Hunt

That is one great story Mr. Jack. You got your moneys worth on that hunt. I can see the bite on Gin II hope she gets healed up and back at it. We have a mess here for hunting as we had quite a bit of snow and cold. Then we got rain and temps around freezing which put a layer of ice on everything so you have a hard time getting around. It is supposed to cool down again at the end of the week so if the snow stays away we may get out some.
Take Care,
Scott

Mr. Jack

That sounds like a heck of a race. We have a few old hard runners like that up here this time of year. All the 'young/dumb' ones have been treed & it's time for some long tracks with the coon in rut. We're have a great Jan. thaw to do some hunting & treeing lots of dens, but some on the outside.

Was wondering how close the bad weather last night was to you & Steve? Looked like a real mess where the tornadoes hit. Hope all is well with both you guys with all the storms down that way. Take care, Ron.

A good race

Steve, I thought about you several times during the race above. I know you would have liked to have been there and had ole Bo and Smilling Bob on that race. I knew what Smoke could do, but I was real proud of little Gin, I had never had her on a race anywhere close to this. She layed right in there and got some of the pick ups when they would make a loose. When I got to them after they caught the coon, she had more blood on her than the coon did, of coarse she had been snake bit too, Hope that back is better soon and your back at it every night.

Scott, I got my money's worth out of that one for sure. Gin is doing good, about all the swelling is gone now and I will probably have her back out again tonight. I hope the cold weather gives you a break and you can get back out again. Give ole Tramp a pat on the head for me.

Ron, that was a good race. We get after one like that every once in a while. We did have some bad weather here the other night after I came in from hunting. It was about 2 oclock and I had just layed down and I heard it coming and it was thundering and the lightening had it so light outside that it looked like some one had turned some bright lights on and it started hailing so hard and beating the top and sides of the house. I just knew it was going tobreak the windows out. It got rough and scarry there for a while. The river is still rising, if it keeps rising it will shut most of my hunting down for awhile. I think the tornado must have come over my house. it tore some limbs off trees and completely twisted a cedar tree into at my next door neighbors house. It really did a lot of damage over at Hattisburg, which is about 40 miles from my house. Hope the cold weather is letting you hunt some. Take care, Jack

Man what a race Mr. Jack. I would have loved to heard that one. I know they are hard to enjoy when you're not sure what the running, but after you saw it was a coon I know you enjoyed that one.

Gin 11

The swelling where Gin got snake bit the other night had gone down so I decided to take her out for a run tonight. I took her across the road from my house first. I have a feeder over there and she struck a cold track off it and worked it on in 250 yrds . I went around and come in on another roadand when I stopped to listen she was treed. I went on in and got closer. she was still treeing but I could tell she was getting down and moving around. Before I got to her she was down and moving, but was not opening. I made her come back and leashed her and moved on doen to the river. The river is still rising and getting out of the banks. She struck a good track off of a feeder in there and moved it thru a lot of water about knee deep that's flowing into the sloughs in the swamp. She moved it on in about 100 yrds and locked up treed. I waded in to her and she was treed up a hugh Oak den tree. I have treed several coons in this tree over the years. Gin's mom and dad have treed coons in this tree along with several others, but I can't ever remember seeing one in this tree. My neighbor that owns the swamp down there where I was hunting had come down there tonight and waded in there with me. I was picking at him and asked him if we could cut that tree down. He said he didn't mind if we cut it, but if we did we would have to cut it up and haul it out for fire wood. Now that would be a lot of fire wood in that tree, but I was only picking, I wouldn't cut it for nothing, Coons have to have a home too. We leashed up Gin and went back to the 4-wheelers and called it a night.

Dennis, Smoke does have Cheif's Joe and Ruby on the bottom side of his pedigree.

Mr. Tommy that was a good race, I wish you could have been there. If you had been there and we would have had ole Blueduck in the race I never would have doubted that it was a coon. One day when all this water goes down we'll get togeather and have us a good hunt. Mr. Tommy I know you and most all the other bluetick hunters and I have heard it all thru the years(can those blueticks run with the other breeds)I am always quick to tell them that if my hounds couldn't run with the other breeds, I would have one of the other breeds on my leash. Take care.

