I agree that competition hunts helped us achieve some of the good qualities that we have but the rules didnt keep up with the hounds abitilities. Now we have reached a plateau and unless something happens I dont see hunts as being the measuring stick that we need.

The oldest and best measuring stick that I know of is meat in the tree. That measure of course is open to interpretation. I saw a magazine in the doctor's office (I cannot remember which one it was) with an article on coons. Specifically, they did a study about how coon can insert themselves into really tight and small spaces. You cannot imagine an animal of that size fitting into spaces that small. It had pictures to prove the point. The point is that probably we get more den trees or hole trees than any of us really trully understand. The big Beech tree with the coon scat stacked at the base is easy. The tree with a very small hole in it may hold a coon as well. I guess the answer is confirmed meat in the tree. Den or hole trees should not be counted.

The bigger real answer is to reinvigorate the fur trade wherein people can get good money for furs.

Mr. Starke, I have a full littermate to your Tom dog that I bought from Don Lesher a few months ago. I was wondering how Tom was progressing. I like my female pretty good so far, she does well on a hot track but is taking a while to get adjusted to all the water we have in the swamps of NC. She is a beautiful dog, she has been in two shows and has two best of shows with competition. I think with time and some hard hunting she will be fine. Thanks in advance and have a good day.

Tom is a fast trackdog that runs a track to catch. Bawl on track and hard chop on tree. Loud mouth and gives according to track. Trees on the tree, but will back up if aggressive dogs want the tree. Hunts deep to strike if needed, but does have reverse. He was a natural to start. He ran and treed on the first coon I turned him loose on that crossed the road. I have points on the bench. He has good feet, but his toenails were llong and I have been trimming them as often as I can. He'll finish when I get him right. Looking forward to coon season to finish him. What are you going to breed your female to? I would be interested in a pup from the right cross. Good Hunting

Robert, I could not ask for a better looking female than Peebles. She finished to show champion in three shows with three best of shows with competition. I plan on breeeding her to my Grand Nite champion, he goes back to Finley River Dan 5 times on the top side and goes back to Tar Heel Henry and Mercahnt's Tree Blaster on the bottom. I plan on breeding her the next time she comes in heat, if you would like a pup just let me know. Take care and God bless.

I'v hunted with Rickie and Lead for the last 10 yrs. Old Lead was a *Coon Dog*. He"d tree more cold coon on the outside than any dog I'v seen in the last 10 yrs. One of the best track dogs I'v ever hunted in my 50 yrs of coon hunting. Would like to hear more of your pups out of old Lead. Told Rick to keep one of them.

I am not smart enough to post pictures on here. There are pictures of Sam on two different websites. Travis Brittian who goes by Bullet on here has a picture of him on his website. I don't remember the website address, but if you do a search of the posts made by Bullet, go to the bottom and click on www and it will carry you to his website, scroll down to the bottom and click on page 2 and you will see a picture of Sam. Also my friend Chris Brown has a picture of Sam on his website www. shonuffkennels.com. Go to the coonhound males page and there is a link that will carry you to a page that has a picture of Sam and his 3 generation pedigree there. If you have any trouble finding these pictures, let me know I will get somebody to post some on here for me. Thanks for your interest in Sam and I hope you have a very blessed day.

Keith that one was taken up North (LOL). I am just fantasizing, since I can't get any hunting in over here. I may start a Fantasy Coonhunting Leauge. How is everything going in your part of the country? Well take it easy.
