Sheba 11
A vetenary friend of mine talked to me the other day and told me since deer season was over he wanted me to come down to his place and get rid of some of his coons, so I loaded Sheba up tonight. I went kind of late to let the traffic die down as he lives pretty close to a high way. I didn't really know remember much about the place. I use to hunt in there probably 30 years ago and a lot changes in that length of time I dropped her off an ole woods road towards Greens Creek. She went in almost to the creek, went down it a ways and made a circle and came back. I loaded her up and went on down farther and cast her on the other side of the road away from the creek. She went in about 100 yrds and struck a cold track, worked it a little in there and got it lined out and headed toward the river, which was probably about a mile away. I didn't know where all the roads were so I started looking for a way to keep me within hearing of her. She had it running now and was sounding good. I followed an ole woods road that went across a field and thru a section of woods into another field. When I got to the field, it was probably at least a 75 acre field and she was in the woods on the other side, close to 300 yrds away, I could hear her good and I just sat there and listened to her work. About the time she got to the corner of the field she gave that long dying bawl of hers and I knew that was the end of the trail. I followed a fire lane around to another corner of the field and turned and went down the other side to the corner of the field where she was treed. She was treed probably 75 yrds out in the woods from the fire lane. I got my rifle and walked in to her. She was treed up a big oak. I took a couple pictures and started looking for the coon. It was pretty thick in there and I'm pretty sure it had a hole in the tree. I looked for a couple of minutes and didn't see anything, but when I hit the squaller he looked at me from up toward the top. I knocked him out and Sheba finished him. We had had a good hunt, so much to Sheba's disappointment we called it a night.
Codykennels, Thank you for the info on the hounds out of Lake and the kind words about him. Lake was a good hound and like you said about the ones out of him. He was the most accurate tree dog that I have ever hunted. The Sheba female in the picture above is out of a daughter to Lake. Thank you for posting, come back anytime.
