Hello stonehill - Paul Allmon was the one who owned Allmon's Sally, from what I remember of her she was a good sized female, seems like she was a open marked dog. I do remember that she had a good bawl mouth, as you would hear it when you pulled in the driveway over at Pauls, as she was also his house dog as she was normally running around loose around the house. My grandfather would hunt with Paul every so often, said she was a good dog to hunt with. Larry Tynes, think he's under westkyblackandtans on the black & tan board hunted with Paul, and might could tell more on the hunting part of Sally. I can remember she was a good natured dog, wouldn't get upset at all when Paul's daughters would try to turn her into a pony, she seemed to watch over the kids when ever they were outside. I know that my female and male that had her a greatgrandmother, reminded me of Sally by the way they would show up out of no where to save my butt more than once.
I think they told me that Paul had put her in a few hunts, but he seemed to like the swim races the best, as she could swim. Really it was probably due to the betting that was going on at the swims instead of a trophy, if the truth was known. He would do what ever it took to get the win, even if it involved giving her a pill to do it. It was one of those times that has stuck in my mind for years. He had doped her and the coon was going down the pond on the cable, the doors swung open the dogs leaped out toward the water, except for Sally, she was going in circles chasing her tail for all she was worth ! I heard some of them saying that Paul had overdone ol Sally that time ! I was reminded of that when my male was about 6 month old, and he started running circles chasing his tail, even taking his back leg in his mouth. I knew how many times old Sally was in him, first thought was maybe once to often, I had seem my old dogs make a couple turns in the past, but what I saw was what I had witnessed over 40 years ago. I have discovered what the trouble is when I see my dog doing the tail chasing, it was probably the same on her, it was a stomach ache, give him a pepto chewable tablet and it cured in just a few minutes.
Sally was bred to Jim Cox's dog in about 1967, the dog was named Deep River Bawling Bowser, I know that he was a good dog, and have seen his name on a few dogs pedigrees too. Jim had hunted him in the ACHA World Hunt, and had done good in it, I cannot remember if that was before or after Sally was bred, but that was how that Joel Dick became the owner of a pup named Kentucky Judy ! She was born over at Paul's house on top of the hill on Byrants Ford Road, at Bryant's Ford on the East fork of Clarks River. Pauls House burned, and he moved a few miles away, had some trouble and got out of that but was killed in a gun fight over gambling back in the 80's !
Kentucky Judy, was a hard hunting female, they said that she was one that could get deep quick and walk you to death. I think she was marked more by Bowser than Sally, but she did remind me of Sally a lot around Joel's house. As she didn't need to be chained up around there, she was normally seen laying on the porch or in the yard as she wasn't going anywhere. If she was put in a truck though, you would need to have your boots on as she was going hunting and she was going to be pulled off a tree somewhere. I know the dogs I started with was by a daughter to Kentucky Judy and House's Chief, his last litter. That was the litter before Judy was crossed on House's Tom Tom that produced the pup known as House's Clint and history was made. Judy was bred again to Tom Tom after that, but I don't think she had pups from it, but she would have been about 10 then.
So there is a little history about history, guess it's still going on as I still have some that has the same dogs in them that I started with 35 years ago.

Thanks, I was a hotwalker for Thoroughbreds as a kid. I saw a little of what a little too much can do. It caused me to stay away from drugs but not alcohol.

I have a schedule of what Sam and I loving call the "out law" water races over in AR. We have never been to one, as of yet, but they sound fun!!
We've raced with the greyhound crosses at St. Jude twice(2010 and 2011) and held our own pretty good. Got our picture took for taking the 3rd line and 3rd tree awards..This male is only about 55lbs soak-n-wet..
This year, his pup, pictured above, took 3rd tree(?) awards on Saturday.
Both years, they advanced all the way to the end on both days...We might not have gone home with the best awards, but we stayed in the game until the end and had a blast doing so!! We even had a couple of those greyhound guys ask if our pup was for sale..I just figured if they liked him, then we might just hang on to him a little longer and have just a little more fun with him

**If anyone is interested in that NON sanctioned ARK schedule, give me a shout and I'll send you the dates.

Wow I can't believe that rumor got way down there !!! Everything for the rest of this year is unchanged. Starting next year the club will be at a new location. I'm not exactly sure where its located ,but it's close to the old place and They WILL still have water races . I'm told the pond is much better than before, but I haven't seen it . Glad You are planning on Cole Camp ,sure will be nice to see You folks again !!!!!! CYa

Thanks for clearing that up...We really like Keytesville as well..That's a long haul for us, for one day, but I always put their event schedule on my "to do" calendar..It doesn't mean we'll make it, but that we want to!! Sometimes it works out and most of the time it doesn't...LOL

I love watching water races, and would swim hounds in them if we had the races.

In our area, they do a lot of races but they swim lurchers. I have never seen a coonhound water race and from what i can tell, few hounds would be able to swim with the light-built, big footed.big-lunged lurchers and beat them.

I have a couple hounds who would be competitive with other coonhounds, but not those big waterdogs around here!

On occasion, our hounds DO get to water race as lots of coons go to water around here, and the swim is on to get across the water and get the coon treed!

