Antennas
Hi Shane, If you ever make a Astro antenna, send me one.
I have tried too many antennas to count on my Garmin Astros, everytime I saw something new that was compact, had the right connector I bought one, reason is from day one I was very disappointed in range. Anyone that hunts with me or comes to our hunts will tell you I always have some kind of new gimmick antenna trying it out.
I do disagree with some that the length does not matter, if it had no difference why did Garmin give longer antenna with 320 ?
I live & hunt in steep mountains so I feel that TERRAIN & DENSITY of area you are at dictates range more than antenna length. Flat, open land have better range & signal than here.
Here is some of my obsevations;
On the 220 with the original antenna, I gould get 600/900 yards consistant, 100+/- more yds with the folding metal antenna, maybe 200 +/- more yds with a longer rubber antenna, now I have a folding hand antenna (Not Garmin) that fits in my pocket with a BNC/SMA connector that I made that blows all of them away, but it cant be carried on the Garmin all just the time (Yet)
Now for the 320, better range to start with, so I have not tried but about a half dozen after market antennas. I use a long (14") rubber antenna all the time, not a lot more range, but not as much losing signal of the small Garmin ant. I still bring out the
home made folding ant. if needed. This next observation proves how lazy I am, or thoughtful (HeHe) but the best thing about the longer aftermarket antenna is I do not lose signal in the truck near as much as with the short ones.
Sorry to ramble on, but one more thing, the Garmin Astro antennas have a little shoulder that goes in the bottom of the connector port, so I found a very small rubber washer helps with the aftermarket antennas being a snug fit.
Now for collars, The 2 DC 30 that I have are 2 yrs old, & the longer ant. helps them with a little more range & signal, the 2 DC 40 I got with the 320 have great range, so I have not tried aftermarket.
PM me with address & I'll buy one of your antennas.
David
