Antennas

Hi Shane, If you ever make a Astro antenna, send me one.
I have tried too many antennas to count on my Garmin Astros, everytime I saw something new that was compact, had the right connector I bought one, reason is from day one I was very disappointed in range. Anyone that hunts with me or comes to our hunts will tell you I always have some kind of new gimmick antenna trying it out.
I do disagree with some that the length does not matter, if it had no difference why did Garmin give longer antenna with 320 ?
I live & hunt in steep mountains so I feel that TERRAIN & DENSITY of area you are at dictates range more than antenna length. Flat, open land have better range & signal than here.
Here is some of my obsevations;
On the 220 with the original antenna, I gould get 600/900 yards consistant, 100+/- more yds with the folding metal antenna, maybe 200 +/- more yds with a longer rubber antenna, now I have a folding hand antenna (Not Garmin) that fits in my pocket with a BNC/SMA connector that I made that blows all of them away, but it cant be carried on the Garmin all just the time (Yet)
Now for the 320, better range to start with, so I have not tried but about a half dozen after market antennas. I use a long (14") rubber antenna all the time, not a lot more range, but not as much losing signal of the small Garmin ant. I still bring out the
home made folding ant. if needed. This next observation proves how lazy I am, or thoughtful (HeHe) but the best thing about the longer aftermarket antenna is I do not lose signal in the truck near as much as with the short ones.
Sorry to ramble on, but one more thing, the Garmin Astro antennas have a little shoulder that goes in the bottom of the connector port, so I found a very small rubber washer helps with the aftermarket antennas being a snug fit.
Now for collars, The 2 DC 30 that I have are 2 yrs old, & the longer ant. helps them with a little more range & signal, the 2 DC 40 I got with the 320 have great range, so I have not tried aftermarket.
PM me with address & I'll buy one of your antennas.
David

Well, I meant to keep my word and was going to delete this thread....but apperantly the administrator has done something to it so that the author cannot delete his own thread....so I guess it will stay on here till they unlock it. I'd like to thank those who have posted their support and for all the pm's since I started this post. I will continue to further develop my ideas and designs for products that will be of use to hunters and houndsmen in the future. I wish I had time to answer everyone back but I am very busy right now. Happy holidays and best wishes everyone.....Shane Maxey

I have 2 of Shanes products, the banshee squaller, and the antenna's for the collars. I previously had aftermarket long range antennas that i bought at a hunt untill i got a couple from Shane. After trying them out the old ones went straight to the trash! I was getting .8 with them and now i get over 1.5 with the new ones. I love my products that i have purchased from shane and cant wait to get my hands on the antenna for the handheld. I'm not just saying all this cause Shane is a friend, but to give my honest oppinion that his products DO WORK! Keep up the good work Shane and keep those ideas a coming!

I just did a Direct Line of Site Check with a Brand new 320 and DC 40 all Stock and the Garmin had the small Antenna on it .. We have a large amout of Iron Ore that does have some Mag. Propertys to it and can play hell with a Metal Detector ..

It was Droping the Collar At Exactly 1000 yards no mater what direction with-in line of site I went , Each test I would come in to 700 yds then back out and 3 times it was 1000 yards exactly on the Drop ..

Has anyone who has been following this thread tried either a 1/4 wave antenna or a 5/8 wave antenna with a fold out ground plane? Something like a 16" firestick with four 8-10 inch ground plane rods radiating from the base that can fold up along side the main antenna mast when not in use? Has anyone experimented with any other types of foldable or compact ground planes? If so, would be interested in hearing if it helped and how much it helped....Thanks.....Shane

The only experimenting I have done is with a 153 band with a loaded gain coil. It seems to do just a little better than the magnet Garmin antenna, but I figured that it was just the added height that gave me better range.
