Guided my first hunt last night ... cha class .... tough night, pretty windy, very dry, tough tracking .... had a coon cross tote road in front of us in to a corn field, we stopped, cut the dog ...... never treed a coon .... bad guide I guess ... Steve

Timmy and I hunted little Rooster by his self last night . Like Zeke he got real birdie a time or two but never opened on track. The first dump after he got worked up on something we saw a possum come out of the corn and he checked it out but never opened which made me happy.
Second dump we cast him right on top of two deer and he just went on down the creek hunting like they werent there. Kept a close eye on the garmin and he worked the creek for about 600 yrds then cut to a corn field and took it along the creek another 300 yrds without opening on anything, caught him and went home.
Two nights ago he opened and ran a good runner in the corn and treed with style. Since he was by hisself that one came out dead.

Steve, keep Zeke in the timber he will turn it on before long.

Yea this was his first solo attempt. He had been looking real good with my other dogs. He just needs to get his confidence level up on his own ... needs to hit that "Hot" track ... and he should do fine ........ Steve

Took Smoke to the vet and he has an infection in the lower part of his leg where that female got a hold of him on tree. The vet said that it would take three to four weeks to heal if he cut it out, and the antibiotics would mess up his guts, if we were planning on hunting him in competiton he wouldn't perform well. He will heal on his own and we can give him ibprofen to reduce the pain. Sad part is the vet said the swelling may never go entirely away but he should be fine.
We had him look at his back leg and Smoke pulled a tendon on his hock but should be ok after a few days rest. He said we would just have to keep an eye on it.
Guess we will work on pups pretty hard for a few days while Smoke is on the mend.
May have to break out the old dog (Rooster II) if it cools down. At 11 he still goes too hard and he needs cooler weather.

We got them ok!hutch said they was buck wild. They never had a collar or leash on them. Well we got them leading pretty good today they did good considering they green as grass my dark male has a big cow lick on back of his head and neck. Im told thats a trade mark of the mad dogs? Think im gone like him. My buddy is going to get the lighter colored one. ill get some pictures of them up when we get home.

Had Zeke out tonight for his 2nd solo hunt, made 3 drops.
First drop was the best ... he worked along a corn field edge next to the woods ... started acting pretty coonie, he worked up in the corn a ways, then down in to the woods ... he checked out 3 differant trees then headed back towards the corn and opened twice ... then went back to one of the three trees he had checked and fell treed. Pretty excited tree he was convinced thats where the coon was .... man does he tree nice. kind of a mixture of long chops and a quivering bawl. I checked over the tree as best I could, but could only see about 80% of it .... didnt see the coon but cant swear one wasnt there. So I'm not sure if he was right or not. Second two drops he never struck so we came home.

All in all it was ok all things considered. Will try again tomorrow night ....... Steve .... ps: I got a feeling he might be a pretty quiet dog until the track is hot. we'll see ... that could change a lot yet.

Hang in there...... He'll start opening up more on track as the confidance grows.
The corn is coming down fast around here don't think there will be much left by the season opener.....

Zeke does open more when hunted with other dogs but he isnt real vocal on track ... but can sure make noise on tree with or without other dogs! Are they taking the corn out already over there by you? Emmy is doing good! She is sure a live wire! We are gonna start taking her out with the other dogs as soon as they are off the disabled list ....Steve

From the bottom of my heart I want to say THANK YOU for selling me such an exceptional pup. My John II pup Zeke did a wonderful job tonight ...
My daughter Nicole, my grandson Ivan and I Took Zeke out for a quick run tonight we left at 8:15 ... home by 9:30 .... Zeke winded the coon while still on the tailgate ... tracked exceptionally well (Much more vocal tonight) ... crossed a creek and treed ... tonight I heard his changeover for the first time... choked down, quivering bawl ... then a nice mixture of chops and quivering bawl on tree. ......... And he had the coon!
This was only Zeke's third solo hunt, and I am very very happy. Now I just gotta keep him going and give him time to hone his skills ... I'm Smiling! .... Steve

PS: we did get some pics of him on tree, I will post as soon as I can ....
