This is going to all the young kids and young men that follows what I believe in when it comes to owning your own pup and getting it to learn to tree a coon in the wild. Gonna be a bit blunt but I'll get straight to the point. When one gets that certain pup to start,I see on this board the ? asked on what one should do to start! Well,I'm gonna tell you and some might agree or disagree but if one likes what comes from this kennel there's a reason! I see asked all the time on this board what to do with a young pup and always see the same responce. Teach it to come when called and take it for walks in the woods! Teach it to heel!Wrong by my standards with what one should do!! When one gets a pup some tell them to teach to come and heal at a very young age and start at that time to control the pup. Wrong move,hounds are born to hunt not to become pets or lap dogs on down the road. If one chooses that way,you going backwards from my point of view!! Again,JMO! Bond with the pup comes into play when one feeds and takes care of it until it's time to start training it. If you create a bond that can't be sepperated without issues before it starts to run and tree coons that ties that pup to stay by you,your off to a bad start. Hounds are bred to hunt thier game thier bred for and I think we can all agree on that. What one doesn't realize at a young age is that you and I can put a different outcome in the pups mind without even realizing what one has done before it's to late! I never teach a pup to come to me nor do I teach one to heel until after that pup has treed 20 coon on it's own. By doing so,the pup has full freedom and no ceratin outcome from being controlled is forced upon that pup from me. I get a kick on how everyone says to take them for walks in the woods and let them explore only to see that the pup is always within sight and when the time comes and they start the pup,he doesn't want to go hunting! Yes,that's what happens believe it or not. I have calls all the time from guys that want to know how to get a pup to go hunting better. Well'it starts from the beginning wether one wants to believe it or not. Yes,it might be bred into them to go hunting but at a young age one can certainly alter the pups mind unknowingly! When one doesn't want to go hunting by ones self and checks back in 5 or 10 minutes later,here's what you do profiding the pup knows how to track and tree a coon and is that far along!! Take the pup to a likely place he isn't likely to strike a track for a few hundred yards and your certain he or she will check back in before striking a track. At that time,all one has to do is get off the lazy behind and start walking away from the pup 300 or 400 yards or so and extend the pups time returning back to you. The key is to walk towards you know where the pup would come across a track before meeting back up with you. If that pups strikes a track and trees before showing back up,you just to a point trained that pup! You defered the outcome of it coming back to soon! Plain and simple! Like it or not!I'm tellin ya,if that pup will run and tree an easy coon and just doesn't want to get out,this will work and call it what ya want,it's changing the outcome so I call it training! Been busy at the shop so when I get back home,take care of the pups and momma I'll explain what I do with a litter to break them to the gun shot. Pretty simple and doesn't take alot of time. To those that follow what I do let me explain something real quick. What I say on here when it comes to raising and starting pups is nothing more than what has worked for me over many years of doing it and as most know,I take starting pups very serious and to heart. If one chooses to try what I do on some things I post,It's always gonna be your choice. I always start them by themselves with no help from an older hound and believe that's key,some do different. Don't know if my memory is that good. Let me just say this,thier are more than a couple stud dogs being bred today that came from this kennel with me starting them or purchasing at a young age and hunting them. Got them around 6 months old or so. It's been awhile since I have owned what I call a top hound that suited me enough to still be here. Since I sold Gauge,I haven't truly found the right one. Sold some awful nice young hounds along the way that guys really like but it takes that special hound for me to want to push hard across this great country we live in. If and when I do find such,I certainly will know it at a young age. Might have that one now but hasn't been hunted enough by me and to young to say. Gauge was very young, 8 months old when I got him from Danny Perez. Started and was treeing coons and split treeing from Betty. Never hunted by hisself if I'm thinkin right. Could be wrong tho! When I got him home,he certainly had to learn some things as all young pups do and he certainly was tweaked along the way. So was Jet 8 after I purchased half interest in him from Bob Kennedy. Soon's I got him to the kennel,he holed the next night and was tweaked at that time. He got in one other hole 3 nights later, tweaked again and never seen him in another there after nor did I ever see him tree a grinner. Broke him on both and same with Gauge.I think regardless of who it is when I comes to getting a hound to the highest level,one has to be worked along the way. JMO!! Later,Danny G.

of course there are a few things that most anyone does to make a hound a lil straighter or tighter etc. There is times when we call it tuning or tweaking one some. In reality they can only become as good as their genes will allow them. it is a given that a dog with great ability wont get to be a top hound by sitting on a chain most of the time.

the fact is, top hounds train us and teach us what a dog should do.

What trash first? The one that seems to be the trash of choice. If the young dog is looking for deer to run then deer breaking. It just doesn't seem like trash is a real issue. Certain lines of hounds don't run much junk. I have hunted a few that one or two mild corrections is all that was needed. Lots of hunting and a few raccoon was the training program.

im gonna back track here a little. on the main page of this forum there is a thread on how many coon to give a dog. I believe that is one aspect where we as owners come into play to get a dog looking its best. finding out how many coon a certain hound needs dropped down to it in order to get it operating at its peak. Also, I have never seen anything on this board about feeding times and consistency. All performance animals and humans stick to a highly routine plan and schedule. This is something that will help give you a edge when you start hitting the road imo.

with that said, some are so good at what they do that you cant mess them up..........