Congratulations Jeremy and Shadow

Jeremy loaded up Shadow tonight and traveled over to Meadville, Ms. to their U.K.C. Regional Qualifying Event. Shadow won his cast and 3rd place in the hunt. Jeremy said Shadow stuck a stick thru his front foot up into his leg on the first race and tree and was carrying that foot the rest of the night. You guys with those good blue females don't over look Shadow he is a top hound.

Thank you Steeb, glad you injoy the posts

Kelly sent me a nice video on his Music female (Banjo x Hammerhead) the other night. Now Kelly has the two best looking Blueticks in Virginia haha. I kept a nice male out of this cross that will be monkey faced like his momma and has a super mouth on him. I call him Sledge and am looking forward to getting him going. He just turned 6 months old.
Mr. Jack I sure like the looks of your Gin II pup on the tree. It was just a year ago you were bottle feeding her. I think she knows what she was born to be.

Take Care,
Scott

Sheba 11 and Gin 11

I took these 2 out for a run tonight. Sheba had been in season and it had been about a month since she had been out. Turned them off an ole woods road into an Oak and Cypress swamp. They went in about 100 yrds and struck a hot track, moved it about 100 yrds and locked up treed. I walked in to them and they were treedup a medium sized oak. I spotted the coon as I was walking into the tree. I went on in and took a couple of pictures and walked back out and looked and there were two coons up there lying next to each other. I knocked one of them out and thankfully it was the boar coon as I'm sure the other one was a sow coon. We walked back to the 4-wheeler and moved on down the swamp and turned them loose again and they went in about 300 yrds and struck a moving it and made a circle and came back out across the road that I was on about 200 yrds farther down. They went on through some 20 year old planted pines that had been thinned this past year on through crossed another woods road and crossed Cyprus Creek and on thru and crossed another woods road and on into some rough country and were beginning to break down, they were only barking on it every now and then still moving, but making a spider web on the Garmin. There was another road about 500 yrds in and they were heading toward it. I went around on it and they were within about 125 yrds and Sheba locked up treed. Gin never treed she kept working farther. I walked in to Sheba and she was treed up a small oak and it was slick. I leashed her up and walked back to the 4-wheeler. Gin trailed on in another 200 yrds and finally lost it and came back. I loaded her up and we called it a night.

Scott, good to hear from you. Looks like you have several young dogs around the country that we will be hearing about soon. I'm glad everything is going good for you as a coonhunter and a breeder, couldn't have happened to a greater guy nor group of dogs, I'm proud for you, Keep up the good work.

Gin 11 and Sheba 11

Great pictures Mr. Jack! They look great stretched out on that tree with the Coon. Congrats to Shadow and Jeremy on getting the cast win and qualifying for the Zones. He needs to push himself sand that fine hound and see how far they can go this year. I have heard from more than one person how nice a hound he is. Talk to you soon.