I recall at Lake Carlyle in Illinois a couple years ago, pleasure hunting with Paul Langdon and a bunch of the guys from his camp, a couple hounds swam across a little spur of the lake to tree a coon out on a little island. That was with water AND WAVES as the wind was blowing a storm in but those dogs never slowed down!111

Wildhounds

Hi , thanks for showing an interest in water raceing ! I'm sorry about Your being unable to find UKC water races in Your area. I don't know where You live but I suspect it may be ILL. if so then the races are there You just haven't found them.Check upcomeing events in Coonhound Bloodlines.Sometimes You have to drive further than You would like, but We all do it,it's just part of the game!
If You have local clubs that hold UKC hunts+shows with facility for water races but currently only haveing grade races it should be easy to get them to try UKC races!!! The first thing You do is join the club, and go to the meetings.Next You point out to them how UKC WR's would bring extra revenue. ( MONEY TALKS ) I know a lot of times around here the W.R. will have just as many entries as the show or hunt !Also point out that people drive much further to go to events that have W.R.'s but since they came for the W.R. they go ahead and show in the show, hunt in the hunt, enter the treeing contest, and spend lots of money that without the W.R. the club would never see !!! Good Luck !!! Your always welcome to come to MO. for our W.R.'s CYa

Hi Glen, I have noticed the same thing. Ain't it great !!! Does make it a lot harder to make a W.C. though. But the longer it takes the more fun to be had, and enjoying these ole hounds is what it's all about !!! This mchf state W.R. sure is exiteing don't You think ? CYa

S/S --?? Lurcher ??--

Hi , Here's what little I know, and it ain't much. Lurcher's can be seen in Full Cry mag. I think the term "Lurcher" refers to what a dog does rather than what breed it is. Kind of like the term"stockdog" could be any of several breeds or crosses.I think they are used to catch and kill various critters after small Terrier type dogs drive them out of holes, brushpiles, etc. Looks to Me like most of them are Greyhound/Whippet types with a shot of Pit Bull crossed in for killing power.
I hope someone corrects Me if I'm wrong ,but till They do this is what I think a Lurcher is. CYa

Hi, glad You like this thread !!! I agree that more clubs should have W.R.'s . Not only in ny but everywhere. There is a lot of difference in clubs. Some want to have lots of entries at their events from people both local and non-local,provide great entertainment for the entire family, and of course make money. You have a chance getting a club like this to consider water races. Unfortunately You also have clubs that do NOT want big entries. They see their club as a place to make their cheap champions. They love a two dog bench show, one to win, one for comp. entered by same man.A one cast hunt is also very desireable to these "good ole Boys" too for obvious reasons.A club like this does not want outsiders comeing in ruining their gameplan ! You have no chance getting water races in a club like this. CYa

Lurcher or Greyhound field trial dog

in Ohio and Indiana, Iowa and few in Illinois. These back in the 1940 clear thru up to about mid 1970's were your coon dog, mutt that would run a drag or tree breed up till they are now 7/8 greyhound for the most part and your open swim dogs followed suit just more hound in them. There are relatives of the great Tom Greaves dogs that I ran in the 1980's thru 1991 in swims as well as field trials. NO PIT BULL though those are hog dogs. There are also some of the 1980's dogs in the iditirod dogs interbred for speed. All came from the coon hounds. All breeds to. As racing changed from more specialized faster tracks less tracking more and more people quit. I takes 4-5 miles a day to train to run 1 mile track, you might have to run it 3 times in a day. That takes a major comitment just like the wild competion coonhunters dogs chasing them thru the woods night after night. I had the last field trial at Coles County club in 2005 I paid out $3400 in finals people from 9 states won. Never made a dime as that sport is about dead. Stick with your hounds boys and girls.

Jeff

I saw Your Charelston Ill. post, and I want to say You are really doing a great thing!!! I hope You get lots of help, cause there's always lots to do. If anyone on here dosen't know, Jeff is getting a long unused water race area back up and going so His club can start having UKC water races. If anyone lives in that area please give Him a hand. Good luck ,Jeff

There was a guy I think in New York that kept articles in Full Cry (I have not had that magazine since my squirel dog died) about using Dachsunds (spp) on a leash to blood trail deer. He was forevermore talking a bout a learcher. I was thinking it had some airdale init to grab whatever came out of the hole. LOts of German stuff was covered too.

Thanks Stonehill

Thanks Stonehill, Several of us are just trying to get it back like it was in the 1980' and before. Are main thing is UKC competion coon hunting and water racing is good to keep dogs in shape and adds another dimension to our hounds for the ones that like that. We went from a flat broke club to climbing our way back. We have some great club members and associates. there are several good clubs around here.

Here is to good hunting, Jeff

Lurcher

In the early days Airdale was mixed with coonhound, ever so often one of those fuzzy boys pops out today. Anything that would run a drag and win was mixed with coonhound. Therefore all these dogs were bred for extreme drive, tracking before 1990, after tracks became roads and 3/4 greyhounds took over in field trailing and all muzzles since about 1985. You have to remember Coon Hound Field trials have been held I know back to 1900's. That is a long time to bred for one purpose. Then is the late 1980's speed became more important than tracking and treeing and in my way of thinking was the beginning of the end of field trialing.
