the vegetable, a Non-issue.

$15 - $17 for 50#.

If you would like, call me and I will buy you a bag myself! If you are in Alabama of course! lol

Bluebag

I have fed sportmix. It is a good feed. However, it does not seem to hold weight on my dogs. I fed 5 cups per dog of sportmix to 3 cups per dog of enhance to get the looks and weight I like on my dogs. It is also more cost efficient for me. I can drive 3 miles to get enhance as opposed to 15 miles to get sportmix.

i also get pride. you can't beat the price, and the protien and fat content is great. it really makes the dogs coats glossy.

Guess I'll take my turn to kick the stiff pony around a bit. I used to be a diehard diamond fan. Fed it for about 6 yrs with no problems at all. Have always had good looking hounds with the maintenance yellow bag till right before Christmas. I just didnt like the way my dogs were looking on it and switched to the Sportmix 24/20 black bag. It took about 2 weeks for them to slick back up and gain their weight back. All dogs with white fur is a bright white instead of a dingy color it was getting before. For my dogs they have actually been eating less and still gaining or keeping the weight on. The "leftovers" on the ground have been cut in half. You couldnt fill a shot glass with what my beagles leave behind in a days time. I am not sure what changed in their feed but I do know that the last few bags I bought went from having a nice dark reddish brown color to looking like very weak tea. Not just one but all my dogs started getting loose so to speak. Carried them to the vet and said just simply change feeds cause whatever I was feeding just wasnt working even thought it was the same as I have been feeding for yrs. I did and it was day and night in a couple weeks time. I had heard from several coonhunters and beaglers around here that they really liked the sportmix and suggested I give it a try and so far so great. I know each dog is different but for me the sportmix has been the best bang for my buck and I hope it stays that way.

RedMan,

You said:

"I am not sure what changed in their feed but I do know that the last few bags I bought went from having a nice dark reddish brown color to looking like very weak tea. Not just one but all my dogs started getting loose so to speak."

Is that the SPORTMiX Product you are referring to or the Diamond?

TIA

Kent