Gin 11 is making it

Loaded up Smoke and Gin tonight and traveled down the river a ways and turned them off an ole woods road. I had noticed driving in that some of the woods had been burned off today and there was still a few small fires in the area. All the sloughs and hardwoods that I hunt here is surrounded by planted pines and I think every year they burn the grass and under growth in the pines. I guess the smoke and all had kept the coon out of the area, because Smoke and Gin went a mile thru those sloughs and turned up river. I went around and caught them close to the river and never got a bark. I decided to call it a night, but instead when I got back to the house I put Smoke up and decided to hit a couple of feeders with Gin. I went over in front of my house and turned her loose. She went in to the feeder and didn't strike so she went on in another 100 yrds or so and came back. We loaded up and headed to the river. I turned her in on a feeder not far off the river on an ole slough. She didn't strike on the feeder so she decided to go hunt one. She struck a cold track 350 yrds in and started working it. I listened and watched her on the Garmin as she kept it moving and getting deeper. she got around 600 yrds and I decided I had better catch up. When I stopped to listen againshe was still 300 yrds from me and still moving and she was moving into some rough country. I knew that to get closer I would have to cross the woods to another slough and up into a field of 15 year old planted pines so I did this and almost went out of hearing of her. when I got as close as I could get She was 700 yrds in. I knew she was in the middle of the bad stuff or had already crossed it. I was trying to decide which way to go to get closer to her for I knew I could not cross what she was in because it is nothing but a bog, with hedges mud and water and a few Cyprus every now and then. about that time she locked up treed and from where I was at I just could hear her. I knew that if she was on the other side It would take me from 30 to 45 minutes to get to her because I was going to have to go all the way back to the river and around and back to the highway and come back toward my house and hit another road and go back in to her. and if she hadn't made it all the way across it would take longer so I headed back out. When I came around on the highway I got to about where I thought I would be even with her and should be able to hear her good. I stopped to listen and she was still a long way from me and I still just could hear her and she has got a mouth on her you can hear a long ways. I thought she would be up close to a cow pasture where Tramp 11 and Gin's mother treed one night, but she was a lot deeper in. I went in on another road and went around the cow pasture and on thru another scope of woods and down an ole woods road. The Garmin said I was going the right way and getting closer. When I stopped again I was about 50 yrds from her. near the bottom of a steep bluff. She acted like she was glad to see me and kept looking at me as if to say(look what I did). I petted her up good and took a couple of pictures and started looking for the coon. I didn't see him at first. I squalled and still nothing. I kept moving around the tree and finally I thought I could see something in a hollowed fork about 3/4 of the way up and when I put the scope on it I could see it was the coon. I shot it out and it was a big coon and I was sure it was an ole rutting boar, but it wasn't it was a sow coon. I sure hate to shoot a sow coon, but after the job Gin did it would have had to come out anyway. We got the coon and walked back to the 4-wheeler and headed home. After I put Gin up and fed her I still had the coon on the 4-wheeler. I have got another pup over in a six acre pen I decided to take the coon over there and make a drag and see what she would do. I tied the pup to a tree and got the coon and tied a rope on it and drug it down thru the woods about 75 yrds and rubbed it on the tree a little and pulled it up out of sight and went back and turned the pup loose and away she went. She followed that track in there and smelled around that tree a little and sat down treed like she was going to stay there for a while. I petted her up and let the coon drop out to her. I want fool with her with a coon anymore. She will be ready to start as soon as I get Gin where I want her. We called it a night.

Scott, you would have been proud of her tonight.

Steve, thanks for the compliments on the dogs. Shadow is a nice hound and I think Jeremy is going to give him a run at the world hunt this year.

Gin 11

Tonight I loaded up Sheba 11 and Gin 11 and headed down river. Turned them off an ole woods road. They made about a 200 yrd circle and came back by and we loaded them up and went on down the swamp. They struck a good track at 300 yrds they crossed the road that I was on about 200 yrds down and went into the 20 year old planted pines. They went thru the pines for about 500 yrds and made a circle in them and then crossed another woods road and crossed Cypruss creek and on across another woods road and into some more pines. I don't know exactly whats kind of terrain they were in. I have never walked in there. I do know there is a lot of water and sloughs in there. I lost contact with Gin at 950 yrds and Sheba at 1245 yrds on the Garmin, but I could still hear them. They made a circle and came back to about 500 yrds and went back almost out of hearing again and made another circle and was coming back again, but they had made some looses and the track was not as good as it was earlier and they finally just lost it and I called them in, loaded them up and came home, put Sheba up, loaded Gin on the 4-wheeler and headed to the river. Turned her in on a feeder, but she didn't strike on the feeder and kept going. She struck in a cold track at 275 yrdsand started working it back down the swamp toward the river. She worked it another 150 yrds and locked up treed. I got the rifle and went to her. She was treed in a large oak with big limbs and a lot of vines. I squalled and shook vines, but he wasn't looking. I shined for a while and didn't see anything. The moon was bright so I turned my light out and started looking for him by the moonlight. I walked around on the other side of the tree so the tree would be between me and the moon and when I got to a certain spot there he was and when I put the scope on him it lit him up as clear as day. I never would have found him with my light. I would have like to have knocked it out to her. She had done a good job and deserved it, but our coon population is slim so I decided to let this one run again. I walked back in and petted Gin up good and we walked back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.

Steve I sure would like to go with you and I thank you for asking, but I will have to take a rain check this time, maybe we will get to go back next fall. You and Mrs. Beverly be careful and have a good trip. You and Mr. Ed have a lot of fun and I will be looking for a lot of good stories.

Gin II

Mr. Jack,
Hope things are going well. I sure enjoy reading about your hunts. Tramp would sure be proud of his daughter out there getting it done. I never seen a dog that takes as good of a picture as that little female!
Take Care,
Scott