Do the walkers hounds win because they have what it takes or are they trained to do so! Simple ? just answer it yes or no! We all talk about how they tree slick and so how do they win so many big hunts! Money to pay them off,or good but can be beat! U tell me! I'm all ears!! Danny G.

actually the big winning walkers (there is more turd eating walkers then any other breed also), more times then notare owned or hunted by 2-3 different men in different parts of the country to get the acclimated to all different types of terrain and coon populations.

A coondog. Sure there are plenty of titled dogs that win major hunts that are the real deal. However, there are plenty more big name hounds that would be far from pleasurable to hunt or worthless to the vast majority of hunters. Some are just down right counterfeit. I don't have any use for a dog that leaves barking, blows the country or is 40% accurate but can get treed 10 times in a two hour hunt and keep the cast tied up searching empty leafy trees. More often or not this is the dog that win a cast.

Hendrix Motor Sports can sure build a car but it would not be my choice or fit the bill for my hunting vehicle. This reasoning is why there will never be an overall agreement on what a top hound is, not to mention what it takes to train one.

Been busy at the shop and taking care of momma and the pups. For those that asked.I'll explain how I gun break pups before they are 9 weeks old. One thing,I don't starve puppies to get my point across to them. As most know that follow what I do here at the kennel or if one has forgot it,I've always stated that as a litter,pups are always bolder when they have the numbers factor on thier side. Therefor,boldness in numbers and thru hunger drive,pups can be gunbroke with very little time spent by the breeder if they choose to do so which of course I prefer to do. It's very simple and it all starts when one starts to feed them mush. I start mine at 3 weeks old and the only thing that is required at first is simply listening to the pups. By this time,momma is spending more and more time away from the pups and she needs that time to herself. I help her out by putting a board across the house opening so the pups can't get out and bother her. When she wants to be with them,it's done on her time and when she wants to feed them. With momma tied up inside the whelpin kenneel so I can feed the pups it's the perfect time to get started.I use 2 large baking pans to feed the mush in. The first couple days,I do nothing more than get the pups attention by talking to them. Because momma's spending less time with them,thier all hungry. With a pleasant voice I call to them and they get wound up. At this time I simply put the mush in the pans on the floor on the inside of whelpin kennel floor and set the pups done to get them to start eating the mush. At three weeks,they eat it pretty well but in 2 or 3 days of being fed mush,they are really going at it. When that time comes,I simply get thier attention by calling to them and start to bang the pans together as they carry on knowing thier food is here. I talk to them and bang both together lightly to start but always listening to the pups inside the whelping box. The pups tell me what to do and how much! Just listen and learn. Soon you find the pups relating to the banging of the pans without having to call and talk to them first.The pans loud bangs tells them it's feeding time,at this time you are real close to having them gun broke but I keep on till they get older.Once I get them out to the big puppy pen at 5 weeks old,I'll continue to feed soaked up food and along with that dry food in the self feeders. Keep listening to the pups and start banging them pans before I get to the pup pen. The sound brings them to the fence and I'll go in and feed them.I've made my feeders that hold 50 lbs. of dry feed so I can close them off at any time for my likings. I have 2 of them in the pup pen. By being able to close them off helps alot with what I do with them when I start to haul them at a young age, keeps pups from getting sick in the box and aids in gun breaking. At 7 weeks,I use the self feeders to get the rest done. Simply closing them of and limiting thier time to eat.Now it's simply a blank gun with low powered caps to start with and the pans are gone. I night I'll close of the feeders and open them back up later in the day and yes they'll be hungry so as the see me coming I start talking to them and now,the calling and blank gun shots come into play. Thier hungry,you're calling them,the shots go off and thru hunger drive you finish getting them gun broke. Biggest asset you have is boldness thru thier numbers at this time. Fact! Soon,just the gun shot itself brings them running but you always have to listen to the pups and reply to what they are telling you. At times,it could take a bit longer but listen and learn from them. At nine weeks,the pups are use to the shots being fired and doing great with it. This is a numbers game I use and never tried it with a single pup so take it from there. Some may think gun breaking pups isn't needed at a young age,I do and till this day,never got a phone call from someone that got a pup from me saying it was gun shy. This also does great with the bonding to humans and they gain trust in you real fast! To each thier own,Danny G.

Since most breeders do not do this I have to break pups individually using the same concept. There is a little variation but the concept is the same. Gun shot equals food reward.

Thanks! When people buy and pay good money for a nice bred pup from me,least I can do is give them my full attention to the pups before they leave this kennel. That's another reason I prefer to keep that litter together until thier 9 weeks old is by that time,thier broke to gun shot. With that being said,I wouldn't suggest the new owner take his pup and start blasting away long rifle shells out of a pistol right beside them,one has to be smarter than that. These blanks aren't real loud but effective enough at this young age to get the job done!! Just aids in the success with getting that part done and I'm a firm believer in when one seperates them from thier littermates before they are 9 weeks old,one does more harm than good. That's just again my own opinion and I try and stick to it. Also,I just don't feel good about letting a pup go knowing that it has had only one 5 way shot with parvo in them. At nine weeks,they get the 2nd. Not saying that letting them go at 6 weeks old is wrong,just not what I prefer to do! Why change when it has worked for me for years.
