Smoke

Took Smoke out for a round tonight. Cast him off an old woods road into an Oak and Cyprus bottom with lots of water in there. He went in 250 yrds and struck a cold track and went to work on it. He kept it moving and the track gradually got better. You could tell he was in a lot of water. The coon finally left the bottoms and headed into the pines. Smoke was really putting a lot of pressure on the coon when he hit those pines, I was having trouble keeping up with him on the Garmin. about 300 yrds into the pines. I heard Smoke locate and I knew it was the end of that coon track. I went around to the other side and came in through a deer plot and Smoke was treed about 50 yrds out in the pines and I was able to ride through the pines and the underbrush and go right up to the tree. When I stopped and got off the 4-wheeler, about 3 feet in front of me was the bones of an 8 point buck that someone had shot within the last couple of years and never found it. The horns and skull were still in good shape. I'll take it over to the land owner tomorrow. I saw the coon as I was riding into the tree, before I found the deer. I walked on into where Smoke was treed up a big pine. I found the coon again and knocked it out to Smoke. It was one of the biggest Boar coons I have seen in a while. I loaded up Smoke and the coon and the deer skull and horns and we made our way back out of the pines and called it a night.

Sounds like Smoke made a full recovery. Thats good news, I really didn't think he would after a fall like he had.

Smoke

Tommy, we have started back hunting Smoke regularly now and he is doing fine, thanks for the well wishes.

Blueme, Smoke has only sired 3 litters of pups at this time. None of them are in S.C. that I know of.

SNOW

Mr. Jack, you need any help digging out from the Blizzard we had? Lol! We got a lot here and enjoyed it but its time for it to Melt and warm up so I can get back to hunting regular again. Hope all is well over your way and that you didn't loose power. We got lucky and power stayed on here but a few thousand in this county and Pike wasn't so lucky. Take Care.

Congrats to Bill and Dutch. A fine Team.

Snow

It's pretty and all that, but us people here in Mississippi just aint set up for it, Especially as much as we got a couple of days ago. It started snowing Thursday night and it snowed till 12: oclock Friday. I walked out on the porch Friday morning while it was snowing, It sounded like a war going on in the woods with all the trees and limbs breaking. I know it will be a mess when I get back to hunting. I just got electricity back on about 6: oclock tonight. It has been off since Thursday morning.

Steve, I was one of the few thousand, I was out of power for about 48 hrs. I'm still going to get with you and take around soon. Take care.

Scott good to hear from you, Hope you are having some good hunts. Take care.

Sure glad it didn't snow here. I don't like feeding cattle in the snow & ice. We had a major ice storm about 10 years ago. It took 5 years for the limbs to rot down in the timber to make walking close to normal.

Family Coonhunt

We had a good hunt tonight. My brother Tom and his 2 grandsons Braden and Taylor came down and hunted with me. They are twins and don't ask me which is which, because I was calling them the wrong names all night. Tom use to hunt a lot, but family and other obligations pulled him away. He still likes to go and see the hounds work. We took Sheba 11 out tonight. We treed one in a den tree, so the boys didn't get to see a coon, but they said we would do it again soon.

Elmo, it would have been real easy if I wasn't such a dummy when it comes to computers, thanks for yours and Steve's help.

Smoking Guns, I will probably be making a cross sometime in 2018. I'm not sure yet what it will be.

LOOKING BACK THROUGH THE YEARS

During these Holidays My mind drifts back to earlier years. The female with me in this picture is among those in my memory. Although at the time of this picture, probably back in the early 60s, she was in her later years, but she was one of the hardest going females that I have ever hunted with. although I had coonhunted from the time I was just a child. She was the first Registered dog that I had walked onto the woods with. She played a major role in my coondoogs then and still does to this day. Her name was Ch.Nite Ch."PR" Pearl River Blue Ruby. Although I owned her in her later years. At the time I first started hunting with her. She belonged to one of my best friends and the man that started me in the compeitiion hunts. Mr. Woodrow Williamson of Monticello Ms. Ruby's Sire was Nite Ch."PR" Burnthornes Blue Tracy. Her Dam was "PR" Butler's Kate

Sheba 11

Took Sheba 11 out for a little run tonight. She hit a cold track and worked it for about 300 yrds and locked down on this Den Tree. I could see the hairs around the hole where the coon had gone in. I thought it was suppose to be warmer tonight, but it didn't seem like it to me. There was still ice on the slough.

Thanks Bill and Dennis for the congrats on Smoke's 4th Nite Ch. win. Jeremy has Smoke at a State handler of the year hunt tonight. A young friend of Jeremy's is going to handle Smoke tonight. I can't remember the young guys name, but I will put it on here later. I love to see these young guys getting involved in the hunts and coonhunting. Smoke has won most of his casts, but a lot of times another cast comes in with a few more points, but that's just competition hunting.

Cold and Smoke

Mr. Jack,

Congratulations with Smoke sounds like you have another nice one!! The Tramp pups are doing well as they are now coming on 6 months old. Good looking and acting with some really nice mouths. The male I kept out of Tramp and Creek sure takes after both of them and he is going to be a nice size and up on legs like Mom and Dad. Sure glad I got my young prospects in areas were they wont have the extended cold like we get some winters although it has been cold all over the country. I think I went through $1000 of propane already this Winter. But other than that we sure like living in the old farmhouse that our family has lived in for 4 generations now.
I think we are going to get out hunting tonight and not because I think the coon will be moving but we are sick of sitting in the house!

You take care and stay warm,
Scott
