just

rattlin' your cage, Lucking.

Tim- I missed John's post, would have like to seen it. Sage is down at Leeman Moyers getting hunted in the mountains for awhile. She'll be at Southern Nationals this month.

Pete's 8.

Old Timer- the cotton candy is 10 years old. Left over bear bait from the CHippewa County Fair, 1993. He got into it over the weekend. First time he didn't rattle out of the gates, might have to save some and have another go at the AKC World Hunt. lol

Coondawg- if you ever get serious about wanting a good redbone give me a call. I don't know about GA, but there's plenty up here in WI to go around. Oh yeah, and one more thing, don't forget your checkbook when you're ready to come up.

Redbone breed over all need more drive and volume!Consistency is another thing they lack. When a dog is entered into competition, there is alot of variables: such as types of dogs, hunters, terrain, coon population, guides and judges!Very few Redbones score 500 t0 800 plus points night in and night out!

the only problem in the red breed is the handlers that set on here and bad mouth the breed

if you wont to see some red dogs that have drive and will power to get by ther self try one of these

Joe pup Larry Walker owns
pepper dogs Brent Peel own
Rebel dog Larry Walker sold
Missy the female i sold

not saying that is all that is out there that just some that ive hunted with and would not be scared to hunt them agaist and breed

there is alot more like these that ive listed

the biggest problem with the red breed most wont breed to something outside of there line of dogs ..............jmo

Breeding outside their lines

I would have to disagree there. In the last few years, I have seen more breeders using other reputable lines to incorporate with theirs. I think there is some exciting times just on the horizon.

Redbones

2 of the best coondogs I have ever hunted with of any breed were redbones an old timer owned in northcentral Pennsylvania. Some of the toughest terrain u can find and those 2 dogs were simply amazing. Lloyd Bowes owned them but he was strictly a hide hunter this was in mid and late 80's. I don't believe he even knew there were competitions but those dogs could hold their heads high in any company.

Redbone

One of the best hounds we've had was a Redbone. Jenny died early (age 6 of cancer), about 6 years ago. Her breeding included such lines as Hennings, Dawn's Timber Jack and Bellowwoods. Typically a first strike dog, excellent track and tree dog. Cold nosed but could finish tracks that she started. Hunted wide, deep and fast. Extremely accurate on the tree. Very competitive hound, that took to water almost like a bird dog and loved to compete against other hounds. She was a large female #60 pounds; with just an exceptional confirmation. We were never able to get pups off of her. Two crosses but never any pups. She died in her prime. A huge disappointment to lose such an exceptional hound. The Walkers we have are good hounds but the only hound that we've found that is comparable to this Redbone is our Jonet Plott. This Jonet Plott reminds us of the Redbone in drive, nose, and etc.

they lack the competitive spirit
the desire to get a coon treed ahead of other dogs faster and quicker
its like comparing a mule to a race horse
one is slow and steady and the other is wild and crazy

Redbones

People have had different experiences with Redbones, like other breeds of hounds. What may seperate one dog within a breed of dog from another is likely the bloodlines, early and continiuous exsposure to the outdoors and training once they are old enough to handle game. We always begin exposing our pups to the woods/timber as early as 8 or 9 weeks of age, depending upon the weather. We do this almost daily, which may help to not only cultivate their interests through their senses, but also capitialize on their genetic instincts and foster brain development. This early nurturing of pups maybe one of the most beneficial things that we do to help bring out the potential in our dogs.

The interesting thing about the best hound Redbone (Jenny) was that as early as 5 months she would go out hunting and strike on her own. This tells me that her genes were very potent. Her mother was an exceptional, go-getter track dog and likely passed it onto Jenny. Those old Hennings, Dawn's Timber Jack and Bellowwoods lines maybe important to bring back into the breed if one can possibly find them.

I'm glad you had one great dog in y2kd,but over all if you think the Redbone breed don't need anything your eyes must be closed, ears plugged and you own the best Redbones!

NO IM AWAKE, THE BREED IS FINE THEY JUST DONT HAVE THE NUMBERS AND DONT GET PROMOTED LIKE SOME OF THE OTHERS. THIS HORSE HAS BEEN BEAT TO DEATH BUT THEY ARE ALL JUST HOUNDS. IF YOU HAVE TEN WHITE HORSES AND ONE BLACK THEN IM BETTIN ON A WHITE ONE, DOES THAT MEAN THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE BLACK ONE-NO. EVERY INDIVIDUAL SHOULD CONTINUE TO TRY TO IMPROVE HIS LINE OF HOUNDS BUT THAT IS IN ALL BREEDS NOT JUST RED.

Maybe be there is a reason Redbones don't have numbers and or promoted!I'm not trying to beat the dead horse and everybody has an opinion!Just try this once:go to the Redbone breed days and all the other breed days, enter your dog or just walk along and keep count of Redbones you hunt with and how many just make you drop your jaw!Believe me it's not because I think i'm hunting the best Redbones out there!I will tell you what kind of dog I'm hunting, wheather it's a good one or a piece of crap!Have you ever had to go a day or two ahead of time so the dog can settle in because in don't like to ride?Or hope you draw all females or all males!Type of woods you are going to be hunting,is it a ditch or big timber?Like other people if you think our breed is just fine, you need to take a honest evaluation!I've hunted all types of dogs.Ones that to me during the week wasn't worth a nickle but come Fri. and Sat. night it was hard to beat them! Then you take a dog all week buy itself looks great, put it with three other dogs in a hunt and will not do anything under the sun!I've had dogs in hunts that I new the only way I was gonna win,was if Hell froze over!I've had dogs in hunts that was good enough to win anywhere and against any dog,but these dogs are very rare!

missing

What we are missing is the numbers that are totally dedicated to training, In my opinion a dog needs to be hunted every night by itself for at least a year, then when you go to a hunt you know exactly what to expect and you will know your dog better than you know yourself.JMO
