The sounds coming out of an open hound totally fascinate me. When Frito is tearing up a hot track he lets out a unique little sound the very second he comes up against the base of a tree with coon scent on it. This sound is something like a super short quivering locate bark that sounds like he's putting on the brakes and the air is being pushed out of his lungs by deceleration. In the next second he quick checks the tree and then stands up on the tree and throws his big locate. A fast track dog with a big locate and you better have a trick up your sleeve to get those first tree points.

Frito sounds like his sire. Sweat is a track driving machine, if you have never hunted with him its worth the trip. I have seen him tree coons on 2-3 inches of ice at 3:00 in the morning, in the rain, or dry conditions it never seems to make a difference. He is just totally explosive on track or tree. It looks like Frito is the 2010 AKC state leader for ND. I believe he's held that spot three years in a row, and he won't turn four until April 2011. I'm proud of his accomplishments given what few hunts we enter. He also has to go up against a crew of real serious competitors to get it done.

Now hunting's been over for a month and the year is closing, I've been thinking about what things came together better for Frito as a three year old. I'd say last year as a two year old he really stepped up his hunting intensity and desire to go as deep as necessary to find a coon.

Now that he is three I'd say it was his ability to take on virtually all tracks as he found them and finish a high percentage of them them fast. When he was two he'd occasionally really bog down on a track and hang with it much longer than I'd like. I didn't log his tracks last year so I don't know for sure just how he performed. Seems there's always that one or two bad tracks that stick in your mind.

So this year I started keeping notes on the percentage of tracks he finished. It's actually pretty easy to monitor a dog now that the Garmin removes all doubt about his performance. If he struggled on a track and hushed up and moved on I marked it as an unfinished track.

My log shows that while he was in the woods alone, he started 164 tracks this year. Of those tracks, he finished 150 tracks to my satisfaction. That pencils out to 92%. As compared to the year before, this year I don't recall any bouncing back and forth on a track. This year I recall only a few times when I'd liked him to move off a bad track a little sooner but was happy see on the Garmin that when a track would break down he'd start to run circles around the area he lost it and about the third time around he pack up and be gone. I suppose you could say he just learned how to sort his tracks. I'm sure a little of that is true but remember he is wide open on track and I think his mouth would give him away every time he came across a coon track. He has a strike bawl that is similar to a tree locate and I know he's throwing it before he's figured out which way to take the track.

I found when he'd leave a bad track you had to attach the truck antenna to the Garmin because a bad track usually meant it was a bad night for coon movement and he was pissed and not going to stop running until he could sit under a coon.

Onward to 2011...I can hardly wait to see his improvements next year.

Here's Tucker, the runt of the litter. Look at the legs under this pup, dark red color, and long ears that wrap around his nose. He's my backup pup and has a loud, clear horn mouth you don't often find on a dog. I don't think he's quite as ready to start as the other pups and will give him more time to mature. I've heard him tree varmints in the yard (has the hard double chop of his sire) and he has the potential to be my favorite in the litter.

Frito at 9 months old, cast all alone into the woods on a cold January night, treed with a coon looking down.

And I didn't shoot this coon.

I never shot out more than 1 coon a month for him right from the beginning of his career. He just didn't need them for motivation, and still doesn't.

Frito at 8 months old, alone in the woods and treed with a coon over a half mile from the place I dropped him.

I left this coon in the tree too.
