I hope you guys dont think that since i say my dog is cold nosed that she gets on tracks and boo;s and bangs, cause she dont. She drifts a track in and out, picks it up here and there, opens here and there and trees the coon...But I aint gonna believe for one second that some of you guys that have never seen a cold bad track is because your dog has the best nose in the world.I see that in the stud adds all the time, put some tracking back in your kennel and you look at the pedigree and it comes from dogs that are known for its tree power. Im not saying you all dont have a good track dog, but Im not buying that you dont know what a cold track is. If you dont its cause your dog cant smell it, or your just not being honest with yourself. I really want some of you guys to bring your boots and hat and come down and hunt with me so I can see these fine track dogs in action and so they can make some of these cold tracks i been dealing with look like it should be a pop up tree job.

HILLBILLY, you're right and i'v been around hounds almost as long as you. a coondog is a coondog point blank, either pleasure or competition.

i hunt the hunts once in a while, mostly major ones. i hunt 4-7 nights aweek cause i love the woods, hearing dogs strike and tree and having those coons. to me theres nothing more enjoyable than coonhunting and listening to the dogs work. i have a pretty good dog or i would'nt feed it and he's only been in a couple of casts. i hunt a dog that trees coon not trees. i hate these babbling slick treeing idiots now days. i'm not afraid to cut him loose anywhere, anytime or with anybody. there's guys that came here lately from two different states as well as out of towners here in ohio, they know that i hunt a COONDOG !!! i know exactly where you're coming from my friend. mine does'nt blow through the country, he strikes his coon as he comes to them, he can tree one 200yds. or 800yds. he trees coon that others don't know exist. he's wipeout, lipper and homers gomers bred !!!

i dont have a very good track dog now. i used to have one. she's dead now so i dont know if she actually was as good as i remember. she could flat move any track she hit. she lacked a lot in tree power tho.

NOTHIN AGAINST A TITLED DOG OR A UN TITLED DOG

yrs ago a mans pleasure dog was his comp dog and vise versa. titled or not they were real deal "COONDOGS" FIRST in most cases, WHETHER YOU HAD A SCORE CARD WITH YOU OR NOT..
people comp hunted to prove the better COONDOG.
now its to prove the better comp dog & handler.
to me the dog that can tree a hot coon the fastest don't mean a whole lot.especially when they are bred like they are today for comp hunts with automatic striking and other faults as bred in traits.
titled or not, you show me the dog that can tree any coon it gets after, anytime of the yr, and thats the one i title with the name of COONDOG - AND THATS THE ONE I WILL BREED OR HAVE A PUP FROM..
most any dog that can tree a coon and even some that can't, if taken to enough hunts on the right night with the right handler will eventually get a title. there are alot more ways for a dog to end up the high scoring dog then it being the best one on the cast.
to me having the coon is the name of the game.

I COMP HUNTED AND PLEASURE HUNTED THE SAME DOGS. HONEST STRIKE AND HONEST TREE DOGS. I STILL HUNT AND BREED THE SAME BLOODLINE FOR THOSE TRAITS TODAY. I DO IT WITH TRAITS , IF THEY GOT TITLES THATS GREAT ,BUT TITLES HAVE NO PLACE WHATS SO EVER IN THE BREEDING PEN.
TITLES ARE NOT TRAITS.

But wouldn't you agree certain traits are geared specifically for competition hunting? Much more than other traits ?

comp. breeders

have bred the "good"{nose and brains}traits out.that has what gave the walkers a bad name.

comp. dogs and coondogs are totally different today.
i'm lucky to have the dog i got.after buying, turning around and selling probably 6 titled or direct off big well known dogs..i learned titles don't mean its a coondog.i was embarrassed to own them, all of them.

i just laugh when i see guys on here blowing about how nice there grnitech is throwing....if 50% accurate is nice.lol

coondogs period.....

in 1977-78 when we had the great blizzard i hunted dogs that would tree a coon in the snow and cold. in the early to mid eighties my buddy and i had two females. they both were born in 1982, when they were six months old we were singling them out and hunting them alone. we hunted those females until we buried them. they would tree coon in the worse thunder and lightening storms, the deepest swamps, in snow so deep that you could barely walk thru, in any conditions they would tree coons. they were strike dogs that could run and drift a track and the most pull proof pressure treedogs i have ever hunted with. one was gr.nt. mullin's black river squaw (hickory hill jack x roland's buckeye kitty) kitty was a double bred hickory nut harry x morgans penny bred. lady was off of a male out of finley river dan x lonepine jill. squaw and lady was naturals from four months old.how many dogs now days could you take coonhunting by themselves at six months old and tree coon after coon ? they was competition dogs and pleasure dogs, they was'nt no babbling slick treeing idiots. back in the day there was more balanced coondogs and everyone would hunt them in the hunts.

COON DOGS !!!

i have hunted and hunt with big named dogs that won prohunts, in final fours in the pkc world hunts, in final fours of senior dog truck hunts that were gold and platium champions and i seen them up here in the snow and cold that could'nt tree a coon here. i unsnapped one of those great champions three times in about three inches of snow and 28 degrees and he struck three different tracks in three different cut cornfields and after about i would say 7 or 8 minutes, he came back to me. well by 10:00 pm that night the original handler was headed back to tennessee aggravated. those southern great competition dogs can't hack these winter nights in central ohio.
